Even for China, where companies have struggled with race issues in their marketing previously, the latest inflight magazine from the country's flagship airline will likely come as a shocker.

Air China's Wings of China carries a long feature on visiting London, with almost a third of the magazine dedicated to tourist attractions in Britain's capital and other famous towns such as Oxford. The main article, titled "London the city of 'hat tricks'," covers Brits' apparent fondness for all kinds of hats.

Then, after a section on transport options and lifestyle and cultural activities in London, Wings of China offers some "Tips from Air China."

"London is generally a safe place to travel, however precautions are needed when entering areas mainly populated by Indians,Pakistanis and black people," China's flagship carrier advises. "We advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when travelling."

"Tips from Air China" on safety when visiting London

The advice is at odds with the London promoted by its Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Brit with Pakistani parents, who in July launched a #LondonisOpen campaign and frequently blogs about his favorite places to eat and drink in his South London Indian-Pakistani neighborhood of Tooting.

Meanwhile, Britain is an increasingly popular destination for Chinese tourists. According to government agency VisitBritain, more than 270,000 Chinese visited Britain in 2015, up 46 percent on the previous year. This was after the number of Chinese tourists doubled in the five years to 2014. Chinese visitors spent 586 million pounds ($786 million) in total in Britain in 2015, up 18 percent on 2014.

And in January, Britain launched a new, two-year, multiple-entry visa in a bid to woo even more Chinese visitors to its shores, following changes made in 2015 that allowed tourists and business travelers to apply for both British and European visas in a single process.

Chinese companies have been criticized previously for their depictions of various races. In May, a Chinese laundry detergent-maker apologized for an advertisement that showed an Asian woman shoving a dirt-smeared black man into a washing machine, only for him to emerge as a clean Asian man.

Some Western media called the ad, which ran on Chinese social media platforms, "the most racist commercial ever."

Air China did not respond to CNBC's request for comment on its London safety tips.

Similar safety pamphlets are also distributed by other international airways but this kind of ethnic specific is not positive.

The article has shit loads of spelling mistakes. Didn't expect it from CNBC

Is it racist make Pakistani people live in slums or actually saying it?

It all comes down to the same thing. Pakistani neighbourhood is not London's best. We know that. There is a higher crime rate in minority neighbourhoods. Sure.

Angla Saxon way of thinking is fine with making Pakistani people live in slums but is not fine when you actually say the reality.

Can we have some figures regarding that point?

Yeah true. And London doesn't belong to Turkey. Anything about London, is about UK and their system.

Can we have some figures regarding that point?

No you won't be able to. Because hipster science prevents you from getting such figures. Crime is commited in poor neighbourhoods. That's common sense for me. Poor neighbourhoods are the root cause. Not Pakistanis, Turks, Indians or any other minority. Don't get anything wrong here. You can't hear any bad word about Pakistani people from me.

Poverty = Crime. That's a common sense knowledge. If UK manages to develop Pakistani neighbourhoods and make them prosperous those neighbourhoods will have much less crime.

Nailed it.

Pakistani neighbourhoods
Your implying that crime is bad in Pakistan areas or another way of saying they are poor. I disagree. Whilst Pakistan neighbourhoods are not the best but we have empirical data to show there are others that are far, far worse, including some Anglo-Saxon areas. The murder capital of UK is Boston

Not a sign of any Pakistani there. Full of Eastern Europeans though

Most deprived neighbourhoods in UK - Not a Pakistani there

Link > http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/10-worst-deprived-places-england-6548105

These are hard data. Not what BNP and other right wing shout. Facts, facts, facts ....

Pakistani's have done terrible job in negative self publicity - sprouting beards, refusing to integrate, supporting radical politics to annoy the mainstrean community and because of that have been target of scapegoating by the the media. Being Muslims and in the face type of Muslims as well has not done them any favour in the times we live in today.

Pakistani's however are one of the most hardworking groups in UK with one of the highest home ownership rates in UK. I have rarely come across a Pakistani who does NOT own his own home - even if it is a terrace. On the other hand some other communties in UK live by shanking off from council or public housing flats.

"Drawing on 2011 census data, the Race Equality Foundation shows that Bangladeshi households are 63 per cent and Black African households 75 per cent more likely than white British households to suffer ‘housing deprivation’ (indicators of which include overcrowding and an absence of central heating). White Gypsy and Irish Traveller households are seven and-a-half times more likely to experience deprivation in this way.

In 2011, more than 50 per cent of the people in the Indian, White British, Pakistani, White Irish and Chinese groups lived in a home owned outright or with a mortgage. Home ownership was lowest among Black African and Arab groups (24 and 27 per cent respectively). Home ownership amongst all ethnic groups decreased between 1991 and 2011."

My personal opinion: The sole purpose of "Tips from Air China" is to help travelers, predominantly Chinese, who are unfamiliar with their travel destinations. Their motive is sincere, however I do think they could have done it with a lot more caution, be very sensitive towards how it's being perceived by people of different cultures, in order to avoid such misunderstanding.

P.S.: All different opinions or arguments are welcome, be reminded to stay on-topic and keep the discussions clean, thanks!

Advisory should say avoid crime ridden or high crime areas. Stressing on Indian/Pakistani area is really bad and utterly racist. Its not as if white neighborhoods are filled with roses & daisies.

chapattis?
 I dont think any one will waste tasty hot rotis.

My dear Chinese posters, here is the truth about which areas in London are the most dangerous.

https://www.findahood.com/articles/crime/londons-top-10-most-dangerous-boroughs/8

As you can see, not one of those areas is one where Pakistanis or Indians are dominant. The areas that have high Indian populations such as Harrow, Brent, Hillingdon and Ealing have low levels of crime. The Pakistani areas such as Ilford, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest are also low in crime .

Here is a map for your viewing with the top London crime spots.

Taken from the blog;

http://lesscrime.info/londons-violent-crime-hotspots/

Top crime spots;
  1. Soho and Leicester Square
  2. Shoreditch
  3. Brixton
  4. Camden Town
  5. Whitechapel
  6. Hackney town centre
  7. Ladbroke Grove and Kensal Town
  8. Elephant and Castle
  9. Peckham town centre
  10. Croydon town centre
  11. Archway
  12. Stratford town centre
  13. Shepherd’s Bush
  14. Kings Cross and Angel
  15. Dalston
  16. Edgware Road and Marble Arch
  17. Poplar
  18. Woolwich
  19. Kingston town centre
  20. Wood Green

None of these areas have a Pakistani or Indian population.

Some official tables from the London Metropolitan police force

You must also remember that London is huge, and many areas which have landmarks which attract Chinese tourists by the droves are in boroughs that have high crime rates, but these areas are so far away, you will not ever enter them.

I think the Chinese national carrier is just worried that an Indian shopkeeper wants to sell you phone cards all day long;

"Han jee, 5 pounds only, call Beijing all day long"

Or the Pakistani uncle who will become your best friend, once he knows you are Chinese. Be ready for a long conversation and hugs.

nothing wrong with the tourist company wanting to protect their Chinese customers. My GPS allow me to avoid bad areas.
Not all bad areas are dominated by dark skin people, There are bad areas with white people

of course. Not sure what the fuss is about. Tourist companies can lose a lot of business even with one tourist get robbed. Chinese have money so obviously priority one for people with money.

Having lived in London before, I can report that Indian and Pakistani areas are not glamorous, but tend to be safe. The neighborhoods to watch out for are populated by blacks and chavs. Recently, I've heard a lot of reports of Poles being murdered in Essex.

It's the western media trying to shove PCness down China's throat.
