New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram's alleged anti-north and east India remark to the US ambassador exposed by WikiLeaks triggered a sharp attack Friday from opposition MPs, who demanded his ouster.

According to a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks, Chidambaram told US Ambassador Timothy Roemer that India would have registered higher growth rates 'if it were the south and west only', because 'the rest of the country held it back'.

The observations, first published by The Hindu, were made when Roemer made an introductory call on the home minister after arriving in 2009 as successor to ambassador David Mulford.

And predictably, political parties from north India took strong objections to the alleged remark. The Samajwadi Party (SP) said the remark was 'against national unity'.

Members protested in both houses of parliament.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav raised the issue in the Lok Sabha.

He said, 'Chidambaram is in the home ministry and despite that he has made comments against the national unity. More seriously, he said this to a foreign ambassador. This is shameful.'

Chidambaram was not present in the house and other MPs from the Samajwadi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Janata Dal-United and the Rashtriya Janata Dal demanded that the home minister should come to the house and clear his position and apologise.

Some MPs were heard shouting 'Grah mantri ko hata do, hata do' (Remove the home minister).

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar tried to pacify the MPs but they instead walked near her podium and started shouting slogans.

Meira Kumar adjourned the house for about 45 minutes.

Protests revisited when the house re-assembled after the adjournment.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister P.K. Bansal sought to cool the tempers saying, 'Let WikiLeaks not leak the country.'

But, agitated MPs continued shouting slogans against Chidambaram like 'Chidambaram, hosh main aao, hosh main aao, hosh main aao' (come to your senses) and 'desh ko mat todo, mat todo' (don't divide nation).

In the Rajya Sabha, Samajwadi Party member Ram Gopal Yadav raised the issue, saying Chidambaram's comments were an 'insult' to the nation.

'It endangers national integrity,' he said.

Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die, bringing the curtain down on the curtailed budget session.

.
So they wasted a session shouting slogans against the Home Minister. Great excuse to bunk work. If they felt so strongly on the issue they should have written to the HM asking for clarification on the issue. I guess the pressing issue of governing the country isn't as important as a demonstration now and then. Typical third world mentality

. . .
How can this moron chidambram forget that its only becoz of his congress and its allies (RJD) that north and east lagged behind the rest of India.

.
Well technically he may be true but he must understand he is Home Minister of 'India' and having the typical anti-North South Indian mentality doesn't suit him

ps: Bihar is growing at 13%

Now thats a borderline racial statement,u r painting this allegation on the entire South India's based on the remarks of 1 man that to which he conveyed privately,I am also a South India living in north of almost entire of my life, and I can also claim that the Typical north Indian mentality is anti south.

.
Irresponsible statement, if true. I dont forsee any major political shyte over this. Such things happen and people soon forget it when the next controversial statement comes through. Arent the people more concerned with how he does his duties as HM? I mean look at Modi!

.
too much divide within your country...who will get to keep the nukes once u disintegrate??north, south or China?

. . .
whats wrong in his statement......he said it rite..............UP and bihar are still in middle ages..............when they pick up .........that will be real dream run........

.
He is right, people from UP and Bihar are more into politics then work. They are also most dirtiest, and worst part is that if you tell them to stay clean. Hum kyoun karen ya, sadak tere bap ki hai type attitude is shown, instead of correcting himself.

I hate this attitude of theirs.

Note:- I am originally from UP, but this is something I cannot accept. We should be open to accept our weakness.

He is the home minister, if he knows this what is he doing about it !!
He is blaming UP and Bihar, and from this statement it seems as if he is wishing if India was only west and south, his govt. would have done much better.

Just one word
