Lets recall the news came in 4th November, 2014 (Dawn )
"Only 10 per cent of the defence budget goes to the navy, making even the day-to-day operations, maintenance and repairs a challenge"

Source: Navy gets only 10pc of defence budget

Now here is $4.5 billion , Which Pakistan NAVY knows very well.

News came in from Pakistan Today : Reported by -Mian Abrar

Pakistan Navy Vice Admiral Syed Arifullah Hussaini said during CPEC briefing : “Pakistan currently has only nine merchant ships. Due to shortage of ships, we pay $4.5 billion each year to foreign ships. We can save a significant amount of money if we get more merchandise ships,”

Lets Discuss A Merchant Navy is good for Pakistan or not.? Why not Pakistan Navy design these ships according to its own specs for war and merchant operations. Navy officers can complete there basic hours in these ships and also enhance experience.
plus a design which make it possible portable Equipment and Weapons to be install in a Day when Needed.

A plug and Play feature. So we can only buy weapons or manufacture for these ships.

Considering Merchant Navy does not mean to neglect the Regular Combat Capability.it means giving plus factor.

And on the other hand Guns can be installed permanently which will help in case of Pirates.

The Fact is after CPEC this $4.5 billion will change in to really a good shape.

Syed Arifullah Hussaini also said since Pakistan now had a deep sea port at Gwadar so there was a need for building new shipyards at Gwadar and Port Qasim.

o Yes actually our PM have pain in his fingers thats why He can not sign the file already on his desk for approval since 3 months for Gwadar Shipyard

Pakistan to build new shipyard at Gwadar | IHS Jane's 360

and plus point is Gov is planing since 2014
Govt plans shipyards at Gwadar, Port Qasim - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

Army already running successful business under FAUJI and Askari brand. Now why not Navy

lets share your views about Merchant Navy possibility for Pakistan.
Today The News reported this

The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) is the only Public Sector Enterprise showing profit since around 2002. Despite that, PNSC lifts only a trifling percentage of national cargo. It is noteworthy to mention that bulk of Pakistan’s sea based cargo is transported via foreign carriers draining about US $ 3.5 billion annually. The corporation accordingly needs to be injected with a fresh lease of life. The government must consider setting up at least one to two shipyards at Gwadar as part of infrastructure under CPEC. New ships to lift national cargo could be constructed in local yards with Chinese assistance. The Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) is the only shipyard and oldest heavy engineering establishment in Pakistan catering for shipbuilding, ship repair and general heavy engineering. - See more at: CPEC: Invigorating the national maritime sector | Pakistan | thenews.com.pk

Till late 70s merchant marine biz was booming in Pakistan and PNSC alone used to own more than 70 merchant ships then we had small companies like Pan Islamic and few others plus another giant like gokul owned by an Iranian but based in Pakistan under different flags as ship owners, I feel pain when I see the current conditions of these company especially company like pan Islamic which vanished from the face of the earth, I think it's about time now to rejuvenated Nate them as they also serve as your second line of defence.

Pakistan's merchant fleet and organization was well respected around the world. We were having a sizable size of maritime register. But then like all things, in 1980s it too went the way of Railways, PIA, Steel mills, thanks to Bhutto and his suckers from jahil Sindhi party called PPPP.
pia was in its hayday's in the 80's and in the 60's karachi was a a good destination to travel to

My dad joined PNSC around 1982 as a cadet, when it still was a good company to work for. He always used to say that Pakistani merchant mariners were in demand all over the world, the gulf nations would pay extra if their crew member was a Pakistani and Muslim. But he switched to KOTC because he saw the downfall of PNSC like any other state organization.

We were making quite a few ships every year in our ship yard, and now you can see where the things are.

The problem with Bhutto was the jahil dehati awam that he made his team from. They came in to loot and plunder only. Imagine an idiot like Zulfiqar Mirza was once an employee of PIA.

Hi bro couldn't agree with you more .. my dad also served in PNSC and PN my chacha / late uncle my dads older brother also served for several years as PNSC director its sad how things went down hill for our merchant navy which had once carried our name very hi in the worlds sea. Anyhow maybe my dad knows your dad or family ? msg me and let me know hope you and the family are well .

