In order to maintain its approved force levels, Indian Navy`s Ship-building plan envisaged addition of two fleet tankers (tanker) by 2008 and 2011 respectively and accordingly, a Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in 2005.

Indian Navy has not awarded a contract for acquisition of a fleet tanker to Italian company even though the steel to be issued by the shipyard in construction did not meet Indian Navy technical specifications.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Prof. Anil Kumar Sahani in Rajya Sabha today.

Hasn't INS Deepak , built by Fincanteri Shipyard , already been inducted in IN ?

Livefist: [UPDATED] Indian Navy's New Fleet Tanker Deepak Commissioned

Yeah...What the article is trying to say is that Fincanteri got the contract despite it didn't met the standards set by IN...

so its saying that the Indian navy did not award the contract , even thought it s requirements were not met?

is it just me ? i do not see any thing wrong done.

.
Even if its true then it doesn't make the tanker inferior its just that instead of 40 years they will retire in 30-35 years of service.

.
Well, atleast they got something to induct, and something is surely better than nothing. And even the steel is of lower quality,it will not affect their servicability a lot atleast in the new build condition. So,no big thing to worry about.
REGARDS..........................

Its a printing mistake. The award went to Fincanteri Shipyard only...

And those 5 years that are lost will mean that the IN will have to spend extra cash and faster to update that ability.
Inferior means that the equipment will not last as expected.. it will serve its penny per pound as expected.. costing the Indian taxpayer..
Why cant these be built in India?? You have the best in steel.. and Cochin can build it.
Weird.

Simple, because our goverment shipyards are currently overloaded with order as over 45 naval vessels are being built by them and many more are awaiting construction. But yeah, our private majors such as L&T or ABG shipyard should have been given the orders.

Fleet tankers are not combat ships. They do not have to face the rigors and punishment that combat ships have to endure. So other than lifespan there is not much concern.....am I right?

My point being.. this issue of "Ghar ki Murghi daal barabar".. the indigenous private defense industry(not DRDO, HAL etc) in India has enormous .. I do not understate this.. enormous potential.

As said before, our shipyards are overburdened(Kochi is busy with AC). We are even outsourcing some jobs to SL.

Guys any pic's of the IN fleet tankers?

i think it is the quality of the shipbuilding steel that did not meet the IN requirements otherwise it is an advanced new generation fleet tanker.
