I am eating LOTS of them these days (after Iftar off course ) and it is one of those things where the dirtier you get the more fun it is

Pakistani mangoes can only be imported into the U.S. under an approved treatment and inspection regimen: link.

Best not to try carrying one or two in for your personal enjoyment. Pre-9/11 I saw one hapless chap at an airport surrounded by police and dogs. His briefcase was full of fruit. I'm pretty sure they destroyed both the fruit and the briefcase. Another time I witnessed one of my relatives detained in customs because of the apple in his pocket. He was not allowed to leave until he consumed some and threw the rest away.

I have privileged access to cross the border, and, despite my love of mangoes, I will never jeopardize it by violating the restrictions on carrying forbidden fruit. Besides, the ban just makes it so much sweeter to eat on the other side.

USA provided the necessary facilities for Pakistan to meet the FDA requirements to export its mangoes, but it the best Pakistani tradition, they destroyed the whole program with their incompetence. Pity!

There was a problem related to Melaybug. It happened with Indian crop and they got banned for a few years, the immediate next year we faced the same issue and got banned. The ban was to end this year (2016) and the tests were cleared. We will again start seeing exports to Canada, US and EU from Pakistan.

I hope that Pakistanis mangoes go on to conquer the market if the quality control needed for reliable exports is ensured.
