Yes the new COAS will serve for another three years with effect from the date he assumes new appointment.
A senior general officer may serve under a junior General (if not promoted) but it is customary that superseded Lt Generals prefer to hang their boots.

As answered, the superseded officer usually retires. In India, while there have been cases earlier of the senior-most Gen. not being made CoAS, it is now the norm that the senior-most is the chosen one. Pakistan does not follow that which actually allows lobbying to take place and is undesirable. A year into the term of the present Indian CoAS and we know who his successor is going to be. I believe following the concept of seniority would actually reduce tensions between the military & the civilian government in Pakistan because any Gen. so appointed will be deemed to have got his place through the natural order of things rather than being seen as a favourite of the PM and which brings pressure on the CoAS to show that he is his own man.

Heads of universities should be at least PhD scientists if not with some achievements. University is not an army unit.
This is one of many reasons Pakistan is rolling some where behind the modern world. Not the appropriate person is doing its job.

CoAS is Chief of the Army staff, so obviously will only be from the army. CAS (Chief of the Air staff), CNS (Chief of the Naval staff) would be its equivalent.. CJCS (Chairman, Joint Chiefs of staff) should be another matter, probably reflective of the importance of the Army in Pakistan.

There is Rumour that Lt. Gen. Nasser Janjua might take over as RECTOR NUST UNIVERSITY after his retirement from the Pak Army. If so, it will be great to see an excellent administrator take over this Fine Engineering University of Pakistan.

The previous Rector did a fabulous Job as an Academic and served NUST for two terms ( 8 years ).

As a humble alumni of this fine university, I want to see a qualified PhD take charge of NUST. Generals shouldn't be running universities. The current rector did a fine job and I had the honor to meet him a few times. But the truth is that NUST could have achieved much more if a competent professor (there is no shortage in NUST) had been in charge.

Faujis brought discipline to the university, which was good. But at department level, quite a few departments lacked the vision to transform from just an academic institution to a proper research institution.
