40,000 Indians to be allowed to work in Europe: Report

London, Mar 2 (PTI) At least 40,000 Indians may be allowed to work in Europe, including 12,000 in Britain alone, under a secret trade plan between the European Union and New Delhi, a media report said, citing leaked documents. The EU has proposed that 40,000 Indian workers will be admitted to Europe without any labour market test as part of the plan to boost export trade with New Delhi, the 'Daily Mail' reported, quoting a leaked copy of the EU/India Free Trade Agreement, which is due to be signed later this year. Central to the agreement is the EU's offer on what is known as "Mode 4", which will allow Indian companies to bring temporary workers into the EU, the newspaper said. According to the leaked papers, out of 40,000 Indians who would be allowed to work in Europe, Britain has been asked to take 12,000, which is 30 per cent of the total allocation, despite the UK making up 12 per cent of the EU's population. The 12,000 Indian migrants, who would be able to live and work in Britain for six months, will be in addition to people given visas under Britain's supposedly strict immigration cap, the newspaper said. A large number of beneficiaries will be IT workers who already arrive in Britain from India in large numbers, the report added. According to EU officials, in return for opening up the jobs market, countries such as Britain will be helped to land lucrative export deals. The negotiations on the India deal -- which was first initiated by Former EU Trade Commissioner Lord Mandelson in 2007 and subsequently have been led by Business Department -- was going on in the shadows for years, the daily said. Really hats of to Indian government. But I feel it is time Indians go back to India. The opportunities are much better in India then in Europe

Well there are already millions of Indians living in Europe (UK alone accommodates 1.5 million Indians) so what if 0.04 million Indians are also allowed to temporarily live and work in Europe. Its not like they are allowing 40,000 workers to come and work in European companies. They are merely allowing them to work in the Indian companies who would probably be investing billions of pounds/euro's in Europe and importing their own employees from India. European economy is already under turmoil due to recession and slow growth rate so they need investment to safeguard their own economy. Imagine if half percent of 12,000 new employees n UK, run away from their jobs after their contract expires with the Indian company... it will still not make any difficulty for the government as there are larger number of asylum seekers in the UK every year.

On top of that 40,000 Indian workers would be paying direct taxes to European countries and the the companies who would have invested billions of pounds also be paying taxes to EU countries. The employees are bound to go back after their contract expires so for whatever period they had stayed in Europe, they did not took anything from the state funds and only paid taxes to the government, earned money from the Indian companies and gone back to their homeland. Its a win-win situation for both the employees and the European countries. This would also help Indian companies to expand their business in Europe and earn money in Euro's instead of rupees

If i am not missing out some important detail,probably India is providing a concession to Europeans as according to General Agreement in Trades and Services,a country is obliged to provide allowance to a foreign worker,if he/she is providing services to that country.

i am not saying indians will seek asylum. i am saying if half percent of that 12,000 decides not to leave the country... uk receives greater number of asylun applications in uk so they r not worried much about them

TBH it is not really anything to do with Pakistan or paranoia, the world is bigger than India and Pakistan so every piece of favorable news about India can't be looked at through the prism of Pakistan. This news is because of India's economic might not Pakistan's weakness.


it's not a case of either or when dealing with India and Pakistan.