If Pakistan finishes Power shortage in the country , Pakistan can add 7 Billion $ annually to its budget which are being lost due to Electricity shortage , 7 billion $ is almost our Defence budget . If we generate that money in the future some of it should be given to the navy annually for modernization , as the CPEC is being constructed i am hoping we will have less shortage of Electricity in the country InshALLAH .

I heard most of the problems arise in the failure to pay electricity bills? True?

The PNS amongst other firms was done in by the greed and stupidity of Bhutto. He inducted a lot of people into services where there was no need for them and the services became nonviable. Also PNSCs inability to keep its costs competitive and deliver things on schedule gave the m a bad name. In the process we lost not only ships but hte whole ship building companies which used to do a decent job. This happens when nations go about without any purpose. Pakistan lost its bearings and that Idiot Bhutto destroyed whatever little we had due to his rampant corruption.

He was mainly responsible for division of the country.
He was the only idiot who devalued the currency nearly 150% in one go so that a 20 000 car was priced at 50000.
He nationalized all the industries and destroyed our industrial setup of the time.
His people's policy resulted in mass induction into industries which became nonviable and shut down.
To name a few of his mistakes. I remain steadfast that he was an idiot and single handedly destroyed pakistan to remain in power. His spawn have continueds to play havoc with the country since then. AND he did fill his pockets with both hands and some more. How else can his scum afford to live in Cannes and God knows where else.

Bhutto did the damage in 1970s while he was the PM......he basically laid the foundations. It takes time for things like corruption to dig in and have their effects. Just like it took a good 10-20 years for the religious nut jobs produced under Zia's regime to bear fruit.

What do you say?

pappy,

It is like a festering wound---that if you don't take care---will turn into a gangrene wound---or it is like cancer---takes time to spread---and when there is no resistance---takes over the body and kills it.

Well if we pay 4.6 billion annually to rent services from ships we can manufacture our own merchant ships for Gwadar and save 4.6 Billion

This can result in future budget increase for Navy with saving of 4.6 Billion dollars

Ship such as this is being sold in market for 1 Million to 7 Million dollars (Used)
To spend 4,600,000.000 USD per year and not buy merchant ships like one below

:o::astagh:
PAC18-01.jpg

Compare the number

4,600,000,000 USD (Transport charges) vs
###7,000,000 USD (USED !!! Buy) Real price on Internet Used ships

Why? even build from scratch buy Used quickly 7 Million per ship only % of 4.6 Billion

1 Billion can buy you 146 Merchant ships !!! Used
Realistically 400 Million gets you 57 Merchant Ships in used market

Get these Services at Pakistani Ports : Give contract to Shipping yard for Improvements/Overhaul etc create jobs in engineering , mechanical engineers etc

  • You are saving 4.0 Billion in 1 Year

When you save 4.6 Billion per year next year give to shipping yard to make

> Type 54 frigates
> F22p
> Missile Boats
> Coast guard ships
> Marine division

Okay, so Pakistan spends 4.6 billion dollars every year getting shipping services. We could instead use this 4.6 Billion Dollars to buy cargo ships. And that will make fuel and other expenses magically disappear ? Fuel is the major cost (~70%) in shipping, followed by capital/depreciation and salaries/maintenance (in no particular order).

So how exactly does this idea of investing large amount of cash into the shipping industry which is going through very rough times, through someone as incompetent and corrupt as a government (and of Pakistan at that) on behalf of the taxpayers do any good to anyone ?

Also, since these ships are cheap, fuel is cheap and interest rates globally are extremely low plus shipping industry already not doing so well (low demand=low prices), how are the service charges high ?

In short, Pakistan cannot save anything significant by investing in the shipping industry. There are better investments.

This navy guy is talking complete nonsense to gain awami sympathy or what ever. Maybe he's jealous of the army and how within just a year it has become so popular.

And I'm looking at peoples' nonsensical replies here on this forum, the way they support such an idea, let alone their support of a socialistic concept of state ownership of businesses (what bhutto did, remember ?).....That's a really bad trend.
