Yes - his contribution to world aerospace and that industry in Indonesia is not well publicized, and it should be.


Here is the Do 31 video, this German aircraft is the forerunner of today's F-22 and F-35 by seventy years. This is where vertical flight started. The British stole the technology and created Harriers etc.


Yup, of course it is easy for Western European companies to recruit those engineers involved on the project. Basically I see it as legally stolen, even Habibie is also asked by US government to find flaw in one of their Air Force plane ( I forget the type ) despite he was working for German, there is unity among NATO countries during that time as Soviet Union is still very strong during that time technology wise

Engineering career​

In 1962, Habibie returned to Indonesia for three months on sick leave. During this time, he was reacquainted with Hasri Ainun, the daughter of R. Mohamad Besari. Habibie had known Hasri Ainun in childhood, junior high school and in senior high school at SMA Kristen Dago (Dago Christian Senior High School), Bandung. The two married on 12 May 1962, returning to Germany shortly afterwards.[15] Habibie and his wife settled in Aachen for a short period before moving to Oberforstbach. In May 1963 they had a son, Ilham Akbar Habibie.[16]

Habibie later found employment with the railway stock firm Waggonfabrik Talbot, where he became an advisor in designing train wagons.[17] Due to his work with Makosh, the head of train construction offered his position to Habibie upon retirement three years later, but Habibie refused the position.[18][17]

In 1965, Habibie delivered his dissertation in aerospace engineering and received the grade of "very good," giving him the title Doktoringenieur (Dr.-Ing.). The same year, he accepted Hans Ebner's offer to continue his research on Thermoelastisitas and work toward his Habilitation, but he declined the offer to join RWTH as a professor. His thesis about light construction for supersonic or hypersonic states also attracted offers of employment from companies such as Boeing and Airbus, which Habibie again declined.[19]

Habibie did accept a position with Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm in Hamburg. There, he developed theories on thermodynamics, construction, and aerodynamics known as the Habibie Factor (thermodynamics), Habibie Theorem (construction), and Habibie Method (aerodynamics), respectively. He worked for Messerschmitt on the development of the Airbus A-300B aircraft. In 1974, he was promoted to vice president of the company.[20]

In 1974, Suharto recruited Habibie to return to Indonesia as part of his drive to industrialize and develop the country. Habibie initially served as a special assistant to Ibnu Sutowo, chief executive officer of the state oil company Pertamina and Chair of Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (Indonesian: Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi, BPPT). Two years later, Habibie was made CEO of the new state-owned enterprise Industri Pesawat Terbang Nurtanio (IPTN; Nurtanio Aircraft Industry),[20] which in 1985 changed its name to Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara (Nusantara Aircraft Industry; also abbreviated as IPTN) and is known as Indonesian Aerospace (PT. Dirgantara Indonesia) since 2000).

I am aware Harriers were culmination several years of British Aerospace efforts to develop fighter jet which doesn't need runways and after several initial failures managed to get it working in 1967

Its was major milestone set British Aerospace in the field, something even American or Soviet had not managed to achieve at that time
Americans were so impressed with it that project which went to become F-35 was initially conceived as replacement for Harriers

I just wanted a British perspective on it

Yak in Soviet Russia was making VTOL fighters about the same time as the UK first did. The first Soviet VTOL jet was Yak 36, shown below. Although development began the same time as in the UK, It first publicly flew in 1963, about the same time as the P1127 - which was the Harriers' grand daddy. So there's your UK "milestone".

P1127 (experimental) was developed into Kestrel, then to Harrier in the UK in the early sixties.

Last time I checked the per capita Nominal GDP, that of your country was worse than that of Bangladesh.

Your country is officially poorer than Bangladesh and is of course way worse in many Health and Education HDI parameters as well.

Per capita GDP for PPP terms is still a little better, but not for long, I assure you. No cause for jealousy.

Bangladesh is the third or fourth largest remittance source for India, there are at least five or six lakh illegal Indian workers working in Dhaka alone.

Your economy runs on help from Bangladesh, at least partially. Your tourism and health sectors in India run exclusively on Bangladesh patronage.

Bangladesh is your cash cow.

And of course India's per capita GDP nominal is far below that of Indonesia, not even in the same league.

And your bhakts are insulting Indonesian aerospace, comedy at its best.

If you had concentrated on producing Lungis instead of paying the HAL idiots for aerospace structures, maybe would have come to some use.
