Bismil is a district of Diyarbakır Province of Turkey was named after fierce freedom fighter Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil. Bismil was one of the founder members of the revolutionary organisation Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). As well as being a freedom fighter, he was also a patriotic poet and wrote in Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil.
In order to rehabitat the immigrated people coming together around Konya in 1936, the sixth district of Diyarbakir was established and named as Bismil to commemorate a fierce freedom fighter and a patriotic poet of India Pt.Ram Prasad Bismil by the Turkish army officer, revolutionary statesman, writer, and the first President of Turkey Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha alias Kemal Ataturk who is popularly known as founder of the Republic of Turkey. Ram Prasad Bismil had written an article in the Hindi magazine Prabha about him under the title Vijayee Kemal Pasha i.e. Victorious Kemal Pasha and later on an appraisal in his autobiography. The province Diyarbakir, where this district is situated, means in English the rebellion's region.

Some of these stories are heart warming. Thanks for sharing.
Indian revolutionaries had close relationships with Turkey before independence. Channel for these relations was Turkish embassy in Kabul. There is also another different story -
In 1924 revolutionary named Teja Singh Sutantar was sent to Turkey by Ghadar Party to attain military knowledge. Sutantar (means who is free) got Turkish citizenship & joined the turkish military academy in Constantinople through the instrumentality of Maulvi Obaid Ullah Sindhi of Deoband School & who was once a Home Minister in the triple coalition exile government of India in Kabul in 1915. That government in exile was supported by Turkish government. Teja Singh Sutantar graduated from academy in first class and recieved commission of officer in Turkish Army with speciality in guerilla warfare. But he resigned from job to train the Ghadar Party ranks in California,Panama,Argentina & Brazil. Later he successfully returned to British India through sea as British CID was searching him in NWFP & other areas near Afghan border because they were thinking Sutantar was dropped through parachute somewhere in these areas by soviet plane. After Independence Sutantar remained underground due to his left wing activities for 13 years till 1962 but after that he was elected as MP from Punjab.

Today is birth anniversary of Ram Prasad Bismil. He was born on 11 June 1897 in Shahjahanpur, United Province, British India. His most famous poem is -
"Sarfroshi ki tammana abb hamare dil mein hai..
Dekhna hai zor kitna baju-e katil mein hai..."
A great salute to this true legend.

wonderful.. i didn't know of this.

while revolutionaries from other cultures ( like lenin, che guevara ) have had roads and other artifacts named after them, it has been rare for south asian revolutionaries... this is a proud moment, but it is also saddening that this fact was not known for so long.

it must be indeed rare for a socialist and the deoband mullah school to collaborate.

Correction: British Indian revolutionaries.

They have nothing to do with the current day india, which has just borrowed another name.

but these revolutionaries had nothing to do with partition politics... they fought for a united india... therefore it is right to call them "indian".

oh, a district's name after an Indian terrorist. :coffee:

huzoor, look above answer.

So,the idea of a free Indian continent came from us,@levina Teach?:azn:
