People often compare old R-77 with new Amraams, but here's a video comparing newest variants of both. R-77-1 compared to AIM-120D.

But who knows if there's even enough public data to make any comparison accurate...

Raytheon, USAF developing new signal processor for AMRAAM
Refresh helps ensure modern air-to-air missile production into the next decade
TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 31, 2017

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and the U.S. Air Force are developing a new signal processor for the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile under the Form Fit Function Refresh program, or F3R. The refresh will help ensure AMRAAM production well into the 2020s.

The new program comes as the government and industry team completes production of the 20,000th AMRAAM. With 10 combat victories and more than 4,200 successful test firings, AMRAAM remains the most proven and most technologically advanced air-to-air weapon ever produced.

"AMRAAM is and always has been the best missile of its kind," said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, president of Raytheon's Missile Systems business. "With the Air Force, we have evolved it beyond expectation, and we will continue to innovate to stay far ahead of the threats our armed services face."

AMRAAM's ability to track targets in electronic warfare environments makes it the leader in the air-to-air arena. Procured by 37 nations, AMRAAM has flown on more aircraft worldwide than any other air-to-air missile.

About AMRAAM

  • AMRAAM is currently flying on the F-16, F-15, F/A-18, F-22, Typhoon, Gripen, Tornado and Harrier.
  • The AIM-120C5 and AIM-120C7 variants were fully integrated on the F-35 in 2015, in support of U.S. Marine Corps' initial operational capability for F-35B, and AMRAAM is the only air-to-air missile qualified on the F-35.
  • Fielded in 2015, the AIM-120D variant is the newest air-to-air weapon in the U.S. arsenal and has significant capability improvements, including increased range, GPS-aided navigation, two-way data link and improved weapons effectiveness.
  • With more than 4,200 test firings, no other air-to-air missile in the world has been as thoroughly tested or improved as AMRAAM.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Raytheon has been awarded a more than $82-million contract to produce AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and supporting equipment for the US Navy as well as for Poland, Romania, Belgium and Indonesia, the Department of Defense announced in a press release.

"Raytheon Co., Missile Systems, Tucson, Arizona, is being awarded $82,818,665 to a previously awarded contract for procurement of 180 AIM-9X Block II all-up-round tactical full-rate production Lot 17 missiles for the Air Force (52); Navy (8); and the governments of Poland (93); Indonesia (14); Romania (10); and Belgium (3)," the release stated on Wednesday.

Under the terms of the contract, Raytheon must also provide supporting equipment to include missile containers, air training missiles, guidance units and spare parts, the release added.

PL21

This new ultra long-range active radar homing AAM has been under development which appears similar to British Meteor. It features an active radar seeker and an integrated ramjet/solid rocket motor with a single or twin variable belly air inlets. PL-21 might feature 4 small stabilizing fins behind the active radar seeker, a characteristics of Russian R-27/AA-10. Two-way datalink antennas may have been installed in the tail section for mid-course correction. The maximum range of PL-21 is estimated to be 400km, effective range is 320km. It was rumored that the first ground launch test took place in March 2010. Similar to PL-20, PL-21 is expected to be carried by J-16 even Su-35S for long-range interception against enemy transport aircraft and AWACS. It is also expected to be carried internally by the new generation of stealth fighters including J-20 and FC-31.
