Second, a video of hanging donkey in a response to Indian Technological Failure says something about your condition. I know you are angry and you feel insulted by comments like these but you would need to find 100s of such videos because this wasn't the last technological failure of Indian Scientists. No offense buddy.

By the way video was nice and I am waiting to see more of such videos but please wait until there is some similar forum again.

It must have given immense pleasure to many of our Pakistani members to see the ALH crash. It doesnt matter what could be the reason for the crash. Why on earth wait for an investigation when its so much fun to blame it all on those stupid good-for-nothing Indian scientists right? If this makes you sleep well... then good for you!

Ecuador suspends Indian-built helicopters

An Indian-built Dhruv, or Advanced Light Helicopter, has crashed at a military parade in Quito, Ecuador. Both the pilots of the helicopter are safe. The helicopter was one of seven sold by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to the Ecuadorian Armed Forces for 45 million dollars. As a result of the accident, the government has suspended the use of the remaining 6 helicopters, which includes the one used by Ecuador's President, Rafael Correa.
The helicopter crashed as Ecuadorean Armed Forcese were celebrating their 89th anniversary. Eye witnesses said the aircraft was flying in military formation when a fire began in the back portion of the helicopter and it started to spiral toward the ground. Firemen arrived at the scene immediately and put out the flames.

It is confirmed that it was pilot error .

Eyewitnesses, including some journalists, have testified to the Board of Inquiry that they saw a fire break out near the Dhruv's tail stem, after which the helicopter rolled abruptly to port 60-degrees and began losing altitude. At this point, the helicopter was about 300-metres from the airport's hangar area.

Ecuador's air chief General Rodrigo Bohorquez has been quoted as saying that the accident occured "because the turn was very long" and that the pilot "oversteered" the helicopter.

The pilot Luis Armas, who has 197 hours logged on the Dhruv, was trained in India in December 2008. Co-pilot Ivan Abril has logged 107 hours on the Dhruv so far.

Bangalore: Even as the Indiaexported ALH copter crashed in Ecuador and two pilots were injured on Tuesday, Ecuador pilots had told Indian officials that handlability, sophisticated technology and easy manouvreability was why they were thrilled with India’s Advanced Light Helicopter.
ALHs to Ecuador was the first export order for HAL
which presented eight ALHs to Ecuador in what is estimated to be a $ 65 million dollar contract. The first three ALHs were given to Ecuador at the Aero India 2009 air show at Yelahanka air base and five later. Based on the interest shown by Ecuador, Chile too was keen on purchasing the helicopter. Chile’s order was expected to be the second export order but the deal has reportedly been stalled.
Each ALH is roughly put at eight and a half million dollars taking into account the operating cost of a single machine with averages having been worked out between the two countries over cost.
“Ecuador’s agreement to buy the ALH comes in the wake of a positive response to the series of tests carried out in South America. The ALH has been tested in extreme cold conditions, the South American tropical and desert conditionsand has withstood the new atmosphere,” a defence official had told TOI.
Ecuadorian pilots after their training were so excited that they are reported to have requested authorities to place additional orders from HAL. Indian pilots are sharing their expertise with Ecuador pilots in the settlingin of the aircraft in Ecuador.
Defence officials had said once the copters exhibited consistency and durability in the initial operation period in Ecuador, orders from other countries should come. “It is word of mouth. If the machine settles in well, naturally they’d recommend it to their neighbours. We’re hoping everything will go according to plan,” a top official said.

HAL REACTION

An HAL spokesperson told TOI that an expert ALH team was already looking into how and why the crash happened. “The team has been stationed there to work with the Ecuador pilots to enable them to get a complete hold on the machine. The team is assisting the investigatioon process. At this juncture it would be premature to comment on the reasons for the crash.”

So... let me summarize the crash -

1) The pilots walked away from the crash (it says a lot about Dhruv's safety features).

2) The pilots involved in the crash themselves made a statement later that they love the Dhruv helicopter.

3) The commanding general of the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE), Rodrigo Bohorquez, said that the "28 helicopters bought from India met all the requirements requested for purchase".

4) Till now, Ecuador itself has pointed out three possible causes of crash including pilot error, mechanical failure or environmental factors.

Even though the main causes of the crash are yet to be determined, some members here have been jumping to conclusions and making silly remarks. Lame.

Sure, its fun to see you guys spending billions of dollars for something that doesn't work. I have kind of developed some love for DRDO and HAL

No one knows why it crashed, so you might want to hang on to your horses.

Even if it was a technical failure its not like HAL will give up, they'll rectify it and move on, failure is only the first step to success. Don't worry about India wasting its money, I think we can afford to splurge a little bit at the moment.

this is very embarrassing for HAL.
Their first export worthy product crashing in foreign lands and that to in a ceremonial event.
Ecuador has grounded it's entire Dhruv fleet...till further investigations.

I think its worse time to talk of any achievement of yours as the pride helicopter of India crashed during the airshow. The incident is not giving good vibes that you are attaching Nuclear Sub to that.

Though its bad from marketing perspective as far as HAL is concerned...However investigations are on...May be it was a Pilot error...if not there will be new things to learn and i am sure glitches will be fixed...but as far as bad publicity goes...look at this news..

There is no such thing as a perfect product. More to be learnt from a single crash than a 1000 hours of normal operations.

And... even if this crash did occur due to a mechanical failure, this would be the first such crash of a Dhruv helicopter.

Till date, only 1 more Dhruv helicopter crashed which was due to pilot error (and till date the only Dhruv incident which has involved deaths). 2 Dhruvs experienced hard landings but there was no permanent damage.

So... Dhruvs have a decent track record.

It was an accident. HAL would probably learn from this accident a great deal and possibly rectify the defects if any.
Besides, the maneuvers that the Ecuadorians were doing were not very extreme either. The Dhrv helicopter acrobatics team was much more impressive in their maneuvers!
The Indians would have noticed such a glaring flaw if there was a mechanical failure much earlier!
