he deposed hid cousin king zahir khan and took over the country and became prime minister he was a pashtun nationalist and he tried to presuade our tribal elders to join him but they decided to whip his a$$
he started a border conflict with pakistan by sending afghan regulars and tribals into pakistan
in 1955, our embassy in Kabul saw our flag being taken down, burnt and insulted. The flag of Pashtunistan being raised. Daoud Khan, the PM of Afghan then fully supported this movement against us.

We then blocked many supplies into Afghanistan, trade routes, aid routes. Even banned travel for some of them.This led to tough times for the Afghan economy. In fact, they even had to enlist the help of the soviets, to air lift supplies in to Kabul.

That is debatable, but President Zia probably thought it was advantageous for Pak to support US efforts in countering USSR in Afghanistan. Reagen administration believed that if Afghanistan fell to Soviets (in my opinion it already was in influence of USSR prior to that), it will open flood gates to middle east and from there it would be no turning back. In late 70s, Iran Iraq already had bitter relations and after Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was disposed in revolution, US didn't have any choice but to court Pakistan on the matter and honestly, Pak had quite a clout with tribal leaders.
Whether Zia was right in helping US, well that is subjective, in my mind probably it was.

there was another option it was better it was proposed by ZAB
it required a treaty to be signed by pakistan and soviets in which pakistan would give them a route to arabian sea and persian gulf and in return they wont meddle in afghan and pakistan internal affair
it would have been buisness as usual no war would have had happen
but zia never trusted soviets probably because of his hatred for communists

That failed state turned 2 invading super powers back to their home humiliated.

Yet it lost half it's territory because of a non super power like India . Russia lost because of US , not because of Pakistan. US hardly "lost" in Afghanistan. Barely 4000 US soldiers were killed. On the other hand , at least a million afghan civillian and terrorists died.

So all these women were in burqas and the men were wearing long flowing beards during the times of Zahir Shah and the communist regime. I guess it wasn't the Taliban after all who imposed it on them. I suppose it is part of the local culture.
