If we truly act upon Islam, we can easily protect ourselves from all the propaganda. If we just follow Quran and Hadeeth...never trust rumours spread by unknown or media outlets with a history of lying and disseminating the false propaganda. Also never forward any news without confirmation. Also govt should punish any media house, journalist or organisation that spreads disinformation without a justification.

A modern warfare tool - The lies & deceptive tactics of Media/Journalists
newspapers-in-pakistan.jpg

I was going through news streams by different media houses and journalists on social media and reading directly from sources. Spent almost 1 hour to read real issue, development or information related to Pakistan's progress in different matters especially Economy or Infrastructure Development, new or reformed strategies, internal & external security threats and an effective strategy of Pakistan's foreign diplomacy. Indeed, newly elected government has just formed a team and needs its due time to understand issues related to national interests from Government point of view as compare to being opposition. This period of understanding matters & forming an effective team is locally called "Honeymoon" time frame. So, keeping in view all the possibilities, I wanted to see if I can read about policy announcements & portfolio of team members that are going to lead this country along newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan.

After a lot of browsing & reading into headlines or even tweets I didn't find much about matters of national interest except for mudslinging, tantrums & provocations by media over non-issues or one can say petty issues/less valued in these times to discuss. We all are aware as what are the hot topics for media houses nowadays so I started to note the pattern of news, interests of certain media persons & language being used to discuss even it was not a worth debating matter.

Finally, I observed that matters which needs proper projection or coverage are being ignored which appeared to be a deliberate attempt in presence of these so-called media houses. Beside journalists, noticed young guns/youth full of passion, wants to serve nation in their respective domain or authority but unfortunately; most of patriots were down the level of ethics or to say, a proper way to counter lies, propaganda & disinformation.

Digging it for the root cause, I observed that most of Pakistanis were falling for the media trap being provoked and were responding in kind/inappropriately and totally being out of track to highlight any achievements/progress to silence ill wishers. Gone through many accounts and posts of several social media mediums, observed that mostly are discussing media/journalists interests either in favour or opposing but, couldn't understand the real agenda behind all that media/journalists frenzy, therefore, to play at-least my part, a thought came to my mind that,

Are you interested to understand that how Media Mafia works, influence or sabotage any society? Be free from any thoughts in mind, take a deep breath and be sure you want to learn, erase existing information then calmly observe/analyze every single Pakistan journalist & their interests.

Media is one of the best tools in modern warfare to manipulate & adopts deceptive strategy in a sense which appears to be nation friendly. Media Tycoons are hired guns, works for sponsor/employer & have no interest for Motherland at all. Current media aim is not about truth.

Media is a legalized medium to interfere into state matters & influences for a hostile agenda. The strategy is designed in a way which will be based upon an opinion, contrary to the ground reality/facts but still, will be propagated as a news under freedom of expression. Media/Journalists firstly dig into wrong doings of corrupt people/politicos/ officials, obtain details, blackmails & in return get paid heavily and then promotes the same corrupt lot. Misuses the power of freedom of expression & defame people/ institutes fighting against corruption. The corrupt Journalists are no less than terrorists with guns. It wouldn't be wrong to call such lot "Media Terrorists" that works for hostile/ enemies in lieu of personal gains/money against the interests of State while sabotaging society & creating chaos/rift among people.

In our case, journalism is mostly about to hire a loud speaker to keep repeating the same guided agenda, regardless of reality, by twisting facts merely to create a confusion so that masses couldn't differentiate between truth or lies. Read Mir Shakeel (Geo) about Media Command.

In view of last few years, where Pakistan had 2 democratic governments back to back; Media has been playing its role to project Democracy only while on other hand democratically elected leaders did what they were supposed to and given power for. Media/journalists ran campaigns for respective masters/employers and secured a victory based upon stolen mandate. Masses been celebrating Democracy while looters kept plundering treasury/country which finally ended into current state of sky high debits, massive unemployment, lack of infrastructures & a chaos of mismanagement. This Media, did not investigate or fulfill its responsibility at all to bring truth forthwith because, journalists were working for salary/money/employer.

After lot of struggle & hard work, nation having hope that not just we will get rid of corruption but also economy will be strengthen & Pakistan will rise again by zeroing debit. Approach of independent policy, sovereignty, strong economy & progress is not what our enemies want. Not the first time that hostile forces are utilizing Media against Pakistan however, previously had incompetent/puppet/hired politico, therefore, been targeting institutes only. As for the 1st time, Civilian Government & Institutes seems to be well aligned and committed to deal with available challenges, therefore, lies based mass propaganda is being initiated through wide coverage.

