A big step in India's Rafale jet deal with France

This much had been known even before the MMRCA selection process began - that the winner would supply 18 off the shelf in flyaway condition, and 108 would be built in India.

The news here is that work share agreement has been reached for the 108 to be manufactured in India, about the amount of technology transferred, and the degree of in house manufaacture achived.

You misunderstood the significance of the news.

HAL is only at 70% for the Sukhois at the present. The ability of HAL to absorb technology is disappointing.

I wonder if this deal will ever be signed. Its taken so long. the IAF asked for mirages after Kargil. 15 years later and nothing to show for it.

Only if there is partiality in MMrca tender procedure while selecting Rafale But this ain,t going too happen because Iaf is too committed this deal and they are the one who selected Rafale in first place the present hindrance is budget constrains well it will solve in next accounting years which starting from End of this month :-):-):-):-)

Is Indian fiscal year from April to March? In other parts of the world it is usually July to June.

Why would they? In the wake of the Kilo disaster sand their attacks on Antony for being slow and incompetent in signing deals, now more then ever they'll want to show they can be quick and efficient in the defence arena and the Rafale deal will grab headlines. Especially considering the Rafale is set to replace most of the MIG-21s in service- they can claim they are responsible for getting the "flying coffins" out of service and thus care about the servicemen. If they cancel the deal there will be a huge $hitstorm and they will e guilty of the very things they are attacking the current GoI/Def Min for.

On the other hand, they also want to boost the local industry and may just opt to invest the money in LCA instead of Rafale, the rest of the resources can be applied to further development of LCA + investment in PAK-FA.

Indian official calendar is the Shalivahana era Hindu Saka Calendar which starts with the month of Chaitra (23 march) and ends with the month of Phalgula.

When the British took over India they too started using the traditional Hindu fiscal year to mark their own fiscal year for practical reasons. The however adjusted the year to start from 1st April and that practice has continued.

Another reason is that the british followed the old ecclesiastical calander which started from 25th march and when they converted to Greogorian calander most business were unwilling to loose out on the rent collection for the lost days, hence a new law was passed that extended the start date to 6th April.

That is why till day most ex-British colonies still have 1st April as the start of their Fiscal year.

eg. India, Briain, Canada, Hong kong, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand etc ...

Nope, no one could make the case the LCA is a superior machine to the Rafale. If you're taking about investment and industry- the Rafale deal with ToT and a 50% offset clause is the best thing the rather backward Indian aviation industry could have happen to it, this is, in part, what the MMRCA deal has been about since the beginning and why the costs are so high.

Not to mention from a delivery POV there's no way the LCA's production could be ramped up to meet the needs for the MIG-21/27 replacement by 2017/19.

No future govt is going to challenge or disrupt the Rafale buy, there just isn't enough to justify its cancellation and when you have the IAF making its position clear- it needs the Rafale yesterday then the GoI (whomever they may be) cannot ignore this..

The Rafale deal will be signed in 2014, I am 100% confident of this.

Then why is pakistan so worried.

Why would Pakistan be worried? If India invades Pakistan, guess what, economic sanction just like with Ukraine. Indian economy would collapse and Indian troops would have to withdraw from Pakistan. :victory: Plus, JF-17 is just as advanced as Rafale, if not more. Don't forget, JF-17 is the world's first fighter jet that has DSI. :yu:

useless.better to get 8 lca for price of 1 rafale and invest in good aam or sam and better radar tracking, coordination using awacs etc.any thoughts?

How have you got the 8-1 unit cost figure? That's waaay off maybe 3-4 but not 8!

5 i guess

LCA - $25-30 million
Rafale - $130 million

but foolish argument............

LCA is not Rafale & Rafale isn't LCA................

Do we buy 30 bicyles when we have to buy a bike??

@WebMaster, how is this guy still allowed to run around with 2 Canadian flags? I have brought him to your attention multiple times. Change one of his flags to a Pakistani one or ban him for false flagging.

The unit costs on offer to the IAF for both of these are STILL not known not set in stone. And if anyone was trying to make a case (however foolish it might be) for the LCA to be ordered in greater numbers over the Rafale they would surely be referring to an increase in MK.2 orders and we know even less about how much the MK.2 will cost but can speculate it will be quite a bit more than the $25-30 million figure for the MK.1.

Ya i knw its foolish but still doesnt make sense to buy a few rafales which is 4+ gen for huge amount to replace mig 21,when the time it is inducted ,all around airforces wl be using 5 gen planes.so it seems more sensible to get LCA as stopgap and invest heavily on 5gen plane whether its indegenous or foreign made.

There's so much wrong in this post I'll tackle it point by point:

when the time it is inducted ,all around airforces wl be using 5 gen planes.
By 2017 ALL AFs in the world will be using 5th gen planes will they? Please point them out to me.... The US obviously (F-22 and F-35) and a few tier one JSF partner nations will be operating a limited amount of the F-35.

so it seems more sensible to get LCA as stopgap

You know the idea of a "stop gap" is immediate delivery/results?! The LCA's first SQD will only be formed later this year, it will only be an operational SQD by late 2016 at the EARLIEST, the MK.2 LCA (what the IAF really wants) is still yet to take to the skies and won't beat the Rafale into IAF service. Ordering more LCAs is hardly the "sensible" thing to do considering the IAF has desperately sought the MiG-21s/27s replacement for over a decade now and have said they will all be gone by 2017-19. The Rafale will help address the SQD number issues sooner than the LCA will.

invest heavily on 5gen plane whether its indegenous or foreign made.

$30BN on the FGFA isn't investing heavily?

I'd say do some research first, before you join the hordes of those ignorant to defence matters who float ideas like "replace the MMRCA with the LCA".
