When I speak to people I know what perception they hold about India. I can assure you, it isn't very good. Modi who is a nationalist has deteriorated the image of India. India is equated with violence and rape towards women. That is the first thing you will hear from most Westerners. India is also eqauted with oppressing its minorities. The caste system is something India is renowned all over the world. The Western people are very well informed about India.

India isn't even secular nor democratic. Hindu nationalists are opposed to outside influence and are very conservative minded. India is rather a sham democracy. It claims to be the latest democracy, yet the state of its minorities is well know.

The Hindu nationalists existed in India well before Independence, and they were there for the last 70 years. Ironically they came to power only twice that too after a long period of waiting. Why do you think they took so long ?? Just because we are a pure secular democracy. That is why even though prominently Hindu (above 80%) Hindu nationalist parties were struggling to come to power. And please don't be under an impression that NDA/BJP will rule for ever, if they don't deliver they will also have same fate as UPA.

Tell me one country on earth where rape doesn't happen ?? It happens everywhere in USA, UK, Europe, Africa, Asia everywhere. Does that mean it is the incompetence of the respective countries ?? Then Netherlands is also very incompetent while providing security for their women. :-(
