Well I searched in vain trying to figure out which outsells the other (gas or electric) and couldn't find anything.

Most outdoor BBQ grills use Propane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that comes in refillable tanks. You have to go to some store to get them filled. You can't fill it yourself.

Inside people have stoves that use either electric or are connected to a natural gas main that goes down your street and if you have an overhead vent it exhausts to the outside. Some rural area may use other types of gas (like propane but its relatively rare).
