Kerala To Set Up 10000 Solar Homes

State Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed said that Kerala proposes to generate 10 MW of electricity from 10,000 roof mounted grid connected solar photovoltanic power system.

Project would be implemented during the financial year 2012-13 with assistance from the Central and State governments. The government would announce the subsidy and other details in the coming state budget,he said

An international conference ‘Solar Homes’ will be organised here to provide a forum to professionals, policy makers, industry, non-governmenal organisation and others to share knowledge and experience on various aspects of solar electric technology, Minister added

Miniaturisation, clustering and decentralisation were the highlights with respect to initiatives proposed variously on the farm front to the shop floor.

HIGH-TECH FARMING

This, according to the Finance Minister, Mr K.M. Mani, was the most practicable way of going about it in a land-scarce and debt-stressed State.

This was evident in the way greenhouses, precision farming, air strips at every district headquarters, seaplanes and waste treatment at source were conceptualised in the Budget.

The State Government would promote high-tech farming, micro-irrigation, use of micro-nutrients and hybrid seeds.

This is expected to bring about a paradigm change in the way farming has been looked at and engaged with as also lift its sagging morale, Mr Mani said.

BIO-PARKS PROPSOED

Bio-parks will be set up to promote rice and coconut crops. Greenhouse-based farming will be popularised across the State.

Greenhouses could be set up at a cost Rs 4.5 lakh over 10 cents of land.

Almost 75 per cent of the amount will come in as State or Central subsidy.

Each panchayat will have three such greenhouses for which Rs 45 crore has been set apart, the Finance Minister said.

FUND FOR ASSEMBLY CONSTITUENCIES

He also announced an asset creation fund for Assembly constituencies in which each MLA will be entitled to take up works of up to Rs 5 crore every year.

This will go to ideally supplement capital investment projects being undertaken in the constituency.

The Budget has set apart Rs 705 crore to fund the proposal.

STUDY ON AIRPORTS

Feasibility studies would be taken up for setting up airports in the backward Idukki and Wayanad districts. .

The Budget has allocated Rs 50 crore for a proposed replacement dam for the aged one at Mullaperiyar.

SOLAR ENERGY INITIATIVE

A solar energy initiative, aiming to generate 1 KW from solar panels set up on roof-tops, will be implemented across 10,000 houses during the year.

INDUSTRIAL ZONE

A petrochemical industrial zone will be established in Kochi.

Kochi Metro Rail Project has been given Rs 150 crore.

Initial phase of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod high-speed rail project will get Rs 50 crore.

Monorail projects for Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram have been assigned Rs 20 crore each and the Vizhinjam international port Rs 224 crore.

I'm not a big fan of Kerala. But they are doing some very commendable things.

Actually the solar home is the only way to go in Kerala, there is simply no place available to put up a large scale solar plant.

Btw, it's compulsory in Bangalore for all new houses to have Solar water heaters installed. The idea is eventually to implement it in all the houses.

Thank you for the Post............But who cares you are a Fan of Kerala or Not...........It is a State in Indian Union and will remain to do so......................

What about those who do not want water heater, solar or otherwise, in the first place?

BTW, does it get so cold in Bangalore so as to make people use hot water? Does it happen so frequently to render it economically feasible?

While I don't think the OP meant anything distasteful in this case, We have seen a rash of posts where members display incredible bigotry towards fellow Indians, especially if you don't agree with their viewpoint. Don't particularly care for chaps who will diss an entire state or an entire people merely because you disagree with their arguments. You can have a view on a particular policy, government or even a particular movement but to simply display boorish behavior & be unnecessarily vituperative towards fellow Indians of a particular group is highly distasteful, to say the least.

Cold enough or maybe we aren't any tough. The idea is not necessarily based on economic feasibility as much as to reduce load. We also have compulsory rain water harvesting in any property that measures 60x40 & above.

Relax i was being appreciative of your state's solar initiative. Using houses as independent power plants to supplement the state power grid is rather awesome. Much better than going nuclear.

We already reduced the the power consumption to some extent by distributing 2 CFL lamps/house (in panchayats) free of cost..But now it seems its not enough as according to our Electricity Minister induction cookers & ACs are sucking in a lot of power now.

This + solar panel + bio gas plant and we can have a 'green' house.

Its very good. Neighboring state governments ought to follow suit rather than blindly rooting for nuclear power.

Actually there could be a nationwide system whereby houses could give power to the grid during daytime and draw from the grid during night. Hope such a system is implemented in Kerala.
