What's new

An Indian article that says it all.

India will also not sit still.

  • India is an important trade partner for the EU and an emerging global economic power. The country combines a sizable and growing market of more than 1 billion people.
  • The value of EU-India trade grew from €28.6 billion in 2003 to €72.7 billion in 2013.
  • EU investment stock in India grew substantially reaching €41.8 billion in 2012.
  • Trade in commercial services quadrupled in the past decade, increasing from €5.2billion in 2002 to €22.7 billion in 2012.

According to a recent report by global credit rating agency Moody’s, FDI inflows have increased significantly in India in the current fiscal. This, according to Moody’s, is due to India’s current pro-growth policies. Net FDI inflows totalled US$ 14.1 billion in the first five months of 2014-15, representing a 33.5 per cent increase from the same period in 2013-14.

India is currently Dubai's number one trading partner with a trade volume of USD 37 billion in 2013, representing 10 per cent of Dubai's total foreign trade

France announced an investment of 2 billion euros (about $1 billion) in India during our PM's 3 day trip to France.

These are just cursory copy-paste done with the focus on hard fact and not potential. India has diversified investment opportunities from across the world economic center points and now even Israel (Tech in Agriculture / Water Treatment ) instead of focusing on one country to pull it resource.

Recent reforms particularly in Insurance sector will show effect after 2016 . Also after July 2016 GST implementation will streamline tax structure which will attract more FDI. With the land reform also being pushed each steps will aid in increasing our GDP by 1-2% .

While a weak Pakistan is indeed in India's interest , it will be interesting to see how its outreach with Russia and other EU countries will result in investment.

The key is in diversification of risk and thus investment source.

I know this is off-topic but I really wanted some thoughts from your perspective on Afghan Army Chief's visit to Pakistan...does Indians sees this development as a failure of its strategic and political gain they had achieved in Afghanistan?

No, thats called smart foreign policy. Afghanistan cannot ignore Pakistan and rightly so, ignoring India will be on thier own risk.

See, India does the same while dealing with Palestine, UAE, Israel all at the same time.

I guess there is a slight shift in Afghan foreign policy towards India may be due to the fact that after the formation of new Afghan government which is now actively engaging Pakistan to ensure there is a long lasting solution/agreement with the Talibans in the wake of schedule withdrawal of ISAF. You can also see this new change in Afghan government behavior by the acceptance of the offer to train Afghan army cadets by Pakistan...

ohh comon people what has gone wrong with you...I can understand that Pakistani's are excited about Chinese premier visit and $45 billion investment, however let's not make it as if India is doomed now....Let the money come and its benefits get realized...improve your economy and living standards...what is this India butt hurt and blah blah...These are talks....it takes years for things to realize....there have been many projects that could not see the light of the day because of this internal turmoil...so watch out...Indian growth story is back and we are looking forward to it...best wishes for yours!!

In geo-politics there is always a reciprocal relationship...India's best interest is that AF should not become a backyard of Pakistan like it was pre 9/11 days....Pakistan best interest is that India should not use AF as a tool to destabilize Pakistan...Afghanistan best interest is to have friendly relations with both India and Pakistan....so what you are finding on ground is some moves to achieve the above scenario..

Not denying that at all BUT the question is why now? what was the hurdle with Karzai Govt...is that because US is backing out with a vacuum which India is not ready to fill or else?

Well there can be many reasons...however at best they are going to be logical guess...Also there was lot of mistrust between Afghans and Pakistan where both accusing the other for supporting terrorism...May be a late realization that success of both lies in each other success as well...and the mistrust of India and Pakistan hardly needs to be mentioned....no??

India Russia signed 100 billion $ worth of deals when Putin visited last december, India will always maintain a financial edge and much bigger defence budget and a bigger, better equipped military with fancier machines.

anyway, the CPEC is a good plan, hope it helps improving Pakistani's lives and helps stem the jihadi terrorism there.

a peaceful, prosperous Pakistan is good for India.

A good sign indeed for our economy and if everything goes as planned and the projects signed are executed successfully it would be a game change for our economy.

As the article suggests the deals signed are quite important for Pakistan and gives a clear sign that the economy would improve in times to come. CPEC is more important for China than Pakistan, it would save China billions of $$$ and a great deal of time as well and on Pakistan's side it would help in development of infrastructure and bring in some money as well. So CPEC is a win-win for both Pakistan and China.

As far as India is concerned I don't know why the the writer has shown so much insecurity? I think India would not be effected by these deals as it does not concern them.

Oh plz, this 46 billion is not exactly something India cares of ,this investment if ever come big if -No reforms, no Chinese investment - thenews.com.pk

over a decade, doesn't affect India the difference btw our economy is bound to increase according to projections we
will add close to entire Pakistani GDP every year.

Good luck for the Pakistani economy though .

Many don't understand that big as the figure looks (assuming that it materializes over many years), the Indian economy is much bigger. The oil price drop is a bonanza to the GoI. Unlike Pakistan which has passed on pretty much all the gains to the consumer, GoI has raised taxes to help shore up the fiscal position. The revenue to the GoI by just this additional tax alone amounts to about $ 25-30 billion (benefit to total economy - $50-60 billion). In one year...... Good to maintain a perspective.

