What's new

American pays $100,000 to trophy hunt Pakistan's endangered national animal

. . . . . . .
why sad ? these 100000$ will help to protect and manage dozens of markhors . it was before when every tom herry dick hunt them for free and they were decreased . now you have to pay a huge amount to kill a single markhor .this money goes to organization which protect markhors

Pakistani people are more uneducated about regulated hunting. This is exploited by bharti and western media groups.

. . .
Here we go again....

@krash , time for your relevant post again. :D?

Haha! As always,

"Despite not being a fan of killing animals for sport, I'm actually a pretty big admirer of this program but not merely because of the licensing fees paid to the locals. The foreigners were never the ones who hunted these animals close to extinction, it was the local poachers. Now those very locals receive a season's worth of income from a single one of these licensed hunts. These licensed hunters also hire jeeps, guides, porters, lodging and buy supplies from these locals which brings further direct income to the whole community. The locals later realised that if the animals' populations were not kept at healthy levels the government would stop issuing these licenses which would stop this vital source of income for them. And the poaching suddenly stopped. The program turned those former poachers into today's conservationists which has resulted in an unprecedented increase in these animals' numbers. The locals are the ones who make sure the right animals are hunted and that illegal poaching does not happen. This has been the real benefit of this program. Ironically, no one had a clue of this happening when the program was first devised, it was only realised later. It has been so successful that since then countries all over the world have emulated it for their own endangered species.

This program was originally devised by a conservationist working in the Chiltan National Park in Balochistan. He had tried every thing but he could not stop the nomadic tribes crossing through the region from poaching the Markhor for meat and pelts. They had been doing it for hundreds of years, they didn't care what anyone said. Later, when the conservation efforts were hit with budget cuts he came up with this program; part of the licensing fees were to be paid towards the conservation efforts while the rest were to be paid to the locals as royalty. It was only a few years later when he realised the true genius of the program he had devised."

@WebMaster Can we create a stick thread for this topic?

I'm thinking about creating a thread detailing exactly how important this trophy hunting is.

.
80% of this amount goes to community development and MArkhor preservation
That's why their population have increased in both KPK and Balochistan

And only Old Markhor are picked for hunt

.
Well if Wild life is at extremely dangerously low level like 5,000, 6000 animals left at National level that is a massive loss

Consider how China values their Panda a national animal
Consider how Australia have a unique animal , Kangaroo and many more
Arabians value their Arabian Horses in desert

Similarly Pakistan has Markhor and Snow Lepord
Both animals are dying fast

Hunting , takes away food source for Snow lepord so indirectly both species are dying

If the population size of Markhor was 50,000 Animals , then yes some limited 500 licences for hunting would have been ok

Nationally the Goal should be increase the size of Animal Population to 50,000-100,000 Animals , and then look for how many licences can be issued for hunting may be 500 Licences or 1,000 licences only when population is at high level

I appreciate your concern and energy but do you know:
  1. Markhoors are not dying fast, in fact, Markoor population have increased rapidly and they have been downgraded from endangered species to NEAR threatened ever since the controlled/licensed trophy hunting initiative.
  2. WWF have appreciated the government and local communicate efforts and program that have helped bring the population of the animal up.
  3. Only THREE licensees were issued for 2018/19 season so i don't see how it threatens snow leopard of starvation.
  4. Its the money from this controlled hunting that is helping the whole project of conservation.
So dear, again, i appreciate your energy and concern but you need to study the topic a bit more before commenting.

THREE licenses were issued

Makes me realise my own bias that I thought in horror that they were being permitted to hunt snow leopards then gave a sigh and thought oh its only a goat, still sad that people think killing an animal is "fun"

Thank you Asalan for you balanced and informative post.
