Hey Guys!

I have a non-IT background but I want to jump in the world of AI

But I am bit nervous

Would I be able to compete with a guy who holds a 4 year college/university degree in AI?

I mean there is serious competition and what are the chances of success for a person who is new to AI and have no IT background?

I would recommend you to do some online course first, get the feel of the thing that you want to learn. After doing the course, you'll understand whether you like AI or not. And trust me, AI requires a lot of math. Data science is quite a vast field and AI is just one part of it. Since further down the thread you have mentioned that you have done a business degree and because you are 30 already, I believe data analytics/data engineering would be a better role for you. Explore all these things and then decide what you really want to do. I too was considering data science at one point but after exploring these different domains, I came to the conclusion that software engineering is more suitable for me.
And trust me, even once you decide on one, it won't be easy entering these domains. You need to build a solid portfolio before getting your job.

You won't be able compete with guys who have 4 year
But you can add certifications to "complement" your own 4 years degree

Like for buisness guys - get into data analytics courses
That's the next big thing

Think of all the data out there we can use to our advantage

Agreed. There are countless people who have done MBA and have gone into data analytics/business analytics and have excelled because that's a really great combo to have. And if he really wants to get into AI/Machine Learning:
Data Analytics courses --> strong portfolio/resume which leverages past business experience and combines with his courses --> get a data analytics job--> keep learning AI/Machine Learning parallelly --> after 1-2 years or more do an internal switch to AI/Machine Learning within the same company

This is the perfect course for a beginner like you. After doing this short course, decide whether this field is for you or not.

And if Coursera is too costly for him and if he doesn't want to use the financial aid hack, there are plenty of good courses available on Udemy for cheaper rates.

AI requires:
1) computing skills (algorithms, Big O calculations, atleast 2 programming languages - preferably python/R)
2) Math skills - probability, statistics at the minimum
3) Business skills - knowing what problems are worth solving for and what problems are not solvable using AI/ML
4) data engineering skills - sql, big data, conversion of data from OLTP to OLAP, change the data to set up for an AI framework

those are the key areas, it would be helpful if you know atleast 2 areas so you can work on the others. you can pick up basic courses in each and see where your strengths are and go from there.

It depends on what functional area you currently work in. Since you are 30, I am assuming you have 5-7 years of experience already in some area. For example if you are in the financial services industry, AI is used for detecting potential fraudulent transactions and credit risk. If you are in marketing, AI is already heavily used in customizing ad targeting. In customer support AI chatbots are being used extensively, in stock markets, it is being used to pick stocks, in airlines it is being tested for flight path optimization, in airports it is being tested for passenger management. AI is also being used in policing. There are applications in every industry where functional expertise is required before the technical solution comes in.

If you are average at Maths, getting into the techno-functional side can be a challenge. There is a lot of maths involved in AI/ML. If you work for a company that employs data scientists too, then they will take care of those things.

Lastly, remember to read a lot and keep yourself updated with trends. You also need to 'appear' intelligent if you are a domain expert.

(most of) 4 years university degree only help someone to familiarize with coding, nothing more.

You have degree that's enough for Acedamic purposes. Now time for Certifications.

In last 4 months i got three Certifications.(Ofcourse i had experience)

1. RHCSA
2. RedHat Cluster Specialist
3. Redhat Certified Engineer using Ansible

Now i will go for OpenShift (Huge demand) then i will jump to Cybersecurity and i think its enough for next 4-6 years
