JayAtl's threads have some substance. This one is silly I admit. But I dont see any China bashing here. Superkaif is unnecessarily getting excited and you are fanning him.

Sorry IndoCarib for getting over excited. Of course you guys would never resort to anything like that. How many times have i seen put on here bashing by Indians and not commented. Had to this time coz its getting monotonous.

Putting a thread about an illness which I believe this to be and assosiate it just with one country is a bit rich in my opinion.

Why bring China up when they are about 60th? Let me see the colour of the flag that started the flag...... I thought so.

If the number of 287.000 is correct, then they are almost on par with Japan (Japan 25 China 22 give or take 1).
That makes China a top 10 country.

I think the number of suicides has to do with:
1. Pressure to succeed
2. Keeping face/living with shame (huge problem in those countries)
3. Financial/social hardship

But non sensical bashing is stupid brother. Thats probably why the poor lads now banned. I think he may have got carried away. Anyway China does not have ANY issues with suicide stats thats for sure!

East Asian nations in general, tend to have a relatively low crime rate, combined with a relatively high suicide rate.

Hong Kong and Singapore are both Chinese-majority advanced economies, and you can see they both have a higher suicide rate compared to the mainland. Though thankfully not as high as Japan or South Korea.

lol I am sure topic starter did not know that India is at no 41 while china is at no 66 while Pakistani suicide bombers are at no 90

Dude next time do some research before postings

In case you didnt notice bashing is not unilateral ! Chinese are not angels either !

lol I just noticed someone else tried to post the same topic on the China subforum and it got deleted.

. . .

Hahaha that data is from 1999.

The updated numbers (for 2008) are given here: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/usa/2010-09/28/content_11359568.htm

But thanks to a significant decline in rural women's suicide rates during the last 20 years, China's national suicide rate declined from 17 per 100,000 people in 1987 to 6.6 per 100,000 in 2008, well below that year's global rate of 14.5 per 100,000, according to Jing's research.

No one will remember you when you kill yourself as a weak coward. World keeps spinning.

The most tragic are the East European countries. High crime, high suicide.

I think the title of this thread is misleading. You cant put the number of suicides up without looking at the population. Considering the huge population i reckon its a low figure. No big deal nor is it stats to raise an eyebrow.

But it seems non-Indian posters do not extent the same luxury to India. They would rather put out the numbers than the percentage.

.
no South Koreans managed to outdo them.

I think most of them are students who are under great pressure to succeed and get into good colleges. Those who cannot are looked down by everyone including their parents which force them to take their own lives rather than live in shame. The same pattern can be seen in India. As India is becoming more and more capitalistic, the competition to succeed in life is also increasing and those who cannot take the pressure are taking their own lives.

The updated numbers (for 2008) are given here: Suicide climbs among elderly

Hahaha..:lol: if it is only 6.6 per 100000 then for 1.3 billion population, shouldn't the number of deaths be 85,800 per year. But according to the report we're all discussing here, the number is substantially higher. Its actually 21.8 deaths per 100000. Its official statistics mind you. I am not making this up. So obviously Jing's research got it wrong.

From the report,

About 287,000 people commit suicide each year in China, accounting for 3.6 percent of the country's annual deaths, according to official statistics.

About two million Chinese citizens attempt suicide each year, a figure which has increased by 60 percent over the past 50 years, according to the CDC.

That's close to 154 per 100000 people attempting suicide. Good thing that only 1 in 8 actually succeed.
