Air strikes on a hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz that killed 19 people were "tragic, inexcusable and possibly even criminal", the UN human rights chief says.

High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein urged a full and transparent investigation into the attack.

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres said at least 12 of its staff and seven patients were killed.

US forces were carrying out air strikes at the time.

At least 37 people were seriously injured, 19 of them MSF staff.

UN High Commissioner Zeid earlier said: "International and Afghan military planners have an obligation to respect and protect civilians at all times, and medical facilities and personnel are the object of a special protection.

"These obligations apply no matter whose air force is involved, and irrespective of the location."
"All indications currently point to the bombing being carried out by international Coalition forces," MSF said.

The Nato alliance has admitted its forces may have hit the hospital.

US President Barack Obama expressed his "deepest condolences" for the deaths in a White House statement. But he said he would wait until the US defence department had conducted its own investigation before making a definitive judgement on the incident.

.
So a professional military attacks a hospital, worrying signs indeed.

.
The most technological advanced/sophisticated military in the world couldn't tell if it was a hospital? This is worrying.

Well if they didn't know it was a hospital, then it was an accident.

Quite a cavalier attitude - US forces have been known to shoot first and ask questions later.

Let an independent inquest determine whether the act was committed in cognizance of the fact that it was an hospital or not.

If it was known that the target was an hospital with likely presence of civilians then the bombing was unpardonable criminal criminal act.

Convenience is never an excuse.

If it was known that the target was an hospital with likely presence of civilians then the bombing was not only unpardonable but downright criminal.

Convenience is never an excuse.

The investigation is already underway.

. . .
Lets hope NATO do a final troop surge and suppress militants on Eastern front.

Has the Afghan government, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah blamed Pakistan and ISI yet fot this attack by NATO forces on a hospital? Not yet? :o oh my dear Ashraf Ghani andAbdullah Abdullah..what happened to your efficiency..why became so lazy? Come on...buck up..pull up ur socks fast.... A statement accusing Pakistan for this is long due.... This happened yday and yet no blame on Pakistan? Oh wait... U know Gen Raheel Sharif was in UK for 3 days.... Maybe he was there to whisper to Uk leadership and deliberately give faulty intelligence and asked them to pass on Nato forces to attack a hospital... Because u know, Pak army and ISI have nothing better to do , else than getting Afghans killed... This is their only aim in life...hence they deliberately passed on faulty inteligence to Nato, hence Nato forces are totally innocent... They are not at fault... Or even if they are, who cares? U obviously dont have guts tospeak against them....Because u dont get paid by ur indian masters to talk against NATO... Its only evil Pak army and ISI at work here, also...make sure, this incident doesnt make u loose focus... So better come up with statement against Pakistan soon

Dont worry, they will say we are sorry and thats it.

They have two terminologies for such criminals acts:
1- collateral damage
2- friendly fire
