Gallup poll finds in run up to President Obama's visit to Middle East, 64% sympathize with Israelis and 12% with Palestinians.

Americans' sympathies for Israel matched an all time high according to a Gallup poll released Friday, just five days before US President Barack Obama was scheduled to visit Israel for the first time as president.

According to the poll, Americans' sympathies lean heavily toward the Israelis over the Palestinians, 64 percent vs. 12%.

While partiality to Israel has topped 60% consistently since 2010, the 64% recorded in Friday's poll matched the previous record seen in 1991, during the first Gulf War. In the 1991 Gallup poll, only 7% of respondents sympathized more with Palestinians than Israelis.

Analysis of the poll data showed that Republicans, conservatives and older Americans were more likely to be partial to Israel.

Republicans (78%) were much more likely to sympathize with Israel than Democrats (55%), according to the poll. Democratic support for Israel has increased by four percent since 2001, while Republican support for the Jewish state has jumped 18 percentage points in the same period.

The percentage of respondents favoring the Palestinians increases with formal education, ranging from 8% of those with no college experience to 20% of postgraduates.

"Palestinians receive the highest sympathy from Democrats, liberals, and postgraduates, but even among these, support tops off at 24%," according to Gallup.

That's strange, since I read somewhere that the majority of Jewish Americans support the Democrats.

Israel's existence relies on American support and sympathy...so good for them...

Actually all major decisions about USA politics are made in israel not America.

The majority of US support comes from Christians, not Jews. And yes, Jews vote much more for Democrats.

So, which is it "Think Tank"? Israel controls the US or the US controls Israel? You can't have both ways, unless you are a schizophrenic.

I 'think' you should be proud as an Israeli that your country pulls all the strings of the world's only super power.....
There is no point for me in posting videos and links as you and others will reject them as 'le conspiracy theory' anyway....so take it as my opinion and move on.

Support for Israel transcends religion, race and political affiliation. One of the greatest friends Israel had in the US senate was an Asian American. He died recently, which saddened many, including me.

He was a Democrat as well.

You're correct, without American aid, there is no such thing as Israel.

Americans’ Sympathy For Israel At 22-year High

Ahead of Obama’s visit, Gallup poll finds 64% of Americans sympathize more with Israel, just 12% with the Palestinians

By Haviv Rettig Gur

March 16, 2013 "Information Clearing House" -"Times Of Israel" - NEW YORK – Americans’ sympathy for Israel is at a 22-year high, according to Gallup figures released on Friday, just five days ahead of Barack Obama’s first visit to Israel as president.

In figures gleaned from the polling organization’s early February World Affairs poll, 64 percent of Americans say their sympathies “in the Middle East situation” – Gallup’s term for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and peace talks – lie more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians. Just 12% favor the Palestinians.

Nearly one-quarter, or 23%, said their sympathies lie with both parties, neither, or had no opinion.

The figures mark a 22-year high in sympathy for Israel. The last Gallup poll that showed 64% sympathy came in 1991, at the height of the First Gulf War and in the midst of the first intifada.

Sympathy for Israel then declined through the 1990’s, though it remained comfortably ahead of sympathy figures for Palestinians. The number who said they favored Israel reached a low point of 38% in 1997, during the first government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the early 2000′s, Americans’ sympathy for Israel saw turbulent spikes and drops as US public opinion responded to successive terror attacks on Israel’s cities and the subsequent Israeli military incursions that drew civilian casualties.

But those public opinion swings resolved by 2005 into a steady, rising trend line showing widespread and growing support for Israel.

The figures are bad news for the Palestinians, as sympathy for their side remained relatively steady — and low — throughout the past three decades, hovering between a high of 20% and a low of 7% since 1988.

Even in periods when many Americans stopped saying they favored Israel in the conflict, most did not switch to the Palestinians, but rather said they favored neither side.

Sympathy for Israel among respondents aged 18-34 is at 55%, compared to 71% among those over 55. But both groups favor the Palestinians in equal measure, at just 12%.

“Younger Americans show less favoritism toward Israel than middle-aged adults and, in particular, seniors; however, they are no more likely to favor the Palestinians,” Gallup notes. Younger Americans “are simply less anchored about whom they favor.”

The poll also found that “Palestinians receive the highest sympathy from Democrats, liberals, and postgraduates, but even among these, support tops off at 24%.”

Self-described “liberals” show the highest level of sympathy toward the Palestinians — 24%, compared to 51% for Israel — while 19% of Democrats are partial toward the Palestinians, and 55% toward Israel. Sympathy for Palestinians is at just 5% among both Republicans and self-described “conservatives.”
