Afghanistan seeks defence ties with India
New Delhi: Afghanistan has sought a deepening of defence ties with India including the supply of lethal weapons and hardware and Indian Roots on the ground.
Afghan ambassador to India Shaida M. Abdali, briefing journalists on Thursday ahead of a three-day visit to India by Afghan president Hamid Karzai next week, said: Your security investment in Afghanistan is to protect you from the spillover effects from Afghanistan.
The comments come about a year ahead of the international troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.
We would like to go beyond the current trend of cooperation, he said, referring to the defence cooperation between India and Afghanistan in training of Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police personnel in India.
So we are seeking more, he said.
When asked whether he would like to see Indian troop presence in Afghanistan, Abdali said the matter and other defence cooperation were under discussion. He also urged India not to look at Afghanistan through the prism of Pakistan. India and Afghanistan are two independent nations and neither should look at their bilateral relationship through the prism of their ties to Pakistan, he said.
The Indian government, which has been uneasy with committing military troops to Afghanistan, did not immediately comment on Abdalis remarks.
