ISLAMABAD: Twenty-two years after his death in a mysterious plane crash, late Pakistan strongman Zia-ul-Haq faces his presidency being blotted out from history books when a constitutional amendment package is passed by lawmakers this week.

Under the bill to be tabled in parliament, Zia will be stripped of his title of president as his election through a referendum in December 1984 will be deleted from the constitution, the News reported.

After the package is passed, Zia-ul-Haq will be known only as a general and not as the president, the report said.

After holding the referendum one year before the general election of 1985, Zia-ul-Haq had got himself declared as the president.

A great step, what a monster.

You know because of him Pakistan went through very tough and difficult times. We could proudly say before that no one in Pakistan slept hungry or out in the open, we were a secular country with no barbaric laws that he introduced.

Died like a dog. Good riddance.

You think that Zia was a barbaric dog but let me remind you that without him Pakistan would have much worse than it is today because he made Pakistan Army one of the best armies in the world with sheer intelligence in collaberation with General Akhtar. He used the American dollars to make ISI and the Army into world class forces. The mess you are talking about never existed before 9/11 so ask those who are alive and not those who are dead already. Zia was a patriotic leader and a great planner so in my view he is a Shaheed. Furthermore, he was the first Muslim Head of State to recite Bismillah and brought a maulana to recite verses from the Holy Quran at the UN General Assembly Session in 1987 and was admired by all the Muslim Ummah just like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Zia was about as vile and nasty as they come...

I would prefer if parliament tabled a resolution preventing his name from being uttered at all. In Harry Potteresque fashion, perhaps we need to refer to him as "he who shall not be named".

.
what????? :what:

What will happen if they strip the President title? nothing........ Poor guy resting in Peace........ let him rest in peace...... why digging his Grave again n again.

He was known as the President of Pakistan at his time.......... thats a fact......... history can't be changed...... he was the President he will be called a President. However they might say "He was known to be the President but later after the ammendment they stripped the title after his name".

Our government can't do anything good so they are digging old peoples and keeping our public busy. Who knows if after 25 years people say "strip the title from Musharraf also"......... he ruled our country as a president what changes will his title bring now?

I don't think he deserves any peace. He was a deathly cancer that afflicted us...

And as for what will happen, the nation will be setting the record straight for all times to come. Zia ul Haq was a usurper, murderer and all-round villain who does not deserve any titles or honorary forms of address. He deserves nothing but condemnation for singlehandedly advancing the cause of extremism and intolerance in the country.

Gen. Zia had his flaws but he also had good qualities. May Allah bless him.

This is Pakistan's political game, another reason which may prevent the 18th amendment from passing.

When we draft contracts, it is ensured that some clauses are added which are absolutely unacceptable to the other party so that their focus is divided and then we can trade off those clauses.

Nawaz Sharif is liked in Punjab because his supporters see him as a continuation of late Gen. Zia. I don't see NS signing the 18th with this clause. End result will be a defeat of the 18th in Parliament. Zardari will keep his powers and blame NS for not supporting the 18th for the sake of a dictator.

OTH, PPPP may trade this clause off for something else.

Lets see the next episode of siyasi dangal

It was General Akhtar who was the military and intelligence mastermind not Zia, Zia was just involved in politics and that is about it. Anyone would have been able to do his job. In the long term he hurt Pakistan and his death was a response to his involvement in Ojhri Camp Blast by the Army generals.

And please learn about the poverty bomb, corruption, AK-47 culture, heroine, extremism and pakistan becoming a breeding ground for extremists.

He left a irreversible mark for which we suffered and if was so clever why couldn't he predict that US would run away after we defeat the Soviets with their money.

Also mark my words, he was killed by Pakistani Army itself and the army are know reversing his satanic deeds.

Long Live Pakistan And May Allah Save Us From Such People.

P.S. Rahimuddin Khan would have an excellent COAS instead of Zia, look how he kept Balochistan clear of Mujahideen and its adverse affects that occurred in NWFP.

interesting article from a pakistani blog about zia's role in black september

Muhammad Aamir Mughal writes:

To all jihadi and sectarian activists (i.e., Ziaists), look at your spiritual and political Godfather General Zia:

"QUOTE"

"The most promising comparison between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Jewish State of Israel came from Gen. Zia ul-Haq. Lacking a political constituency, he skillfully exploited Islam to legitimize and consolidate his military dictatorship. Presenting himself as a simple, pious and devoted Muslim, he institutionalized religious radicalism in Pakistan. In so doing, he found Israel to be his strange ally. Toward the end of 1981, he remarked:

“Pakistan is like Israel, an ideological state. Take out the Judaism from Israel and it will fall like a house of cards. Take Islam out of Pakistan and make it a secular state; it would collapse.” He likewise surprised many observers in March 1986, when he called on the PLO to recognize the Jewish state. As discussed elsewhere, he was actively involved both in the 1970 Black September massacre of the Palestinians in Jordan as well as in Egypt’s re-entry into the Islamic fold more than a decade later. From 1967 to 1970 our Commander of the Faithful Late. General Muhammad Ziaul Haq was in Jordan in Official Militray Capacity and he helped late. King Hussain of Jordan in ‘cleansing’ the so-called Palestinian Insurgents, Zia and Hussain butchered many innocent Palestinians in the name of Operation against Black September {a militant organization of Palestinians}. The intensity of bloodletting by Zia ul Haq and King Hussain was such that one of the founder father of Israel Moshe Dayan said:

“King Hussein (with help from Zia-ul-Haq of the Pakistani army) sent in his Bedouin army on 27 September to clear out the Palestinian bases in Jordan. A massacre of innumerable proportions ensued. Moshe Dayan noted that Hussein "killed more Palestinians in eleven days than Israel could kill in twenty years." Dayan is right in spirit, but it is hardly the case that anyone can match the Sharonism in its brutality.”

