Air India to run 230 special flights for Hajj pilgrims

August 17, 2015

Air India will operate a 340-seater B777-300ER aircraft during the two phases that will fly the pilgrims to and from Jeddah.

Air India has prohibited its cabin crew from taking leave during Haj season when the national carrier flies passengers for their pilgrimage to holy cities in Saudi Arabia.

A circular sent to employees on June 9 said that cabin crew should not apply for leave between August 4 and October 16. “Strict compliance please,” the circular said.

Air India chairman and managing director Ashwani Lohani declined to comment on the decision to ban leave. Sources in the airline, however, said the decision indicated that there was a shortage of cabin crew and that the airline plans to increase the number of Haj flights this year. While the schedule for this Haj season has not been released, the airline operated 230 flights carrying approximately 40,000 pilgrims in two phases last year.

Members of the cabin crew who were upset with the decision said that the management had taken an unrelenting stand on the issue when it was discussed a few days back. “Since last year the crew has been denied leave during Diwali, Christmas and now the Haj season. If there is such a serious manpower crunch why don’t they hire?” said a senior air hostess.

Last week, citing safety issues, the airline had barred employees from being deployed on the same flight with family members. Many Air India flight crew members have relatives working in other positions; many pilots are married to colleagues who could be posted for work in the same flight. Some have children and siblings working in the same airline. “There seems to be an effort to harass the crew by denying them family time,” said a flight purser.

I thought it is worst....I am surprised

also so many china airlines in top 10 worst list

.
I'm surprised it's not the number one in the list....!
Only positive thing is onboard food is pretty decent!!

I did travel in Air India once. It was good, except of sore sight of aunties and one of them even behaved like rude. But the real efficiency will be known how they handle immediate ticket problems, customers complaints and delays. Air India is definitely not No 3 in worst list. Nor KLM is world's best airline.

With Air India taking exception to a survey that put it among the worst performing airlines globally, aviation data company Flightstats today said it does not rank airlines on the basis of "On Time Performance" and that a media outlet "inverted" its data.

In a communication to Air India, the Portland-based company said a media outlet put the government-run airline in a "negative light" and that by no means it endorsed the portrayal of its performance.

The company said it reports flight status and performance data from trusted sources that include airlines, airports, GDS systems, civil aviation authorities and positional data sources.

"While we do highlight exceptional performers, we do not and have not highlighted low performance or maintain a list of worst performing airlines," it said.

Air India had, in a strongly worded letter to Flightstats on January 10, not only contested the survey findings but had also termed it as an attempt to "tarnish its image".

Flightstats said it stands by its data, collection systems, reporting based on these data sources and its validation methodologies.

It said it would be "happy to work with Air India with regards to that data that we have sourced to compare with your own data".

All data is reported using the industry standard A14 metric, which measures the percentage of on-time actual gate arrivals within 14:59 of scheduled gate arrival, it said.

"Our data, which was a measure of 97.7 per cent of your arriving flights, indicated that 61.29 per cent of AI's flight arrived within the A14 threshold," the communication said.

The media outlet applied its "journalistic license to invert the A14 result to highlight the percentage of delayed flights as 38.17 and indicated that the number was a predictor to future delays", it said.

"This is not how we would portray airline On Time Performance," Flightstats said.

At least AI is a safe airline, PIA could learn a few safety lessons, unfortunately PIA is a poor and bloated airline with a very dodgy safety culture. The worst of all combinations for an industry that has to be well maintained to operate.

anyone in India will agree to this.....That bad airline didn't serve wine on my way to London from Mumbai few years back....bad airline!

.
Women-only planes?

Indian men are so unattractive and/or disrespectful to women that women are harrassed even in planes to the point that women-only planes are contemplated?

.
I would have believed this list had they not put El-al as #1. Even Ethiopian is routinely terrible.

It's not only about the service - probably because of the risk (terrorism) associated with flying it.

Surprised to see Korean Air in the list!

CBI has registered a case against unknown officials of Air India, German firm SAP AG and global computer major IBM in connection with alleged irregularities in procurement of software worth Rs 225 crore by the national carrier in 2011.

The agency has registered the case on the recommendation of the Central Vigilance Commission which found prima facie procedural irregularities in the procurement of the software, CBI sources said.

After considering the reports of Chief Vigilance Officer of Air India, the Commission in a communication to CBI said it was of the view that there were "serious procedural and other irregularities" in the procurement as well as amount paid and extent of services rendered.

The CVC had asked the CBI to probe the "irregularities in the tendering process and award of contract and undue benefit caused to the SAP/IBM".

It had also asked the agency to investigate whether any of the persons who dealt with the issue at IBM and in the government got any financial or other benefits, besides irregularities relating to the registration by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposal.

CBI has registered the FIR under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and cheating.

Ministry for Development of North-East Region

Dr Jitendra Singh lauds Indigo decision to fly 'mortal remains' free to Northeast

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh has lauded the Indigo decision to fly "mortal remains" of deceased human beings free of cost to various destinations in the North East. “A request to this effect had been made to all the Airlines operating in the region and I am glad that Indigo has been prompt to respond”, he said.

The Vice President of Indigo Airlines, Shri Vikram Chona personally called on Dr Jitendra Singh here and formally handed over a letter from the President of Indigo, Shri Aditya Ghosh addressed to Dr Jitendra Singh, stating that, as a part of “Aakhri Aahuti” initiative, the Indigo has decided to carry mortal human remains of the deceased people of North East States, free of charge, to such North East airports where Indigo has its operations. The letter further stated that from Delhi, Indigo is currently operating to Guwahati, Agartala, Dibrugarh, Dimapur and Imphal.

Shri Vikram Chona also informed Dr Jitendra Singh that, as and when the Indigo starts operations to other destinations in North East, the same facility, free of cost, shall be provided on those routes as well. He also informed that the first such, free of cost, facility was provided to a native of Manipur living in Delhi who unfortunately passed away and his mortal remains were flown to Imphal. Shri Chona also acknowledged the cooperation received from Delhi Police in this initiative and from the Delhi Police Joint Commissioner and Nodal Officer for North East people in Delhi.

Dr. Jitendra Singh complimented and thanked Indigo Airlines on behalf of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and stated that people from North Eastern States residing in Delhi often faced a very unfortunate situation whenever there was a death in the family. Due to financial constraints, the relatives of the deceased were often unable to take the dead body to their native place in North East. As a result, he said, very often, the last rites of several such deceased persons had to be carried out in Delhi itself by compulsion, even though, the relatives and the family wished otherwise.

Dr Jitendra Singh said that the gesture shown by Indigo, is not only a reflection of human concern, but is also an extension of the PPP (Public Private Partnership) model with the Government and private sectors jointly offering services to citizens at different levels and in different situations.
