6 in 10 Pakistanis support crackdown on terror outfits: Gallup poll

Posted by admin in World News

Washington, Dec.18 (ANI): A majority of people in Pakistan support the government on the issue of eradication of home grown terror outfits.

Sixty percent of Pakistani nationals are of the view that the government should take a tougher approach to rid the country of terrorist activities, a new Gallup poll has said.

The survey shows substantial support across Pakistan for a tougher stance against terrorist activities, most visibly in Punjab.

Nearly half of the population in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Balochistan think that the government should take a tougher stance on ridding Pakistan of terrorist activities.

Militants of al Qaeda, Taliban and other terror groups have been creating trouble in NWFP and Balochistan for long now.

Many people are of the view that increasing terror-related violence in Pakistan this year is due to the new government’’s resolve to eliminate terrorism at all costs.

However, the poll also said that not all are pacified with the efforts of the government on the issue. Only 30 percent think that the government is doing enough in this regard.

Confidence of a normal Pakistani in their local police has also dropped precipitously.

“Rising violence and the government’’s perceived ineffectiveness to quell it may be the impetus behind the erosion in Pakistanis” general feelings of personal security, the Daily Times the poll, as saying.

The percentage of Pakistanis saying they feel safe walking alone at night in the areas where they live has dropped measurably within the past year, from 50 percent in June 2007 to 41 percent in October 2008, the poll added.

Pakistanis” confidence in their police has dropped 11 percentage points from 42 percent in 2007 and is the lowest Gallup has measured to date. (A)

Gallup's conclusion based on survey results:
Bottom Line

Gallup's recent poll in Pakistan suggests that serious action against militants within Pakistan appears to have many citizens' support. This internal mandate to fight terrorism, rather than external pressure, may do more to secure the buy-in of the Pakistani people and enable the new civilian government to make good on its promises to eradicate terrorists inside Pakistan.
The most obvious point to ponder is, why do we have 13 percent of Pakistanis suggesting that the government should not act against terrorism?

Some interesting regional deviations Baluchistan vs NWFP vs Punjab in this survey.

Lower support in Baluchistan could have something to do with 'terrorism' in Baluchistan primarily being associated with the seperatist groups and the Sardar's. But looking at the results above, it also appears that a huge number of people in both NWFP and Baluchistan refused to answer the question - fear and influence of militants and Sardar's perhaps?

NWFP in fact has the lowest percentage of respondents answering with an outright 'no' to more action against terrorism, which strengthens my suspicion that those who abstained may have done so out of fear, especially when you add in the lower confidence in law enforcement results.

They're not fearful. They really don't know is my belief.

Many people in Pakistan havent come to a conclusion what is good for them.

If you ask an illiterate person, which government is good for you. He wouldn't know. Same with these polls. Looks to be following more the literacy rates in each province.

Actually it says 4/10 people support terrorists in Pakistan. Western media has been portraying Pakistan like this for some time now.

Its not 4 in 10. 3.7 out of 10 people refused to comment or weren't sure. 1.3 out of 10 supported.

I dont know how any one can doubt Pakistan's intentions against these groups. We've had it! We're being killed more than anyone else!

No - Gallup's conclusion does not look at the glass as four-tenths empty. Read their conclusion based on the survey again, in addition to what Asim pointed out.
