A patriotic Iranian prosecuted in America

I always say that blood is thicker then water. Even if I lived 100 years in a different country and had their passport, my allegiance will always be to Iran.

True but then you shouldn't complain if the country sees you as a traitor no? When you sign up for their passport you sign up in allegiance to the country.

Most dual nationality people (especially in Europe) sign up for the passport because of ease of travel. I don't think the UK makes you swear an oath of allegiance (although I could be wrong).

Either way, I am not really clued up on this specific case. But lets say in a hypothetical situation an Iranian with US nationality was spying for Iran in the US, then the US would have a right to arrest him. Even though I personally would be rooting for the Iranian spy. :D

To get UK passport you have to swear allegiance to the Queen.

. .
Well in that case I'd say that a significant part of the UK population doesn't take that seriously.

None the less the oath is taken under God so if there are Muslim Brits they are obligated to follow it at least in theory.

Not just Muslim Brits! A significant portion of UK population (white, brown, black) is Republican. As in they want to replace the Queen with a elected President.

Republicanism in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
they are insignificant percentage overall, not sure their percentage in minority population.
UK is overwhelmingly pro royal, although nobody would want royals to interfer in politics. They want royals as figurehead, nothing more.

.
I don't see the point to that though because the Queen has no power and just minds her own business anyway. :coffee:

It's a matter of fairness for them. They see it as unfair that a Queen/King is chosen not on ability, but just by the privilege of being born in the right family. Also taxpayer money pays for the Royal family's upkeep. Although I guess the tourism money the royal family brings in makes up for that.

They are a minority for sure, but I wouldn't call them insignificant. Go to the list of famous Republicans in the wiki thread, former mayor of London was one amongst countless others. It would also be interesting to see Republican feeling in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Many in those countries view the Queen as an English figurehead and don't accept her as their own.

Yeah but you see the President will still be useless so no point. Also like you said upkeep is offset by tourism so its a zero sum game. :pop:

True, as I said I guess it's just a matter of fairness. Meritocracy and all. But I really don't care one way or the other.

the scots have already declared they want queen as head and even pound as currency,
Wales usually tags along with England, which is overwhelmingly pro royal.

Only significant republicans are in NI, but then its expeced.

The list shows well known people being republican, but they are neither a vociferous group(who can influence political agenda) nor have any significant support in masses.
The masses are enamoured by royalty, cant have enough of it..

Yeah royalty is loved by tabloids and housewives and such. SNP said if Scotland gets independence they would keep the Queen, but I would like to see a survey done of both Wales and Scotland to see what people there think. There is a strong independence streak going on in these countries right now. The upsurge of the SNP just goes to show that.

@Shahin Vatani : you sure you lived in UK and not some other country. You seem to get your info from wiki or internet, anybody who lives in uk for more than a year will know UK politics.
