What's new

Altaf Hussain makes a Uturn in 6 hours.

I think sooner or later this was on cards. I believe MQM should find a leader here in Karachi and start afresh with their original concept of middle class leadership, stop thinking on ethnic basis and am sure their concept can take them to other urban areas as well.

.
i will only believe when MQM decides for a new leader because i dont believe that the authority has been transferred to the rabita committee of karachi(may well be London)

drama lag raha he bhai mughe to yeh

You have a point ........

He was chosen (forcefully off course) by his party as leader for life. Remember their slogan, "Jo quaid ka ghaddar hai wo maut ka haq dar hai"

If he has actually resigned, that means he is in deep ****, and police has found some non deniable evidences of his involvement either in Imran Farooq's murder or money laundering or some other major crime. Now I really wonder what is the purpose of British PM's sudden visit to Pakistan.

I wasn't aware of this. I had assumed he was only a spiritual leader for the MQM Killers and he didn't hold any positions in the party in the first place, hence he was in UK indefinitely.

Ibad had 36 murder cases on him, which Musharraf took back to make him governer,

New Blood in MQM should rise to the ladder... People like Mustafa Kammal and Governor Ibad are good people .. MQM now have to get into mainstream politics

Some? you are being very humble here, very unlike of a MQM support

some MQM supporters are very narrow minded?

We will never ever accept his resignation & it's out of question

Two wrongs never make it right, so instead of giving similar examples serves no purpose. Altaf ruled MQM as a don, so much so that no one even dared to sit beside him, just a few days back he had his rabta committee beaten up by his goons. Besides the political hierarchy, there is another parallel and more powerful structure which he himself controlled directly and that was the one involved in target killings, money laundering, smuggling, riots, and keeping his own politicians and rabta committee, and sector in-charges in line.

KARACHI: Altaf Hussain, the founder of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, resigned as chief of the party early Sunday morning.

Hussain said that he was voluntarily handing over all authority and responsibilities as party leader to the MQM's Rabita (Coordination) Committee.

Speaking to media via telephone from UK, Hussain said that Scotland Yard police had raided his residence some days ago and had seized some material, following which he decided to voluntarily step down as party leader on moral grounds.

Hussain said he would not seek legal counsel or a solicitor but would plead his case himself if he were to be produced in court in the Imran Farooq murder case. He said that he would accept any decision by the courts.

Dr Imran Farooq was one of the founding members of the MQM, then known as the Mohajir Qaumi Movement. The party later transformed into the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the largest political party in Karachi.

Farooq, who had also been living in exile in London since 1999, was stabbed to death on his way home from work in Green Lane on Sept 16, 2010 outside his residence.

Recently, the London Metropolitan police had stepped up investigation into the murder, and police searched two residential properties in London earlier this month as part of the ongoing probe. It conducted several raids, arrested some eight suspects, questioned several people and scanned through thousands of documents.

Sunday’s announcement came as a shock to party workers and supporters as Altaf Hussain has servedas the chief of the MQM ever since its inception in 1984.

In his telephone conversation with media, Hussain called on his party workers "to stay united, and to continue the struggle that he had once started."

He also urged his party workers to accept all decisions by the MQM's Rabita Committee in the same manner that they acted upon his directions.

Shortly after news of the announcement on TV channels around 5 am, a large number of party workers and supporters were started gathering at the MQM's 'Nine Zero' headquarters in Karachi as well as offices in other parts of the country.

No official statement has yet been issued by the MQM regarding Hussain’s decision to step down as party chief.
