Air Force aims higher - Seeks major purchases by 2021

Considering the 'performance' of the navy and the airforce in 1971, you might want to keep this under wraps in the future :D
Did you say all your wrapping things in the context of Pakistan military debackles in the 1971 war? What do you expect when half the population living 1500 km away were helping its arch enemy in that war? All the Bangalis in the army, navy and airforce of the Pakistan military in west Pakistan were not allowed a combat role at all. All of them were grounded or under house arrest.

On the other hand, when Pakistan army was trying to control the situation in the east, their Bangali colleagues of East Bengal Regiment were seeking their bloods with the help of India. At least 15,000 of the west Pakistan born troops were killed in combats with the Liberation Army troops in the flood prone land of Bengal before the 1971 India-Pakistan war started.

You better wrap your AHANKAR under your shoes until you face a big defeat by one or two of your enemy countries in your neighbourhoods. By the way, Indian airforce bombed and destroyed all its gift coastal ships in the final days of war in 1971. Was it not an intentional attack in a ploy to stop BD from building a navy? Whatever it might have been, we are not supposed to pay money for those India-supplied junk ships.

Note that our navy is in the process of shortly procuring two submarines from Turkey.

So, BNS Palash and BNS Padma were coastal crafts induced during the 1971 war of liberation. Thank you for that wartime contribution. There were other smaller crafts as well that we received from you. You have good reason to brag.

The information was posted by me against some posts by BD members about non-procurement/usage of Indian Military hardware. Now donation or purchase I am not sure but BD has used Indian Hardware in the past that was the point.

We started our navy with less than 50 sailors in 1971. Now, we have more than 40,000 troops in the navy. Today, the Khulna Shipyard is building large ships and smaller missile crafts with technical collaboration from Pakistan navy and China.

Perhaps, you know that the Pakistan Navy was dominated by the Bangalis, and its airforce was almost dominated by them. It was the army where the Punjabis dominated.

See the link below to kinow more about the present status of our not-so-small navy.
American Chronicle | In war and Peace Invincible at Sea: Bangladesh Navy

Off topic. The topic is related to BAF.

Ours are with P-20, Sea-Eagle, BrahMos, K-35, KLUB and god knows what all. Whats the point here?

Its not about what BD buys and intend to use against whom?

The main question is how they plan to maintain the new hardware? The question comes in my mind after their history with the MiG-29 maintainance.

Any idea from where the money will come to buy all this?

If Bangladesh could afford migs in 2001,we can definitely afford better SAM system by 2021.Its that simple.

BTW Bangladeshi Migs are back in service after being grounded for couple of years. But I think we should sell these birds and go for better SAM systems and single engined fighters.

The role of a mig-29 in a war zone is to protect the bomber jets from being attacked by enemy jets. When the bombers are in a mission to attack a land-based enemy asset, the Migs accomany them and engage the enemy fighters. It means Migs have a well-defined role in a war.

So, why BD has to get rid of its Migs if it must then have to procure jets with similar function. SAM is what should be our main line of defence from now on, but it should not be at the expense of Mig-29s.

Our doctrine has always been defensive, not an offensive one.Migs are air superiority fighters and are expensive to maintain for a country like ours.We are not going to attack any country,so why do we need air superiority fighters for?

If there is threat from intruders,It is better to let them come to us instead of going to them.Because with 8 migs, our adventure will be over within an hour.
For now better SAMs and interceptors, and in future we can go for air superiority fighters. But those has to be inexpensive to maintain, otherwise they are just going to waste taxpayers' money.Migs and Sukhois certainly does not fit the criteria.
At the end of the day it depends on BAF and BD govt. to decide what will they go for.

You need best deterrant to have a best defence. Migs regardless of numbers work as a deterrrant for any intruder if they know they have to face some Migs before they enter BD air space. Even US pilots with F-15 think twice facing a Mig. That is just the fact. You also need SAM to back Migs up or any other air superiority fighters. SAMs can be neutralize with jammers, also SAMs are vulnerable to radar detecting missiles. So most of the SAMS cant be activated before 5 seconds of striking distance of any intruding aircraft. But SAMS are very effective against long range missile which its name itself explains (Strategic Anti Missile System).

Mig29 itself is a good fighter however i would be worried about spares etc from Russia. They might as well send crappy spares to BD as it only has few jets.I think BD needs single engine fighter. If it needs high end fighter then Gripen NG would be best bet.You can even take them off from high ways or motor ways!

The overall philosophy of BD military is defensive, because, simply speaking, BD lacks offensive capability. Even then, during the CTG last year, a situation arose when BD, in reality, took offensive measures against Burma in the Bay of Bengal.

In a warlike situation, the two words offensive and defensive overlap each other. In a war, with or without a defensive doctrine, a country will not just wait for the enemy to come inside its border. In a war, it is natural that the two adversaries will cross the border and attack each other's assets.

By the way, in another forum, and also here in a post by iajdani, I have read the number of our Migs at 16. Anyway, if Migs are expensive to maintain, then these may be sold. But, similar fighter planes are definitely to be purchased. Patriot said about single engine gripen NG jets in his post that may serve our offensive purpose. Is this plane made in France?

^^^ Swedish. I think Jf-17 is a better cost effective option.

i hope bangladesh become a major threat by 2021
wrong choice of word.We don't want to become a threat but make sure nobody messes with us.

The hell they didn't.That was still defensive and still proved to be effective.Weren't they carrying out exploration in disputed waters?

AAMs can also be jammed with jammers if the intruding plane has proper electronic countermeasures.

Yes they might act as a strong deterrent against Myanmar, but not against Indian Sukhois,Considering India as potential intruder.

Now it depends which SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) we will invest on.If we are to spend big money, why not on S-300 PMU?It will be expensive, but that will act as even stronger deterrent than 8 Mig-29s which have little BVR capability. You do agree that our Migs have little BVR capability, don't you?

Gripen is Swedish fighter and would be a fine choice if we can afford them. Moreover we don't have any ban on them like Pakistan. But the question is with its maintenance. Is it maintenance friendly? Can anyone shed some light on it.

J-10 might be a good choice too.
Jf-17 is cost effective, but it serves a different role. But BAF might be interested in it.According to some reports,BAF showed interest on Jf-17s.
About Mig numbers, since its disputed, let's be prudent and assume we have 8.As far as I know we have 8,and other 8's order was cancelled by Khaleda Zia.

Well, you did not get me. I am not opponent to SAMs. We need SAMs to fill the gap of the defficiency of the airforce for good fighters. If you just take out all the fighters and deploy only SAMs, how long will you be able to hold? 2 days at best I suppose.
Against India yes we do need more fighters as well as SAMs but not by reducing the fighters.
