What's new

Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

At this point, cancel this stupid project and launch a next-gen tank project also modernize all current leopards to todays standard with APS.

I understand how you feel. How do you start on a new tank for the future if you can't make an engine or transmission of the past.

Launching a next gen tank project gives you time for the bmc, tumosan or any other company for a new engine tender and development. Next gen tanks could have enclosed mortar, aps or missile launch system, top down aps protection, autoloader, unmanned operation capabilities, high mobility capability, better firing range, stealth capability, better crew protection designs.. so many characteristics missing on the Altay tank..

By the time we have the numbers, it's already an old design..

They should make some improvements. Yes i agree.

A good 2 Ideas about how we use our old M-48/60's;

You never heard about T1, T2, T3 production lot plans?

Yes but they dont offer top down aps protection, better firing range, stealth, better crew protection, high mobility, autoloader, unmanned capabilities, enclosed weapon launchers. Except for T3 offering autoloader and unmanned turret.

you sure sound like some child wanting every whiz bang feature possible in a video game.

There are things like budget, time, rnd, timetables, priorities....

Does anyone believe we are really working on a transmission or just waiting on Korea. I would like for us to start making a transmission with the know how we have and doing reverse engineering. There are no SECRETS about gearboxes for tanks. It's nothing like making single crystal turbine blades. We need someone in the government to make an order for a prototype to test. Waiting for some other country is silly.

Advance digital transmission gearbox can be as tricky as modern turbofan. There is reason why only a few players on market.

For obvious reasons Federal Republic of Germany is not willing to supply neither MTU engines nor ZF transmissions. Even if they give for 250 tanks it will allways be with restrictions for exports and for our own use.

Experiences of South Koreans showed that it is very difficult to produce reliable engines and transmissions comperable to German ones. Even with the Korean expertise which is much higher than ours.

Therefore we have to be open to alternative powerpacks.

Why don't we opt for hybrid powerpacks?

Turkey is indegenously able to produce reliable diesel engines which can be used for generators in order to recharge batteries. Suitable Electric Motors are also possible to be produced locally and by use of those we can eliminate the use of complex transmissions.

It is wiser to invest in new technologies than trying to reach the level of countries with over 120 years of experience.

Hybrid technology for ALTAY or other vehicles will also have following advantages:

1-Using electrical movement will provide following tactical advantages.
a)Quiter operation compared to other means of power.
b)Less heat footprint. Therefore increased stealthiness against infrared sensors including those of missile seekers.

2-Less moving parts.
a)Easier to produce.
b)Less parts to malfunction.
c)Higher combat readiness.

3-Maximum local contribution in production:
a) Our limited national resources will remain in the country.
b) Peripherial industries will evolve.
c) Logistics will be better.
d) Inventory management will be easier.
e) Further development and upgrade according to feedbacks will be more doable.
