79% of Turkish population is religious, survey shows: check for others

Erdogan's politics are actually making people turn on religion. A real politician doesn't have to use religion as a card. People who do are usually tricking the people and running away with filled pockets from the national treasury. Religion is a private matter.
Islam is not private matter and Erodgan policies are doing nothing

I know enough about him to know that he tried to wipe off the Turkish identity. Changing the script of Turkish language, completely cutting off Islamic roots in Turkish culture.
BTW, before you go off on a rant, being Anti-Ataturk does not mean I am anti-turkey. I love Turkish people.
You really dont know anything about Ataturk's reforms he did not wiped out Turkish identity and language its opposite he restored it , what he wiped out was Ottoman identity and language.

i hope it reaches 0% in India, the less superstitious people are...the better country is...

Just look at China go, one can obviously get a lot more done once not clouded by false beliefs.

but spirituality is not a bad thing and not alien to Islam or other faiths, and it's not incompatible with progress.

it's the fundamentalists we must be wary off.

Being religious in Turkey could mean entirely different from lets say being religious in Pakistan.
I don't think the secular credentials of Turkey are under any threat....
People keep electing Erdogan because of the strong economy like even i would vote for Nawaz Sharif if he gets the growth rate to above 7 % even though personally i despise him !

I completely agree with you. Religions are inflexible and clouds people's judgement and many times gives way to irrationality.
Also it is used as a tool by politicians when they have no real work to show or talk about.
Spirituality on the other hand is personal and flexible enough. Although making decisions based on superstitious beliefs should be avoided.

Commitment to Islam | Pew Research Center's Religion & Public Life Project

Salat, or prayer, is the most parameter to see in term of religiosity as a Muslim.

2012 survey

Apparently, some of our Pakistani friends here cannot let go their romantic thoughts towards the Ottoman Empire which, along with ignorance and misinformation, usually leads to being anti Atatürk and anti secularism. Of course you don't have to love him, you don't have to agree with him, but when you undermine our values and wish for a counter revolution in Turkey, then you are indeed being anti-Turkey as well.

Yes, this is an open forum and all but it might be better at some cases to keep your uneducated and subjective thoughts on a founder of a country to yourself.

I want to share this survey which could give a better and more accurate idea about the Turks and Turkey to some of you:

Full article: More secular, green Turkey wanted: Poll - LOCAL

An overwhelming majority of Turkish people want secularism to be included in the country’s new charter, a recent survey conducted by KONDA for the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) has revealed.

Almost 90 percent of survey participants said the country should be defined as secular in the new Constitution. Some 50.6 percent said the definition of secularism should be kept as it is, and 40.7 percent said secularism should be “redefined to keep an equal distance from all religions.”

Secularism demanded

Only 8.7 percent of the participants said the new charter should not include secularism, with 18.9 percent of the participants defining themselves as “Islamists” when asked about their political orientation.

The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 2,699 people of various ages and social groups across 29 provinces on Sept. 22 and 23.

The new Constitution should also be in line with the principles of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, a majority of those surveyed said. Some 82 percent agreed that the charter must include “Atatürk’s principles and revolutions and Atatürk nationalism,” as it currently does.

Just had a religious discussion/contradiction with 2 of my Turkish friends when we gathered on Easter day amongst friends.2 hours later while we were almost arguing on it ,it occured to us that we're having a totally hypocritical discussion because we were doing it while having industrial quantities of whisky and beer between us-me on Easter day,them....well...being muslims.

When you watch Turkish tv series you would think these people have no believes.

Every Turk I have met has been a "muslim" yet goes out drinking, picking up women, taking drugs etc haha.

As usual though these are stats that show one thing, belief in gods is rampant in nations when you as a person are probably suffering from oppression, poverty, poor economy etc etc and when those things are reversed you tend to get a much lower level of religion, even claiming the UK is over 30% religion is hilarious, immigrants yeah most of them but apart from that its probably 1% of the native inhabitants who actually attend any place of worship.
