Analyzing Indian Air Force Capability

what the IAF lacks is modern weaponry , avionics & ECM

it's the missile & Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite that matters not just the air-frame.Something like the ALQ-214 (IDECM) is required for survival from a variety of surface-to-air and air-to-air RF threats. before it's too late

India is developing its own EW suite called the mayavi, supposed to be in LCA.
An advanced electronic warfare suite enhances the Tejas' survivability during deep penetration and combat. The LCA's EW suite is being developed by the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) — which was known as the Advanced Systems Integration and Evaluation Organisation (ASIEO) until June 2001 — with support from the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL).[14] This EW suite, known as "Mayavi" (Sanskrit: "Magician"), includes a radar warning receiver (RWR), self-protection jammer, laser warning system, missile approach warning system, and chaff/flare dispenser

In MKI, we use it from Israel. Even here, the RWR's are indian, known as tarang.

Indian ariforce requiers to replace its Bisons as soon as possible...

In this time the wars will be fought on all grounds and in every air space ... Indian Airforce needs to strenghten its defence.

against whom?? We have more than enough more advanced planes to handle the advanced planes of Pak and China. They are good to go for another decade easily.

Ya, definitely, heard about MRCAs or about increased order of MKIs or starting production of LCA's? they are good even with a 5 year delay in to those acquisitions.

I have never flown a mig-21 or mig-19, but know people who have, and have read the testimony of people who have. According to Chuck Yeager (First person to survive going faster than the speed of sound, test pilot for over 50 years, triple ace.. etc. etc.), flying a mig-21(Along with mig-19 and 15) were some of the most frightening experiences of his life. Now, this was a long time ago, in one of the first of them to hit the export market. But when the mig-21 was born it had boatloads of stability and maintenance issues. The engines had extremely short lifespans, it had a tendency to develop stress fractures, and the handling was far from regular or smooth. Things have changed, and the platform has surely improved, but lots of Indian pilot have fallen victim to the mig-21's reliability issues over the years(can't find the exact number) , and so it makes sense that people want to replace it. The IAF wants to keep them in service for another 10 years however. Time will tell if this is a wise decision.

The problem with MKI is that its in the Air Dominance class when it is in Offensive Bomber role...... It is not an Interceptor for Incoming F-16 and Mirages and J10's from Pakistan.......

Pakistan will have 250-300 JF-17 MICA loaded RC-400 radar + Erieye based Interception Sheet covering the Sky of Pakistan.......... This is called Air Defence ........ from Air ...... Interception

But Indian Airforce lacks that.........

.
Indian air space violated........ During War Scenario...... Dont say you will send MKI as it will most likely be over pakistan on Offensive .. Left with Bisons and MIG-29( Some are with Maritime Strike and Defence role in IAF) .... Not a pretty picture i can paint On if you not understand the issue with Indian Airforce Defence.........

.
IAF will use their Mirage2000 for interception & probably LCA in future

You are going to attack pakistan Air space with MKI only............

You donot understand War Scenarios ......... Every Aircraft has a purpose and is defined for normal War times scenarios....... M2K5 in interception .. I can take that but reduces your AG capabilities......... MIG 27 is outdated and Outlived its life to be a real threat in AG........ Mirages are the ones for Deep Strikes with MKI

.
That is what the MRCA is essentially for. Deep strike role with MKI, while the Mirages and MiG 29's and LCA's are for interception.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI...........
Sukhoi Su-30 MKI (NATO reporting name Flanker-H) is a variant of the Sukhoi Su-30, jointly-developed by Russia's Sukhoi Corporation and India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the Indian Air Force. It is a heavy class, long-range, multi-role, air superiority fighter and strike fighter. The variant also consists of French, Israeli and Indian subsystems. The MKI variant is a much more advanced fighter jet than the basic K and MK variants and is considered a 4.5 generation aircraft. Due to similar features and components, the MKI variant is often considered to be an customized Indian variant of the Sukhoi Su-35. However, the Su-35 does not possess the Su-30MKI's Indian software tactical avionics suite

Improvements

1.Canard Foreplanes: Canards are installed to increase lifting effectiveness and enhance manoeuvrability of the aircraft, They are deflected automatically to ensure controllable flight at high angles-of-attack.

2.Thrust Vectoring Control (TVC): The 2D TVC makes an aircraft highly maneuverable. The aircraft is capable of near-zero airspeed at high angles of attack and dynamic aerobatics in negative speeds up to 200 km/h. Su-30MKI becomes the worlds first TVC equipped operational fighter aircraft. According to Jane's all the World's Aircraft, India has the option to upgrade the engine with AL-31FP, which employs fuel manipulation to provide a 3D TVC, resulting in greater maneuverability.

3.The N011-M Bars is the most powerful Russian radar on any exported fighter aircraft. It should be noted that N011-M Bars is different from the phased array radar. The phased array radar will make its debut by 2010, when the first totally-built Su-30MKI will roll out from HAL Nasik, it will be equipped with new, active phased-array airborne radar called the Irbis (Snow Leopard).

4.A multi-national avionics complex sourced from Russia, France, Israel and India which include Display, Navigation, Targeting and Electronic warfare systems.

