US stayed for 20 years, did whatever they wanted with the place but other than physically exterminating the population who opposed it (this is the only way to win in a foreign place with a hostile population) ,there isn't much more they can do.
Pakistan should be very worried about this withdrawal because a taliban/al qaeda/isis infested Afghanistan will spillover into Pakistan. You can't keep the snakes tamed forever.

At the current rate...Taliban will control more then 80% of Afghanistan by Sept.11. Only way forward I see is if the Bonn framework government in Kabul accepts oversight and subservience to the Taliban leadership council in Kandahar. That way an internationally approved government remains in Kabul for receiving/dispensing international aid and external actors can save face. Idiots like Hamdullah Mohib and Amrullah Saleh will have to get visas and flee abroad.
