4 Chinese nationals arrested in Arunachal.
ITANAGAR/GUWAHATI: Four Chinese nationals, including a woman, were arrested by police at a village in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Police on Sunday said the four foreigners were arrested for entering Indian territory without valid documents. Upper Siang district shares its border - the porous McMahon line - with Tibet in the north.
Police said the Chinese nationals were arrested on Saturday from Pango, a remote village accessible only through a three day-long walk from Jorging, one of the Indian villages located close to the McMahon line in the district. The Brahmaputra, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in China, enters Indian territory through Jorging village after traveling about 70km from the great 'U' bend in Chinese territory.
Based on leads from locals, Tuting police station officer-in-charge Gegong Jijong, along with two constables, went to Jorging and arrested the Chinese violators - a 23-year-old girl and three youths. The arrested persons were brought to the police station late in the evening. Their names are not known as yet.
The legislator of Tuting-Yingkiong, Alo Libang, said the foreigners were believed to have walked for days to reach the Indian village. Although nothing is known as yet about the motive of their visit, a joint team of IB, police, Army, SSB and ITBP would interrogate them, Libang said.
This is not the first time Chinese nationals have been arrested in Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing intermittently claims as its territory. In May last year, a 28-year-old Chinese person named Guan Liang was arrested by police in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. Liang had also entered Indian territory without valid documents.
Liang was arrested in Digaru area of the state after locals, suspecting him to be a spy, alerted police when he was heading for Sadiya in Assam. However, on interrogation, Liang had said that he'd entered India seeking asylum. The Chinese national claimed he hailed from China's Henan province; he had fled from his hometown on February 16 last year and had crossed into Kibithu town of Anjaw district in April last year.
A report on the Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve by the Rhino Foundation for Nature in NE India (RFNNEI) said Tibetan poachers from across the border frequently sneak into Dibang valley of Arunachal Pradesh to hunt Himalayan black bear and musk deer among other wildlife.
