In comment section many viewers thanked this American girl for showing the real rural life of " oppressed" Tibet and "persecuted" Tibetans, who, according to the western media, are alledgedly banned practicing their religion by the Chinese government.

I have been to Lhasa twice.
Once in 1986 crossing over from Nepal and Friendship Bridge and Shigatse to Lhasa when a room in Lhasa Snowland cost me 1.5 RMB in FEC currency

And another time 10 years later or so when I made my way from Dali even though I was told no roads to Lhasa.

That was in the period where the snows melted enough to allow travelling over the passes and before the rains came in to stop all possible travelling.

After waiting In Old Dali for 2 weeks for snow to melt, went on tracks and road via bull drawn carts and tractor drawn carts from little towns and villages until I reached Lhasa for 2nd time taking 3 weeks. Views of snow covered mountains along the way gorgeous. I peed on crown of road, knowing one side flow to Yang Sikiang, and other side to Mekong river. Then reached a point where I jumped from one side of stream to other side, knowing I jumped over Mekong river


In both those extended visits, Tibetans were all very religious and worship freely.

Local Tibetans were very friendly and welcoming to me and my travelling companions.

Except hotel prices ten years later soared 10 fold costing me 20++ RMBs.

Both times I went as independent traveller. I could go to many places. At times being a low profile as a Chinese as I am ethnic Chinese. And at times , being a English speaking foreigner where Chinese officials seemed hapless against as I pretended not to know a word of Chinese.

I shudder to think how much hotel in Lhasa will cost me now .
