Bangladesh Police Arrest Acting Editor of Pro-Opposition Paper

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh — The police in Bangladesh arrested the acting editor of a pro-opposition newspaper on Thursday amid strikes by opposition forces that have frozen travel in much of the country and that are crippling its economy.

The editor, Mahmudur Rahman, who works at the Bengali-language newspaper Amar Desh, was arrested in a raid on his office in Dhaka, the capital, and charged with sedition, among other crimes.

Bangladesh has become increasingly paralyzed by demonstrations, counterdemonstrations and strikes that often turn violent and nearly always disrupt already difficult travel conditions. In recent days, strikes have been called by pro-Islamic groups allied with the opposition parties. The groups have issued a list of 13 demands, including the death penalty for those who defame the Prophet Muhammad, a demand directed at bloggers critical of some opposition leaders. Four bloggers were jailed Wednesday on charges of insulting religious beliefs.

The bloggers have in turn demanded death sentences for those now being tried for crimes committed during Bangladesh’s war for independence more than 40 years ago.

On Wednesday, a trade organization for the country’s economically vital garment industry called for an end to the recent strikes, saying they are preventing international buyers from visiting factories during the crucial spring-summer buying season. Meanwhile, more than 1.4 million tons of goods were stuck in ports across the country because they could not be unloaded, according to local news media reports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dipu Moni gave a briefing for foreign envoys on Wednesday evening signaling that the government might take legal action against opposition forces. But Ms. Moni pleaded for understanding from foreign governments, according to news media reports.

Opposition forces are considering calling more strikes for next week, the reports said.

Mahmudur Rahman has been charged with offending religious sentiments by distorted use of pictures of the Kabaa Sharif Ghalib and its Grand Mufti in news reports carried by his ‘Amar Desh’ daily.

A fresh case to this effect has been filed against Rahman, a day after his arrest, in the Tejgaon Police Station on Friday.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com that this case has been instituted against Mahmudur Rahman under the Section 57 of Information & Communications Technology Act, 2006.

On Dec 6 last year, pro-BNP 'Amar Desh' and pro-Jamaat-e-Islami 'Dainik Sangram' published a news report about Imams forming a ‘human chain’ at Kaba Sharif (Saudi Arabia) to protest the persecution of Alems (Islamic scholars) in Bangladesh.

The report turned out to be baseless.

Faced with massive protests over the online social networks, both newspapers retracted the news reports from their online version. Dainik Sangram issued a public apology for publishing the report.

Mahmudur Rahman was arrested from Amar Desh office on Thursday morning on charges of sedition and for unlawfully publishing an alleged Skype conversation of a former Chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal.

A Dhaka court has also granted police 13 days’ remand to question the Acting Editor of pro-BNP daily Amar Desh in three cases.

Tasnim Alam, central publicity secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was arrested by Rapid Action Batalion (RAB) from his Uttara residence in the capital early Monday. Jamaat`s executive committee member Mojibur Rahman confirmed it to risingbd24.com.

He said, "We don`t know why he (Tasnim Alam) has been detained. His family informed us about his arrest."

However, there are 8/10 cases filed against Tasnim Alam during the tenure of the present government. Sources said Tasnim Alam used to give many policy-level decisions to the party`s leaders. Besides, he has shares in the Daily Amar Desh.

New investors led by former energy adviser Mahmudur Rahman took over Bangla daily Amar Desh yesterday.

The new shareholders also had a meeting at the office of the paper. Mahmudur Rahman was made chairman of Amar Desh Publication Ltd and a new board of directors was formed during the meeting.

Amar Desh now has 20 shareholders. Of them, Islami Bank Director Tasnim Alam, Shakil Ahmed of advertisement firm Protisabdo, owner of Max International Golam Mohammad Alamgir and agriculturalist Anwarunnabi Majumder Babla are the new directors.

The outgoing managing director and publisher of the paper Hasmat Ali and director Enayetur Rahman Bappi, who is also managing director of ntv, welcomed the new directors.

Adviser and acting editor Ataus Samad, news editor, chief reporter, reporters and employees of the daily also welcomed the directors and assured them of extending all out cooperation in running the paper.

Amar Desh insiders say that the paper has been incurring losses since its inception on September 23, 2004 under the leadership of former BNP lawmaker Mosaddek Ali Falu, now in jail on corruption charges. Fugitive Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim was a major shareholder. Enayetur Rahman Bappi was also a founding partner of the paper.

The new directors have taken all liabilities of Amar Desh in exchange for all the assets the company owns. Reliable sources said the daily has liabilities of around Tk 40 crore.