Newly elected Government sworn in & was busy selecting team to work for Pakistan only but then almost 90% media, loyal to foreign masters & two ex-ruling parties, went into frenzy mod; started manipulation/ projecting petty/non-issues to malign & to prove as Pakistan cannot progress as such. Hostile forces/foreign employers of people like Zardari/Nawaz/corrupt politicos; seen development & failing of anti-Pakistan schemes contrary to expected results; now paid/directed Media agents to sabotage further progress & create an atmosphere of uncertainty by disinformation.

Notably, since few days petty issue such as Heli use for PM or couple of mismanagement matters (though none proved true) are intentionally being projected 24/7 by 90% of corrupt media/journalists instead of reporting State's foreign policy development & anti-corruption progress. Austerity announced by newly elected Government, seems to be one of strategies to support worsened economy & reject status quo/VIP culture especially but feudal plagued Media launches campaign to taunt only Austerity while censoring broader picture intentionally to derail success progress. We must understand the difference between Security escort & VIP Protocol. Austerity is done by cutting unnecessary expenses however, State Officials can't be compromised in security. Corrupt Media tantrum drive in this regard, is a provoking attempt to compromise/risk security.

In view of reformed/new strategy, Pakistan is emerging as a strong state, hence, developments in respect of matters of national interests & positive image; are deliberately concealed/ignored under specific warfare agenda by these media houses through misleading & disinformation coverage. The continuous media coverage of non-issues by way of fabricating the facts & creating baseless stories; is all about infecting/ corrupt the naive/unaware minds or to target people with less means of information. It is also about baiting youth, provoke & divert their focus. In this day & age, Social Media is one of the mediums that people can use to fight against disinformation, tell the truth & expose misleading propaganda of corrupt media houses. However, it is necessary to not to get diverted by provocative attempts of media trolls over petty issues. You lose your worth when one reacts to an abuse in kind or by an approach of unethical & in-appropriate way of arguments/discussion. You must adopt the strategy of proper discussion by countering the lies with fact & present your opinion with manners & respect. Don't be carried away as Hostiles wants you to waste energy in less valued issues.

Pakistan achieving as desired & rising after a lot of sacrifices, dedication & hard work of people so don't miss the opportunity to further your progress, affirm your resolve towards betterment & rise as a strong nation. Remember, our enemies are not happy at the moment, hence, stand united. We have many sources to the truth & ground reality, therefore, let's not fully depend upon Media Houses/Journalists and reveal the facts to the world in appropriate manners. Share every development and support every progress. Add or share your valuable opinions, observations and findings that we all have a responsibility & duty to serve our Motherland.

Very good piece. Media has become a fifth column of the state and its not good for a countries progress - must reform and educate media .

An agency which track and expose media propaganda: https://medium.com/dfrlab

@The Eagle

Pakistan might need something similar. However, Pakistan needs to establish a climate of scrutiny and accountability first.

Actually, Pakistan did not play on par with foreign competitors. It is true that we did lack an agency as such to keep a check for in-depth evaluation and counter any possible hostile build-up. Undoubtedly, media tycoons have turned into influential force that mostly manipulate any outcome in favour of nation, if it doesn't agree per sponsor.

Now coming to the mess in account of Stock Exchange crashing to the bottom and then rise of Dollar against Rupee. Even though, it is a subject of economy that I am not good at calculations as such but still, how the so-called investigative journalists and dedicated teams concealed the root cause of such down-slide; is notable.

A commoner even understands that Stock Exchange cannot crash in a manner as such at overnight and value of money results based upon the economic figures in past. As usual, media teams played their best into the hands of masters and totally ignored the fact as how this could happen. As per my understanding for which, I can be wrong too, as soon as Government Institutes started accountability process, started to track Tax Evaders, started to investigate wealth beyond means or resources & started to apprehend economic hitmen at any level then suddenly Stock Exchange mafia pulled out. Dollar vanished from market which resulted in less value of Rupee. As stated above, the goal is not to discuss economic reforms or counters but here we can see that how specific mafia works in coordination with different arms of propaganda on behest of hostile.

In broader prospect, there are teams that works in close coordination like from media to economic players, then from political thugs to low level manipulators living among public, then from propagandist which fuels different kind of divides to the people that sparks feud & anger among people to target State in the end. The State, yes this is the only target to hit. Whether ruling party is PTI or not; I must repeat, the state remains the main target whereby hostile elements will shoot over the shoulder of politics.

