LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Tuesday requested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hand over the administration of Karachi to the Pakistan Army, Express News reported.
Commenting on the ongoing violence in the city, Altaf said the Sindh government has completely failed to protect the residents of Karachi from criminal elements.
He added that the people of Karachi, particularly the traders, are hoping to be rescued by the armed forces as the police and Rangers have failed to do their job.
Violence in Karachi is on the rise again after a brief respite, with 12 people being killed in the city on August 25 including the Ahle Sunnat Waljamaat spokesperson.
A recent fact-finding report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) claimed that the paramilitary force present in the city was an agent of fear, instead of an agent of security.
In its report, the human rights organisation took up 11 recent cases of abduction, extra-judicial killings and torture allegedly by the Rangers and observed that the Rangers had abused their power and not disclosed charges against abducted persons.