"UN-QUOTE"

As per a book: “Charlie Wilson’s War by George Crile during the so-called Afghan Jihad following things did happen;

“He told Zia about his experience the previous year when the Israelis had shown him the vast stores of Soviet weapons they had captured from the PLO in Lebanon. The weapons were perfect for the Mujahideen, he told Zia. If Wilson could convince the CIA to buy them, would Zia have any problems passing them on to the Afghans? Zia, ever the pragmatist, smiled on the proposal, adding, “Just don’t put any Stars of David on the boxes”

In 2005, the outgoing ambassador of Palestine to Pakistan Ahmed Abdul Razzaq stated that late president of Pakistan General Ziaul Haq's bombardment on Palestinians in 1970, was done without taking any permission from Pakistani people, who would never allow this to happen.

I knew you would drag NS into this as per your habit. Well, my question is, why start and stop at Zia? Was he the only dictator that put Pakistan on the path of destruction? What about Iskander Mirza, who left us with Ayub? What about self-proclaimed FM Ayub Khan, who left us with useless CENTO/SEATO, misadventure of Op. Gibraltar, 1965 war, IWT, ZA Bhutto, and Yahya Khan? What about Yahya, who left us with half of Pakistan? and above all, Musharraf, who's left us with the following:

1. The Ex-PM Sharif and Ex-PM Vajpaee were negotiating for the peace in Lahore, and the renegade Musharraf was sending troops (without taking into confidence the Corp Commanders, the Services Chiefs of Air force and Navy, the PM, the Cabinet) and sabotaging those peace talks between India and Pakistan

2. When the PM dismissed him (with full constitutional and legal authority) from his post due to the disobedience and unprofessionalism he showed during Kargil, he reinstated himself unconstitutionally and illegally with the help of the other renegade Corp Commanders and threw the elected PM into the jail and even got him punished in the false accounts by the lower courts

3. He allowed the American troops in his country, and gave them airfields to carry out attacks on the neighboring Islamic country

4. He sold out undisclosed number of Pakistanis (innocent until proven guilty) to the Americans without first trying them in the Pakistani courts of law

5. He instructed his serving General of the political wing of ISI to rig the general elections and brought PML(Q) and so-called Islamic parties into power, and used this illegitimate parliament as a rubber stamp to further his ambitions

6. He, through the help of his illegitimate Parliament (result of rigging) and sold-out/oppressed Judges (result of LFO), adulterated the constitution and introduced clauses in order to achieve full amnesty for his unconstitutional actions and illegal rule

7. He mishandled the Lal Mosque issue, which resulted in the loss of life (both the civilians and the Army personnel) and resulted in a widespread anger against the regime, and the Army

8. He, through his banker PM, Shoukat Aziz sold out the profitable national assets on the rates far below their actual value and not to the highest bidders. Only Pakistan Steel managed to escape and that too because of the intervention of the honorable Chief Justice

9. Under his regime, the nation was deliberately and at institutional level misguided on the economical condition/progress. The government’s coffers were artificially inflated due to the money sent home by the overseas Pakistanis post 9/11 and which had nothing to do with the economical policies of his or his banker PM Shoukat Aziz. His banker PM introduced novel and totally misguiding scales of measuring the economical growth, that were, number of cars running on the roads and the cell phones sold

10. He dismissed the honorable Justices, put them and their family members under house arrests, and tried to destroy the judiciary

11. He patronized a known terrorist lingual organization in Karachi, hired the terrorist elements of this organization to hijack Karachi in order to stop the visit of the CJP and publicly supported their terrorizing actions that included a dozen deaths on May 11

12. He mishandled the Balochistan issue, gave a free hand to the Army and intelligence agencies to abduct anybody anywhere. None of the abductees ever presented into the courts of law or given a chance of legal defense. Sardar Akbar Bugti was extra-judicially murdered and his rival clan was ‘awarded’ the right to rule Sui and Dera Bugti

13. He introduced the black ordinance called NRO to cut a shameful deal with the exiled political leaders, pardoned them for all their corruption even murder charges in return of the extension of his presidency

14. He mischievously tried to bag the credit for freeing up the media which in reality was the result of the selfless struggle and sacrifices largely by the press and to some extent electronic media and lots of pressure from the free-media-obsessed Western countries

None of these imposed dictators deserve to be called Presidents (even ex-Presidents) of Pakistan; all must be tried, disgraced and dishonored.

My friend,

He did everything for the army but nothing for the people of Pakistan. What is the use of an army and their soldiers whose family is dying of hunger,Come on man , he created more issues then anyone ELSE . I think if he would had not been the president of Pakistan then i think Pakistan would be way ahead today and would not have this problem of Taliban.

Yes he did a great thing in UN , to show and get respect for him by reciting holy Quran, but he also was having millions of his own people dying of hunger. Is this what Quran says that on one side u recite Allah name and another side let people die of hungry.

I was taught that the most imp thing in life is being a nice human being, helping people who are in need only then Allah will be happy. Not to do things which will only help me.

When will we really see what we have done to our country.

What we really need to do is to stop and observe the world around us and get our facts rite and not live in the world of dreams. See the world has grown and moved forward while we are still sitting in one place.

Think will the army be effective if their family is not happy. come on mate