@Horus @Irfan Baloch @Windjammer @Chinese-Dragon and others......Truth in the end always comes out.:)
Article is really good but what would really give Indians a heart attack is if news is confirmed that Pakistan is in talks for J-10 and that too in large numbers, and also Pakistan along with going for 4 more F-22 we need to go for 8 more major ships from China, for me they can be 4 Type 54 and 4 Type 56. When economy improves than go for 4 to 6 Cruise Missile Destroyers, but 16 Frigates and Corvettes are must as we also need to protect Chinese interests at Gawader, and last but not the least we need to invite China to place its 4 to 6 Ships at Gawader which should include at least 2 Type 55 Destroyers along with two nuclear submarines . @Umair Nawaz

Heart attack :warning2:

I do not think India thinks anything like that. Alhamdulillah Pakistani themselves are more than enough to stop themselves and their country from becoming anything positive.

You read my mind

There is only one way of looking at the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s maiden visit to Pakistan during which the two countries India has fought wars with signed 51 agreements between them. If monetised, it would mean that China would pour a whopping $46 billion into Pakistan once these agreements come to fruition.

This sum would be a good $15 billion more than the United States has pumped into Pakistan since 2002.

It conveys a chilling message to India – that Pakistan is about to become a far more powerful country only because the Chinese munificence. It also means that China is full steam ahead in empowering a nuclear-armed restive neighbour who will inevitably use its to-be-acquired economic and military strength against India.

Considering the fact that the Pakistan-China strategic partnership is coinciding with Pakistan’s fast-increasing strategic ties with Russia, a Pakistan-China-Russia axis is on the anvil. This is bad news for the Indian strategic establishment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping. AFP

This is a reality check for India and Narendra Modi who is planning to embark on his maiden prime ministerial visit to China in less than three weeks.

Much of the Chinese money is for building a modern equivalent of the fabled ancient Chinese Silk Route from central and western Asia through to the Middle East and Europe.

In monetary terms, the $46 billion Chinese funding for an ambitious 3,000-km-long China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which will shorten the route for Chinese energy imports from the Middle East by 12,000 km, is the biggest overseas investment by China announced yet.

The CPEC corridor is expected to be operational within three years. And make no mistake about it that given the proven track record of China, Beijing will leave no stone unturned in completing the project on schedule, if not before time.

The project would link China’s far-western region to Pakistan’s Gwadar port (built with Chinese investment and technical expertise) and would provide 14,000 MW of electricity to the energy-starved Pakistan.

Once completed, the CPEC project would enlarge China’s strategic footprints in the Indian Ocean and would change the regional power matrix forever.

One of the fallouts would be that China would then wield a much more powerful influence in the Indian Ocean even though geographically speaking China is not an Indian Ocean power.

Moreover, once completed, the CPEC project would mean that the Chinese presence in entire Pakistan, including Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, becomes all pervasive and powerful.

This is a nightmarish scenario for the Indian strategic establishment. Needless to say, China’s hectic economic and so-called “commercial” engagement with Pakistan, which is nothing but a strategic gamechanger in the region, would go a long way in making Pakistan a richer and stronger entity than ever before.

This is truly a red rag for India given the fact that a strong and resurgent Pakistan would inevitably needle India all the more.

The doomsday scenario has a flip side too which is aimed at China. The seamless integration of China and Pakistan can bring in a major security headache for China. An adverse fallout of the CPEC project, from the Chinese viewpoint, is that China will be more vulnerable to the mushrooming jihadist elements in Pakistan.

In other words, China’s soft underbelly Xinjiang will inevitably be more prone to Pakistan-based jihadist elements exporting their terror ideology to China.

Thus far the Chinese mega investments across the globe have not had a significant security ramification for Beijing. But the CPEC project may change this situation forever. It is extremely likely that China’s Xinjiang province will be more exposed than ever before to the threat of jihadists based in Pakistan.

The agreements that poured in thick and fast between China and Pakistan during President Xi’s visit to Pakistan may actually become a running sore for China from the security point of view.

While India cannot obviously intervene or influence China-Pakistan bilateral relations, New Delhi will have to think out of the box and come up with pragmatic solutions in the shortest possible time.

India is not alone in this. The United States and its allies also find themselves at the wrong side of the Chinese stick.

China is invariably the elephant in room and epicenter of all discussions whenever two powerful nations engage with each other irrespective of their geographical locations. But after Xi Jinping’s historic visit to Pakistan means that Pakistan will be the proverbial gorilla in the room when PM Modi confabulates with his Chinese interlocutors in Beijing next month.

Therefore, when PM Modi travels to China next month he will have to be mindful of lot of minefields. China and Pakistan have just prepared a new one for PM Modi!

Here's why Indian strategists should worry about China's $46 billion funding to Pakistan - Firstpost

Regarding the bold parts......this says it all India wants PAKISTAN TO BE WEAK AND SCREWED NATION TO BE LAUGHED AND D-GRADED BY THEM. Their big talk of Strong and prosperous Pakistan is vital for Indian rise and security, something that their Mani Shankar Arya n Co (when they used to come here) as well as their gov tells the world is farce and lie.
