Valdai Discussion Club participants explained how the relations between China, Russia and the United States are shaping the direction of global development.

SOCHI (Sputnik) – Conflicting interests of Russia, China and the United States, the key world powers, create global insecurities, panelists of the Valdai Discussion Club said Tuesday.

"Emerging today is the system where we have three great powers — the United States, China and Russia," John Mearsheimer, political science professor at the University of Chicago said at the Club's session on global governance problems. He said the United States faced two "meaningful challengers," Russia and China, and controversies between them create major global problems and define the direction of global development. "As a result of the US unipolar positions, the United States tries to move NATO further and further eastwards, antagonizing Russia… American elites, both Republican and Democratic, failed to appreciate Russia's security concerns. Americans just refused to understand that," Mearsheimer said. Ukrainian and Syria crises are the best examples of the deterioration of US-Russia relations and the US failure to hear Russia's security concerns. He said Russia had three choices – to ally with the Chinese or with the United States or remain neutral. "Situation now looks like Russia is siding with China. Americans have foolishly driven Russia in the arms of the Chinese," Mearsheimer said.

Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia, agreed that the world was ruled by the three dominant powers, which has recently led to an "explosion of uncertainties."

What complicates international relations today is that the trio does not always observe the rules of global order, as it happened in 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq, he noted. This undermines international governing institutions, including the UN Security Council. "Three major powers need to reflect is order better than disorder," Rudd said. "When you have such an emerging disfunctionality, it leads to the disfunctionality of global institutions – UN Security Council could not do anything on Syria." The Valdai Discussion Club was established by Russia in 2004. It seeks to promote dialogue between Russian and international intellectual elites on global political, economic, and social developments. The 2016 session is hosted by the Russian resort city of Sochi.

I also agree that the world has 3 powers now, Russia's economy is no in a good shape but it has formidable military prowess, Russia is still a undisputable world power that no countries can afford to ignore. UK , Germany and Japan are developed countries but due to the size of their land and population, their overall national strengths are still far behind those 3 world powers.

By that same token China has foolishly driven India towards the US.
We are not in the same league . Only Indians think they are on this planet.

. .
Russian tilt towards China or China's hand for Russian assistance is natural.
Even if there would be no Middle East crises and had the incident of Crimea never happend, still Russian tilt towards China would be greater than USA.

no, I agree with him, India are nowhere even close to being comparable to the US, Russia or China, not militarily, not economically, by no metric can we favorably compare India to those 3.

That depends on your definition of comparable.

China GDP in 2005 = 1.7 Trillion $
China GDP in 2006 = 2.0 Trillion $

India GPD in 2016 = 2.25 Trillion $

A gap of 9 years is not that great, especially since Indian economic growth is increasing while chinese economic growth is decreasing.

Militarily the gap is smaller still due to higher QUALITY of Indian equipment's as compared to Chinese equipment's.

Rest is all classic chinese propaganda designed to keep the illusion among the ignorant.

Russian GDP is actually HALF of that of India, its only 1.2 Trillion $.

I suggest you look beyond the propaganda and stick to RELEVANT Facts and then suddenly the lies will fall away and you can restore your self esteem.

Economically, India is ahead of Russia with Forex Reserves even higher than that of United States. Yes, it falls short USA and China economically. But it won't last long given India's high economic growth and population. Large economy means more defense budget and research budget for development of technologies. India can catch up in "that" league within two decades.

No doubt, if the Americans had played their cards right, the Russians and Chinese who historically have had disputes, would not have become such good friends. The Americans could at worst have ensured that the Russians at least remained neutral with regards to US-China affairs.

Being the sole superpower for about two decades probably got to the heads of US policymakers though, as the fall of the SU was a huge event and the lack of opposition to illegal wars around the world like Iraq probably made them feel they were invincible. Alone China and Russia still don't rank up against the US but together they are a potent force.

No wonder the US is desperately trying to make new allies in Asia like Vietnam and India, to counter balance the Russians and Chinese.

You should travel to China to see for yourself, and I do not like saying this but, we're not going to get there in 9 years.

The US and Russia can talk about a qualitative advantage in their military hardware, India ? not so much.

Russian GPD is half and their population is what, 1/10th of India's ?

You only need to travel a bit and see for yourself.

Russia and Chinese alliance is unnatural. Once the western sanctions are lifted, the rapprochement between west and Russia will be inevitable.