Just a day ago, Government decided to investigate mismanagement at Ministry of Information whereby ex-Minister namely Maryam Aurangzeb allegedly spent millions to empower PMLN political social media team over the expense of exchequer money. Now, see all the drama, sabotage & propaganda through media in previous years especially targeting State Institutes that too upon the expense of Public Money. As said before, Media is the tool to further any agenda in a manner as desired and this is the same tool which works as a loud speaker.

So, most of media houses especially Journalists did not even consider a moment to investigate about real problem of unfortunate inflation nor did anyone reveals as why are we facing current situation. These highly paid manipulators keep concealing or deliberately avoids to share details as such which will help populace to know the real culprits behind all the misery because; most of them journalists are meant to earn and keep pleasing certain employers. How media tycoons been threatening Institutes in different wording and styles; is all on record.

This is all the part of hybrid warfare waged upon state to demean & demoralize any progress which will benefit the nation at large. These media houses will call it a news till any leak helps to harm National Security and will believe in Journalism as such but on other hand, whenever called upon to differentiate between Journalism & espionage then will start to cry high and play victim card. The same media houses will play with the help of corrupt elements within the Government ranks and as currently Institutes are gearing up to deal the cancer as such; same media houses are trying to demean any effort as such to minimize the possibility of justice being served to the culprits. If anyone having a thought that why would Media will support corrupt elements then must remember that corrupt elements cannot live without propaganda or influential media houses and vice versa. Both elements works closely to pursue specific agenda as & when required.

Few among the journalists will support ethnic groups and project them as a sort of mere political party but these elements will be eyeing a later damage when it extends it roots among public. For example, the Achakzai treason & PTM's hateful business. Most of journalist's interests lies abroad and their love of luxuries is not hidden so they deliberately play deaf & dumb contrary to the facts & truth to be told. The hybrid warfare manipulation works in a manner by creating a deceptive cover of highly harmful matters through manners such as political differences or social reforms. Such kind of covers are utilized initially so public without much information in this regard start to believe whatever being propagated through different means of communications and as the hostile agenda gains momentum, they starts to launch next level of anti State activities with aggressive approach & hateful campaigns.

Media & Journalists are part of the same hybrid warfare that works along different groups including corrupt officials, political thugs, ethnic groups, extremists including either religious or liberals, NGOs & other elements. These pawns are utilized through different sources in different times but above all, coverage is being provided by Media mediums to corrupt society at first.

Pakistan is in dire need of a mechanism to keep check & balance as well as a close watch over activities of people attached to the media at large. As the game is designed on complex web but it is not hard to track down connected infections running malicious campaigns against State. Political differences aside; State will have to act to get rid of hostile elements. Currently, most of opposition political elements have opted a way appearing to be political but deep down it is highest threat to the state which is designed to sabotage society, create unrest & uncertainty and make people believe of less progress. Most of the fake news are shared and these media houses walks freely in the name of Personal Opinion.

We have recent example of Cyril of Dawn whose article totally misrepresented the facts and was an attempt to malign State Institutes with the help of Nawaz Sharif and Company. Similar sabotage was done in past by Hussain Haqqani being supported by Asif Zardari against State. Then-after, despite having thousands of pro-claimed investigative journalists & champions of journalism, none date to tell the truth as what really happened down there. In fact, truth will help state at large but here, personal gains & cheques were more important over National Interests. Therefore, one should not expect much of truth or beneficial report or investigative journalism from current lot of Journos nor to help them spread their designed propaganda.

Interesting theory, but one that fails basic tests of economics, given the present payments imbalance. The value of the PKR, the stock market, and inflation are all related issues arising from that basic problem, more than anything else. Pure and simple economics.

Understanding the news media

Oxbridge Society and its co-ordinator Irshad Ullah-Khan were more than happy by Moeed Hassan Pirzada’s lecture in Islamabad last week, where he gave an overview of Pakistan’s media situation, past, present and future. It was good to get some basics sorted out, a description and facts and issues presented, so that people who are not in the media themselves, can have a better background to consider and analyse news and issues. Often nowadays, especially in fields where everyone somehow feels it is possible to have an opinion, we talk about issues without knowing the basics. In a recent column, I drew attention to some social scientists, with scant media knowledge, yet they spoke as if they knew it all. The conferences were meant to be scientific, hence researchers felt they could talk, even to talk down on media practitioners, including that journalist enter the profession by fault. The meetings were about fake news, but to say and write something without checking the facts and issues beforehand is also presenting fake news; it is an arrogance of people in academic and other high posts. We automatically listen to such people because we think they are more neutral and knowledgeable than others.

