ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is going to enter the realm of ship-building as the country is likely to initiate the indigenous production of fast-moving platform for carrying missiles and heavy weaponry in collaboration with China, said Managing Director Karachi Shipyard Admiral Rao Iftikhar on Thursday.

Apprising the Special Committee of the Public Accounts Committee, he said the first fast attack craft was being constructed in China while another one would be built in Pakistan that would take two years. Rao Iftikhar said under the contract signed between the two countries, another two such craft would be constructed later.

The Karachi Shipyard MD told the committee that the shipyard has earned a profit of Rs 400 million. Rao Iftikhar said Pakistan had also signed a 20-year agreement with China for up-gradation of installations of naval forces

The article mentions fast attack crafts and not frigates. F-22p is a frigate last i checked.

Islamabad—Pakistan is going to enter in the realm of shipbuilding as the country is likely to initiate the indigenous production of fast-moving platform for carrying missiles and heavy weaponry, in collaboration with Peoples Republic of China, said Managing Director Karachi Shipyard Admiral Rao Iftikhar on Thursday.

Briefing the Special Committee of Public Accounts Committee, the Managing Director said first fast attack craft is being constructed in China while another one would be built in Pakistan that would take two-year time, and for this purpose Karachi Shipyard company has given RS200 million. Rao Iftikhar said

under the contract signed between the two states, another two such crafts would be constructed later. “It would be a healthy addition in the naval fleet. The frigate p 22 would help the Pakistan’s naval forces to face the upcoming challenges during war times,” he said.

He told the committee that due to efficient policies and economic management the Karachi Shipyard has earned a profit worth Rs 400 million. He said Pakistan has also signed a 20-year agreement with Saudi Arabia for building shipyards: one in Jeddah and other in Dammam.—Agencies

Pakistan needs more F-22Ps, not Type 054A

Kuala Lumpur, KLS: Pakistan¡¯s Navy is looking at expanding its F22P frigate fleet, either construct the exactly same F22P or improved variant of F22P.

Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan, Admiral Noman Bashir told KLS that because of geographical factor, Pakistan needs more ships to cover the vast area.

¡°We need to expand F22P, whether we do exactly the same as F22P or we make some upgrade, make it even better. Because of the technology is changing every year, in order to keep it up to date, you have to keep upgrading what you have.¡±

Pakistan ordered four F22P frigates from China in 2005, the first three ships will be built in China while the last in Pakistan. The first F22P was delivered to Pakistan in mid 2009.

Apart from that, there are reports saying that procuring Chinese Type 054A Frigate is part of Pakistan Navy¡¯s expansion program. Type 054A is a 4000+ ton missile frigate, installed with vertical launch missile launchers and advanced radar and fire control systems.

F22P frigate is an improved version of Chinese Type 053H3 frigate, its full load displacement is 3000+ton but without any vertical launch system.

¡°Type 054A is a bigger ship than F22P, but we may not acquire 054, but we need to upgrade F22P, to become closer to 054,¡± Admiral Noman Bashir said.

He commented that Type 054A is a very successful ship for PLA Navy.

He said F22P can be modified to become closer to Type 054A, but not exactly like that. Pakistan Navy is discussing with Chinese counterparts about its future frigate upgrading program.

He added for the time being, Pakistan Navy is engaging with F22P program, only once they have finished it then goes to second.

He not ruled out the possibility of naming the next generation frigate as F23P

simple, because PN doesn't need one!
welll.....in other words u can say f-22p is a destroyer, thats because destroyer's job is to protect other ships from being attacked by air, subs, and ships.
and if u look at f-22p specs it has all three capabilities (limited though)

all we need is couple of ships fitted with medium range SAM.
next batch of f-22p will be upgraded closer to type 54a, navy chief said.
so in other words we might see hq-16 on it.
and btw f-22p is a very darn good frigate, it has all the capabilities and with the addition of HQ-16 it will be strong as a horse!

F22P shares the following equipment already with Type 054A
- 76mm main gun
- 2x 30mm gatling ciws mount (though some differences in control)
- 2x triple lightweight ASW-torpedo tubes YU-7
- 2x4 AShM C803
- 1x ASW helicopter (Type 054A uses Z9C or Ka28, F22P Z9C only)

So, upgraded would likely be in the area of sensors (radar, sonar) and/or SAM (traditional HQ7 versus VL HQ16 or other systems e.g. 'RAM-like' FL3000 'RAM' since HQ16 may be a bit large for the F22P hull).

How does it relate the two, i mean FACs are smaller and much cheaper than a full frigate.

So whats the news, like are we getting more ships or what?


And about Admiral of the Navy, he said Pakistan Navy is looking at 4000 ton class ships. I don't know if F-22p can be made that heavy, so why not try the Type 54A?

because current platform suits PN's operational needs very well, and upgradation will enhance PN's capability for future needs!

I think the F22P platform will give us a good footholding into the frigate industry , modernize our fleet with ships that will surely last 30-40 years.

And Type 085 can be aquired as well by 2015 because our ships do need that enhanced defensive umberella from air threats

For me the ship has to have updated weapons and modern control and command and operations

But 8 F22P frigates will be healthy addition to our counter pirate initiatives along the border of Somalia Oman etc

Also it will allows us to better track any smugglers doing their bad stuff...

Now if we get 8 Mcinery frigates + 8 F22p I think then I can say thank to our allies we can call ourselves a decent navy

Not GREAT but satisfactory force and capable


The Chinese frigates will give us the ships we lack but the US ships will offer defence against submarine threats to our national interest

But step in right direction ...

8 Mcinery Frigates
4-5 old existing frigates

Should be a decent force in region

Now if we can also get some subs that would be enough for our defencive needs
