CHITRAL:

Flood-affected people in Chitral on Saturday demanded relief from the Punjab government after the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government failed to provide any assistance in the district.

Addressing journalists at the Chitral Press Club, Advocate Ghulam Hazrat Inqilabi, Muhammad Ubair, Shakiruddin and Muhammad Wali said residents are spending their days under the open sky, but the district administration has yet to take any measures to help them.

“Nothing has been done to clear the roads or to prevent the situation from deteriorating further,” said Inqilabi. He added they will migrate from the area and hold protests outside parliament if their demands are not met.

“We are frustrated by the utter lack of interest from the provincial government and have sought Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s help,” said Wali. He added they have presented their demands for relief to District Disaster Management Authority Chairman Muhammad Shoaib Jadoon and other officials, but they have not replied.

Wali said the cold response from local officials have further compounded their miseries, adding they are already disconnected from Chitral city because the road linking it to Bumburet in Kalash Valley was washed away by floodwater on July 31.

Prices of daily items have also shot up due to a shortage of edibles in the market.

Oh sh*t - We're facing flood related troubles here in Punjab as well !

But I think that the Punjab Government should extend all possible help to Chitral not only in the present but also with an eye towards the future i.e some capacity building to ward of future flood related problems !

CHITRAL:

Residents of Bomberet and Rambor valley of Kalash blocked the Ayun-Bomberet and Ayun-Rambor road to protest against the lack of assistance in wake of floods in the area.

More than 500 people organised a rally and blocked the main routes from 10am to 1pm, chanting slogans and alleging the provincial government has stopped rehabilitation in affected areas.

Leading the protest, Kalash elders Bahram Shah and Qari Muhammad Nasir claimed that since they did not elect a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate in the May elections, they are being neglected and developmental work has stopped.

While addressing the audience, Bahram Shah said more than 600 families in Chitral were affected by the deadly monsoons, with Kalash valley sustaining the most damage as around 15 kilometres of the road was washed away by rainwater. “We have to travel on mules and donkeys as it is impossible for vehicles to pass through the narrow roads that are now left.”

Qari Nasir said he visited Chitral Commissioner Shoaib Jadoon along with other elders to talk about the reconstruction, but the commissioner said there are not enough funds to proceed.

“People now have to pay Rs30 to Rs50 more for every kilogramme of food they purchase as it is brought from other areas,” Nasir said, adding the people are poor and cannot afford this for long.

The protesters warned the government of more demonstrations if the roads are not opened in two days. “We will block the Chitral-Peshawar road if funds are not dispersed immediately, said Nasir.

As a Pakistani, I guess not only Punjab but all other provinces should help each other. Political point scoring should be withheld in certain areas. I hope Shahbaz Sharif and People of Punjab be able to help their brethren in KPK.

From what i have heard, the Army seems to be every where. Punjab, KPK, Balochistan and Sind. All the Provincial governments in our country need to step up and form their own rescue service. Lessons must be learned for next time

Indeed since this time around the rivers of sutluj, chenab and ravi are flooded thus Punjab would have been an obvious victim. I suggest Punjab government should build a layer of small storage reserviors on Ravi, Jehlam and Sutluj at least so as to not only to reduce the threat of floods but also to store the precious flood water which could be subsequently used. Every year we let this excess water to flood our lands and then go waste to sea but rather make it use-able for the rest of the year.

Actually Ideas lead to plans and then actions....
whats more favorable is that these rivers are usually shallow. So these reservoirs can be built with minimal disruptions to main stream flow. Design can be made for the maintenance of natural flow for the rest of the year (by installing lower gateways) while maintaining this flow artificially in flooded times (perhaps by installing upper gateways). Well things can be worked out if there is a will.

I believe natural system is the best system. If trees are planted, they will ensure less pollution, cool temperatures and depth of water table during floods from our rich soil. Its unfortunate to see widend pathways made out of asphalt and concrete.

What is lacking at moment is "funds" or else these measure would have been implemented long ago. According to national disaster management authority, they need 115 billion rs to build proper infrastructure for to avoid floods.

Pakistan seriously lack skills in disaster management these events are likely to increase in future provinces should form a committe of some form who can train people in such skills

Only Two words, More Canals, and more Dam. During whole flood season, Terbella and Mangla both are busy in filling up the dam.

This global warming will hit more to south asia, in coming years, and this is the right time to build more rain forest, doing something to protect Himalaya's Glaciers and making huge reservoirs to save this sweet water for future... This can boost tourism industry, which is backbone of many countries.
