A Visit To India, A Lollypop To Pakistan

You know what?
On the exact dates when Obama is visiting India..Pakistan should invite Iranian Leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,or Hugo chavez of Venezuela...or the best will be to call Kim Jong Il of North korea. Then make finacial, economic and defence deals with them ;)

Do you like to hammer your own foot.

Like I said, it is more about perception than reality. The reason the Democrats are taking a beating is because of the economy and (Indian) outsourcing has become one of the scapegoats.

The vast majority of the people they hire are Indians, or recent immigrants, who will work for less wages. If anything, they contribute to the perception that Indians are taking away jobs, even the ones that stay in America.

I have been working in the Indian Outsourcing industry for over a decade now and travel there atleast 8-10 times an year. Every time there are elections in USA, there are some noise about govt putting a control on outsourcing and then the whole thing fizzles out. Do you know why? Because it makes economic sense for America to outsource. In a lot of cases, by outsourcing 5-10% of jobs to India and China, companies like GE etc manage to stay profitable against international competition and are able to guard the remaining 90% jobs. A decade later, the whole bogeyman of outsouring is well past its expiry date as a political symbol in America. Folks living in the US know this well...

People are missing the point.

Obama's visit to India is not to please India, but for domestic American politics. He is visiting the two countries that represent a sour note in American domestic policy: the Afghan war and jobs outsourcing. He aims to show solidarity with the troops in Afghanistan, and to get some Indian money pumped into the American economy, i.e. jobs.

If so he should have gone before today not after the elections...the dems are heading for a blood bath in a few hours.

I guess the only guys complaining are the ones who consider US-India-Pakistan relationships as a zero sum game. Just because the US is cosying upto India is someone in the US balancing books by making US - Pak relationship suffer? Whatever frostiness which has crept up in the US-Pak relationships has nothing to do with India.

Like it or not, India is going to play a larger role in this world. Even China will be wanting to setup stronger ties with India, would it be at Pakistan's expense?

u r saying like only india is going to play a 'larger role' and all other nations are like sitting ducks, of what i understand is, india still has enormous issues to deal with, it is no match for what china is, and chinese policies, india has presently nothing big to offer, so wake up from dreamy world, you indians think that india is the end of world for you but the 'reality' is india is not only the one blessed with population, agriculture, and various resources or its strategic points other potentials etc, get over it.... chinese realize that its relationship with pakistan is not fruitless, that why we have strong relationship.

india has crap industries, it will take india decades to become better industrialized, even countries like brazil, turkey, mexico many east european countries are doing better industrially than india, please smell some reality.. indias hype is because of its potential and uncle sam interest to balance china and not because what india is today

Actually..

The US interest in India is because of what India is and will be.

If Pakistan ever does that, I would actually support such a decision.

Only such extreme steps will bring US attention on Pakistan.

Just to give an example - increased Indian interest in buying Iranian gas forced the Americans to fast track the 1-2-3 nuclear deal.

Isn’t your assumption too simple? Why didn’t you recognize that world order is changing, new relations are assuming more importance and power is shifting

Because, if that were so, Obama would have gone to China, Japan or Russia. They are infinitely more important to US foreign interests than India.

So please don't assume all of us are working for under paid wages to get these Jobs.

I wasn't talking about Indian employees, but Indian companies. The pay and the working environment tend to be on the lower end of the scale, which is why they are mostly staffed by Indians or recent immigrants -- people who have fewer options.

A decade later, the whole bogeyman of outsouring is well past its expiry date as a political symbol in America. Folks living in the US know this well...

Agree but, this being election year, the topic is hot.

If so he should have gone before today not after the elections...the dems are heading for a blood bath in a few hours.

He couldn't afford to be missing in action while the Democrats took a beating. His visit was announced well in advance as part of the publicity campaign to give the impression he has a long term plan to get America out of the economic mess.

So, we can say, India is towing the US line of becoming a counter weight to China.

Or may be you guys can change the towing thing to some other strategic partnership or economical benefit jargon.

Rather US using us to counter China,it can be more appropriately put as India using US to keep China at bay.

And as far as US abandoning India is concerned,if at all that happens,we have enough resilience/muscle to carry on without any palpable damages.

india is still very poor, remember this no free lunch, already thousands of farmers in india have commited suicide because of mostly US multinationals forcing poor farmers to buy GM seed.

Also US has protected the Bhopal executives, who through negligence caused death and injury to thousands of indians. The US is a declining power, we have friendship with the rising superpower, who is bankrolling multi billion dollar projects in all fields including nuclear.

Remember the old saying it is better to be America's enemy than her friend.
