An Open Letter to Moderate Muslims

From Dr. Bilal Philips official Facebook page

An interesting discussion with a young ISIS recruit...

He is seventeen years old and eager to go and fight in Syria. When I tried to talk him out of it, he started calling me derogatory names! I said to him: we can call each other names from here till kingdom come. However, let’s discuss this in more civilized manner and put our guns, grenades and weapons on the table for moment. If you like what ...you hear, you follow the truth wherever it is. If you don’t like it, do what you want! The young man surprisingly agreed. I said to him: you claim that you follow the Quran and Sunnah, am I correct? He said yes. Why do you want to go to Syria? He said because this is where the Caliphate, Islamic state, dignity and honor of Muslims is. I said: is Caliphate a legitimate cause for killing Muslims and destroying property? He thought for a while and then answered yes, it is. These people opposing it are most likely apostates and hypocrites and deserve to die. Besides, the Muslims who die among them are collateral damage for a greater cause. I said to him: let us not jump to conclusions and take it step by step. Caliphate is something that is praised in Islam but it was never an objective to live or die for. It is not part of the essentials in Islam. This is why the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam didn’t mention it to be one of the seventy plus branches of Iman. Ibn Taimiyah said: “The Sunnah is to have one Caliph and the rest are his deputies. However, if the Ummah disobeyed and had more than one ruler, each ruler must establish the prescribed punishments, fulfil his duties and give rights to his subjects.” If you look the time of the great scholars of Islam, you will find that they had a separate state in Al Andalus and they had an army and a ruler from the Umayyad Caliphate while the majority had the Abbasid Caliphate! Abu Hanifah, Malik, Ash-Shafi’ee, and Imam Ahmed and many other Imams never said that this is kufr or called for war to regain Caliphate. Great scholars of Islam said that having many separate states is permissible with different rulers such as Al Qurtobi, Ibn Taimiyah, Al Shawkani, Al Shingeeti and many more. My young European friend looked confused. I said to him: besides, the consequences of fighting and killing Muslims are far greater than claiming to unite the Muslims under one Caliph. Look at the amount of killing this so claimed Caliph is infecting in the Muslims while invading their towns and villages and killing anyone who stands in his way. No one had ever dared to do this for Caliphate except the Shi’ah who call for their Imamate.

I agree, Islam and Muslims are simply irrelevant in the bigger picture, if you wan't to address the Muslim problem, then deal with the politics of Middle East. The REAL root cause.

The politics of the Middle East involves many religious, including politicized Judaism and Jewish fanaticism.

Now watch all the pro-Israeli apologists start shouting anti-Semite and start their evasive maneuvers...

How so? Do Christians not believe that Jesus is the son of God and all those who don't believe so are infidels? these sort of teachings are for the individual, if you're a Muslim, you believe what it says, it does not mean we can't be tolerant of other people's beliefs or respect their religion and their practices.

By your logic, many religions that claims to teach many fundamental truths are showing signs of intolerance.
ofcource.. but its limited to abrahamic ones... u dont see buddhists fighting jains on who is more peaceful..

Every religion and religious books are made with right intend and it is written to guide people in the right path...... The problem starts when idiots interpret it using their brain...... That is where everything goes wrong.....

why being so diplomatic?

its an online forum to speak ones mind.

Who or what is a moderate Muslim? If there be any such then there must be some non-moderate Muslim also. Nah, this is not Islam. A Muslim is a Muslim is a Muslim. He submits to the Message of Islam and follows the Holy Quora'n and Sharia. Our ENEMIES have introduced various ideas/ theories to confuse and divide us.

To the point article. There are no moderate Muslims, there are just Radicals who do exactly what Quran says, kill infidels wherever you see them. Then there are those semi-Radicals who just call themselves "moderates" by condemning such actions and saying Quran is being misinterpreted and quoted out of context when actually thats not the case and are quick to label anyone "Islamophobe" who questions them.
Well please than bother to read Quran and Hadees at least 5 times before talking yes that order was given for those people of Makkah who betrayed the contract they were given 4 months either they come back and rectify the situation or they will be eliminated where ever found so they broke the peace contract and got what the deserved this is done to this date you don't tolerate those who first sign peace agreement with you than betray this is what you exactly did with the Taliban @KingMamba

Islam is complete no need to update it
Buddy, furniture from IKEA have clearer instructions than the Quran. Or the Bible, for that matter. You guys really do not see that by trying to remove the Quran, and Islam by extension, from the many intepretations of Islam secures the belief that Islam is confusing, even to its own believers.

There is nothing called moderate muslims. We dont find muslims crying for ISIS as much as they do against Israel.

Where are the threads against ISIS? There were floods of abuses for Israel though.

If western media or any media for that matter, does its job properly and report every story without bias, instead of news which are mostly anti Muslim, or pro Israeli, maybe then Muslims will not be biased and start condemning every wrong group whether its ISIS or Israel equally. Media is already doing its job in condemning ISIS but not much of Israel, so naturally more people will try to point out what media is not focusing on.

Zarvan is right. Quran is explicit and clear in its instructions ,especially where rules for infidels are concerned. The moderates try to infuse humanism and try to portray those laws in 'other' interpretations,

It's really a shame that people discuss the Holy Quran like a normal book, without even reading & understanding it.....

Quran is a book . If it was supernatural ,then why no scientifically documented miracles produced by Quran?

You know well that Judaism and Christianity had their own violence-ridden dark ages; you mention it every chance you get nowadays, and you're right. But how did they get past that?

The author is either misinformed, dishonest, or an intellectual coward.

Christianity and Judaism did not "get past" their violent ideologies; their radicals have simply channeled their hatred to non-believers in the Muslim world. The pro-Israel crowd is just as bloodthirsty and savage as any other; they just hide behind official armies and official uniforms to indulge in their (allegedly) religiously-sanctioned hatred.

I have assembled plenty of IKEA furniture pieces. I have some in my house. They are nice and functional enough. The diagrams shows the screws go here, the pegs go there, etc. Simply put...You cannot insert a round peg in a square hole with IKEA furniture. But with religions, it is often, if not usually, the priests in one era said God meant it this way, in another era, God meant it that way, and we are expected to insert the round peg in the square hole on the pain of death if we fail.

I wonder how good the muslim world would be off, if the west were to retract all of it's aid. military and economic. if you feel you can do better without our help, maybe we should try it.

we in the west sure seem to get blamed for all that goes wrong in the muslim world. and it's hardly justified.