When Pirzada spoke at Oxbridge last week, he presented facts and issues in an engaging way, as several participants told me afterwards; well, he was not entirely academic and humble, of course not, that one wouldn’t expect from any popular TV anchor! His CV indicates that he has local and British education and experience in media and political analysis in both countries and he has travelled widely and interviewed politicians in many foreign lands – and he has great mastery of the ‘Queen’s English’. His substantive knowledge was what I and the other participants enjoyed – and when he exaggerated, and spoke about things where he had less expertise, he did that without things becoming ‘fake news’.

I should hasten to add that I am using Pirzada more as an example rather than evaluating his specific presentation, including all the tricky questions he handled so well.

He told us that Pakistan now has about one hundred TV channels, but that there was little direct profit in that industry. He was also quite critical to PTV and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, National History and Literary Heritage, as the full name is. He suggested that the ministry has little policy thinking to offer, and there seems to be competence competition with PTV. He criticised the local channels for not being able to cover news countrywide in depth, or at all. He even suggested that he would turn on BBC to get details of major events in Pakistan. I don’t think he said much about the role of the radio, which again is a growing medium in Europe nowadays; and I he could have said more about daily newspapers, in English, Urdu, and vernaculars. I am of the opinion that the press generally has more professional newsmen and women than the TV channels; journalists should rather begin their career in print media and then ‘graduate’ to electronic media, what was more common in the past. But maybe I am outdated, not quite having realized that TV is today the focal medium for the young journalists and talkers?

At the other conferences I above mentioned I had attended recently, there was less basic information given of the kind that Pirzada gave us, especially about TV. Historically, I thought Pirzada could have dwelt more on the fact that it was in Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s time as Pakistan’s president that the media were let loose and the role of the PTV monopoly ended. I believe Musharraf actually believed in the importance of liberalization of the media as a positive factor for people’s participation in development. What we didn’t foresee, was the mushrooming of TV channels with focus on talk shows. (When I, 25 years ago, wrote a policy paper for an African country, with a local expert, we didn’t imagine this development.)

It is an America style for TV channels to have their own people talk about what the newsmakers say and do, even before they have finished speaking, interpreting and twisting before the event is over. Through that, the media personalities become almost as important as newsmakers and events. The right wing ‘Fox News’ in America is certainly good and quite extreme at this. It seems that their ideal is not to be neutral, objective and educational; it seems that opinions and hidden agendas rule. To some extent, such TV channels almost resemble social media with all their fake and tilted information, and many TV channels have today borrowed some of this way of operating.

In our time and in future, in Pakistan, I believe we would have done better with three or five TV channels. The same way as we have a limited numbers of English and Urdu dailies, we can live well with less than a hundred TV channels. In future, perhaps they can join hands, group and become strong in reporting and investigating news, and they may even be financially strong enough to play the role of the ‘forth estate’, independent, trusted and admired by all. Today, newspapers still have some of this role, but alas, fewer people, indeed few young people, read printed newspapers. And if they do, they look them up on the smart phone, but then is becomes quite scattered and scanty; many also read social media messages rather than the old-fashioned, mainstream and real media.

When Pirzada in his lecture was critical to the role of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and PTV, we can quickly agree that he had some points and that a new national media framework and policies are needed. That mainly means new regulations! However, it will not be easy to go from the free and liberal situation of today, yes, messy, fuzzy and unproductive, and ‘back’ to a world of more regulations. Yet, I believe it will have to come. I believe that the government needs to support a few main TV channels, even have ownership of them with the private sector. The channels must, however, be run independently in the style of public broadcasting, what we used to call the ‘BBC model’. Also, newspapers and print media need to be given a better environment and roles and regulations suitable to our time and the future. It is essential that the professional, mainstream media are the main sources of information, not the social media. But they can also inform the mainstream media about news and issues. The strength of real news media is that they have gatekeepers and professional journalists and editors. There is great potential for the future of the real, professional media – and it is time that all countries, including Pakistan, discuss and define the roles and functions of the media in a comprehensive and firm way. Technology has given us new tools, but we also have old experience; together the world will be better.

Of course no updates. Such outlandish claims and conspiracy theories are usually a hit-and-run job, presented without any proof and never verified by any meaningful results.

But the Information Minister back then is now Science & Technology Minister. The same guy who actually then went on to slap journalists ironically

In your opinion, who are the top 10 anti-state culprits ("activists," bloggers, journalists, etc.) that are playing into the hands of hostile intelligence?

Its not a simple question now is it?

Its very hard to determine in terms of infowars as one can argue its a legit game since media has a free hand as promised by the dictator Musharraf but financial corruption can be easily tracked. Going after the people who have made the most gains in terms of ill gotten wealth will only be a start.
