5 Things You May Not Know About China's Energy Infrastructure

Jul 10, 2014 Deming Xiao

For China to meet its increasing demand for energy due to industrial expansion and urban population growth,it will need to fully modernise its energy infrastructure. This investment is expected to total $600 billion over the next decade.

This aggressive investment has already begun, with an emphasis placed on renewable energy. This fits with China’s efforts, as the world’s biggest carbon emitter, to reduce carbon emissions. Due to the nature of such a large undertaking, which must meet the energy demands of 1.4 billion people and a territory stretching 9.3 million square kilometres, China is hitting many records in the scale involved in the development of it energy infrastructure.

1. The government plans to develop 27 gigawatts of wind power capacity in 2015

Starting in 2011, China's National Energy Administration has approved, in four instalments, wind projects totalling more than 100GW in generating capacity; the equivalent of the UK electrical grid

2. China's largest LNG project supplies an estimated 2 million cubic meters of LNG per day and 481,100 tons annually

The HuaQi Ansai facility, which was inaugurated in August 2012, coverts Ansai's rich natural gas resources to LNG before the gas is transported over long distances.

3. By 2020, China plans to expand its LNG carrier fleet to 80 or more vessels

Currently, China has a LNG carrier fleet of 10 vessels and by 2015 expects to have 11 LNG receiving terminals.

4. China will spend $294 billion on renewable energy development by 2015

As a part of the China’s efforts to counter climate change, the government plans to develop more than 35 gigawatts of solar power capacity by 2015.

5. Every year China builds the equivalent of the UK electrical grid

The UK electrical grid, with almost 100GW installed, is by no means small. The fact that China is building this much electrical infrastructure year-on-year shows the enormous economic growth the country is experiencing and the sheer scale of its energy infrastructure projects.

Truly incredible.

Here is something else that is interesting:

China could meet its energy needs by wind alone by 2030 | Harvard Gazette

A team of environmental scientists from Harvard and Tsinghua University has demonstrated the enormous potential for wind-generated electricity in China.

Using extensive meteorological data and incorporating the Chinese government’s energy-bidding and financial restrictions for delivering wind power, the researchers estimate that wind alone has the potential to meet the country’s electricity demands projected for 2030.

Scientists from Harvard and Tsinghua University said that China has enough potential wind power to meet our ENTIRE energy consumption by 2030!

And that's just wind power alone!

Not to forget we also have the largest "Shale gas" reserves in the world, enough to last thousands of years just by itself. It may not be an impossible dream to think we might actually return to becoming an energy exporter in the future!

This is a responsible decision for China, and investiture in renewable resources is the best. Very impressive stats.

Well wishes to our partners in China.

Is China importing LNG or simply shipping it from one area to another by sea?
You could just pipe it.

. . .
Okay...I thought it odd if you were shipping it around.
You could build a national pipeline.

For china , the same project will cost too much.

We have different situation , USA is flat and most of US people live in town .

But China's geology is not as good as US, we have too much mountain and people do not concentrate in few big cities like US

Not really, in the US, most people live in small towns or countryside. countryside People come to city centers to work, and drive out of city after work.

Yes , I know . But country side people do not use LNG too much .

We have 1.4 billion people around the whole country , almost impossible to cover all people with pipe gas supply.

Think about our electricity line. It is much easier to built e net ,but our state grid does not cover all living area until now

Obviously natural gas is not availlable in every nook and cranny in the US but it is pretty common.

from:
What percentage of homes in the U.S. use natural gas? - FAQ - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

What percentage of homes in the U.S. use natural gas?
In 2009, about 61% of all U.S. households (residential sector) used natural gas.

And keep in mind some people have gas lines available and simply choose not to use it.
Some of my neighbors don't use it even though there's a gas line right down the middle of the road.

Yes , USA's infrastructure is good.

You guys like to use LNG to make BBQ right ?

But your kitchen like to use electricity to cook according to my experience in US.

electricity cooker with indoor exhaust.
