Al-Azhar flays China’s Ramazan restriction

CAIRO - The leading Sunni Muslim seat of learning, Al-Azhar, condemned China Friday for imposing restriction on fasting in its mainly Muslim Xinjiang region during the holy month of Ramazan.

China has banned civil servants, students and teachers in Xinjiang from fasting during Ramazan which began on Thursday, and ordered restaurants to stay open.

“Al-Azhar and its grand imam, Ahmed al-Tayeb, condemn the Chinese authorities’ ban on Muslims from fasting and practising their religious rituals during Ramazan in some parts of the western Xinjiang region,” said a statement from the Cairo-based Al-Azhar.

Muslims fast from dawn to dusk during Ramazan, but China’s ruling Communist Party is officially atheist and for years has restricted the practice in Xinjiang, home to the mostly Muslim Uighur minority.

China says it faces a terrorist threat in Xinjiang, with officials blaming “religious extremism” for growing violence.

Uighur rights groups say China’s restrictions on Islam in Xinjiang have added to ethnic tensions there, where clashes have killed hundreds in recent years.

Well those from Pak are in no position to; after all how do you criticize the hand that feeds and arms you? Not sure why others don't.

Its also akin to what Bill Maher calls 'soft bigotry of low expectations'. One simply doesn't expect freedom in a totalitarian dictatorship such as China. So this is hardly news. If some free country did this, not only would there be condemnation from outside, but protests and legal cases within.

And that's the problem, I think all these Muslims that come to Australia etc should be shipped back home since they like it so much in those countries, don't see why they come to our countries and kill us.

They want to enjoy the economic benefits and at the same time impose their way of life on the host nation. You guys are still in good shape compared to Europe. Their open door immigration is soon going to produce results they won't appreciate. In some ways it already has.