5.The Su-30 MKI has a maximum range, with one in-flight refuelling, of 8000 km. The Su-30MK and Su-30MK-1 have a maximum range, with one in-flight refuelling, of 5200 km (35% less than MKI variant).

Aerodynamics

1.Su-30MKI aerodynamic configuration is an unstable longitudinal triplane. The canard increases the aircraft lifting ability and deflects automatically to allow high angle-of-attack (AoA) flights.

2.The integral aerodynamic configuration combined with thrust vectoring results in practically unlimited manoeuvrability and unique taking off and landing characteristics.

Cockpit instrumentation

The displays include an Elbit Su 967 head-up display and seven liquid crystal multifunction displays, six 127 mm x 127 mm and one 152 mm x 152 mm. The HUD was widely misreported to be the VEH 3000 from Thales. Variants of the same HUD have also been chosen for the IAF's MiG-27 and SEPECAT Jaguar upgrades, on grounds of standardisation. Flight information is displayed on four LCD displays which include one for piloting and navigation, a tactical situation indicator, and two for display systems information including operating modes and overall operation status. The rear cockpit is fitted with a larger monochromatic screen display for the air-to-surface missile guidance

Navigation

The aircraft is fitted with a satellite navigation system (A-737 GPS compatible), which permits it to make flights in all weathers; day and night. The navigation complex comprises high accuracy Sagem integrated global positioning system and ring laser gyroscope inertial navigation system.

Communication

The communications equipment comprises secure VHF and HF radio sets, a secured digital telecommunications system, and antenna-feeder assembly. It mounts a noise-proof target data exchange system, which provides for coordination of the actions of several fighter aircraft engaged in a group air combat. An automatic flight control system makes all phases of its flight automatic, including the combat employment of its weapons.

Radar

The forward facing NIIP N011M Bars (Panther) is a powerful integrated passive electronically scanned array radar. The N011M is a digital multi-mode dual frequency band radar.

Radar modes:

1.Air-to-Air : velocity search, range while search, track while scan, target ID, close combat modes.

2.Air-to-Surface : Real beam mapping, DBS mapping, SAR mapping, moving ground target selection, tracking and measuring of ground target coordinates.

3.Anti-shipping : Sea surface search, moving sea targets selection, tracking and measuring of sea target coordinates, sea target ID.

Targeting Pod

1.Israeli LITENING targeting pod will be used to target the laser guided munitions. Litening incorporates in a single pod all the targeting features required by a modern strike fighter.

2.The original pod included a 1st Generation FLIR, a TV camera, a flash-lamp powered laser designator, laser spot tracker for tracking target designated by other aircraft or from the ground, and an electro-optical point and inertial tracker, which enabled continuous engagement of the target even when the target is partly obscured by clouds or countermeasures.

3.The pod integrates the necessary laser rangefinder and designator, required for the delivery of Laser Guided Bombs, cluster and general purpose bombs.

Gentlemen, no kind of offence is intended as I naïve to this technical complexity of Air war, but still your high profile statements are quite spontaneous and contradictory.

First of all tell me, how did you reasoned out the definition of Air Dominance with regards to MKI? In quite simple words MKI is Multirole fighter jet which can be optimized for both Air to Air as well, Air to ground as well as command center for all other second line fighter plane by virtue of its Long range radar.

According to you f-16+J-10+Mirage will be on offensive over Indian territory, but one thing I don’t understand how does this plane would evade vast array of Medium-end Air defense radar in the presence SAMs like series of SA variants and akash. Pls take note that I don’t even hold high profile SAM like S-300PMU, SPYDER SAM System cover prevailing over Indian Territory.

When MKI is on offensive, its most likely targets are some key airbases as well as command and control centers, but it is not that we will be send whole inventory of MKIs on offensive duty. As I mentioned above MKI even act as command center, which will vector all interceptors like MIG-21, Mirage, Mig-29s towards intruders because of its current high power radar configuration. Pls take note over here that I don’t even taken into account MRCA and Phalcons into equation.

Pls elobrate your preposition of How does Mig-27 is outdated and outlived its life to be a real threat in AG ?

it is not only a bomber but also an air-superiority vehicle,

now let me tell you a rule, which you may or may not like, compare present with present and future with future, what is the production capacity of jf-17 for Pakistan? How many years will it take to induct those planes?
Now compare the IAF at THAT time, k cool.

.

Left with Bisons and MIG-29( Some are with Maritime Strike and Defence role in IAF) .... Not a pretty picture i can paint On if you not understand the issue with Indian Airforce Defence.........

Now when MKI is attacking in Pakistan, what would Pakistan fight it with? Do you think, without fielding your latest equipment, you stand a chance?

Also note MKI are attacking doesnt mean ALL the MKIs are attacking, why do you forget that your fighters are fighting in a disadvantageous position with your fighters being in the range of our SAMs, radars and so on, the terrain is a gr8 equalizer. (Please note that this advantage applies to your side also when our MKIs are attacking.)

Edit: Sry for going over the borders of this thread of no comparision with vis-a-vis others, fallen for it I guess.
