Well, there were many strategic reasons for this, one was only the USSR military machine was able to deliver North Vietnam what it needed to win the war!

The price it paid for was the relationship with Beijing. Historically Vietnam always wants to maintain a good relationship with China, even in difficult times. As far as I know, Vietnam wanted to avoid a war with China in the 1970's at any cost, thus the Vietnamese government offered Beijing a strategic partnership agreement, which Beijing rejected.
