What's new

26 years on, Zia to be stripped of 'prez' title

During the 80s, millions of Pakistanis were not dying of hunger, in fact, we were feeding 4-5 million Afghanis. Zia will not be remembered in good words but not because in his time, Pakistan was facing some kind of a famine or struggling economically.

.
My Friend,

We were definitely not a rich country IN 80's OR DURING HIS RULE who could afford to spend alot fo money on army instead if he had invested the money into civil programs where people would get bare necessities then i think we would be still better off.

I still don't understand why we support people who think of them self and not for the country.

I knew you would drag NS into this as per your habit. Well, my question is, why start and stop at Zia? Was he the only dictator that put Pakistan on the path of destruction? What about Iskander Mirza, who left us with Ayub? What about self-proclaimed FM Ayub Khan, who left us with useless CENTO/SEATO, misadventure of Op. Gibraltar, 1965 war, IWT, ZA Bhutto, and Yahya Khan? What about Yahya, who left us with half of Pakistan? and above all, Musharraf, who's left us with the following:

1. The Ex-PM Sharif and Ex-PM Vajpaee were negotiating for the peace in Lahore, and the renegade Musharraf was sending troops (without taking into confidence the Corp Commanders, the Services Chiefs of Air force and Navy, the PM, the Cabinet) and sabotaging those peace talks between India and Pakistan

2. When the PM dismissed him (with full constitutional and legal authority) from his post due to the disobedience and unprofessionalism he showed during Kargil, he reinstated himself unconstitutionally and illegally with the help of the other renegade Corp Commanders and threw the elected PM into the jail and even got him punished in the false accounts by the lower courts

3. He allowed the American troops in his country, and gave them airfields to carry out attacks on the neighboring Islamic country

4. He sold out undisclosed number of Pakistanis (innocent until proven guilty) to the Americans without first trying them in the Pakistani courts of law

5. He instructed his serving General of the political wing of ISI to rig the general elections and brought PML(Q) and so-called Islamic parties into power, and used this illegitimate parliament as a rubber stamp to further his ambitions

6. He, through the help of his illegitimate Parliament (result of rigging) and sold-out/oppressed Judges (result of LFO), adulterated the constitution and introduced clauses in order to achieve full amnesty for his unconstitutional actions and illegal rule

7. He mishandled the Lal Mosque issue, which resulted in the loss of life (both the civilians and the Army personnel) and resulted in a widespread anger against the regime, and the Army

8. He, through his banker PM, Shoukat Aziz sold out the profitable national assets on the rates far below their actual value and not to the highest bidders. Only Pakistan Steel managed to escape and that too because of the intervention of the honorable Chief Justice

9. Under his regime, the nation was deliberately and at institutional level misguided on the economical condition/progress. The government’s coffers were artificially inflated due to the money sent home by the overseas Pakistanis post 9/11 and which had nothing to do with the economical policies of his or his banker PM Shoukat Aziz. His banker PM introduced novel and totally misguiding scales of measuring the economical growth, that were, number of cars running on the roads and the cell phones sold

10. He dismissed the honorable Justices, put them and their family members under house arrests, and tried to destroy the judiciary

11. He patronized a known terrorist lingual organization in Karachi, hired the terrorist elements of this organization to hijack Karachi in order to stop the visit of the CJP and publicly supported their terrorizing actions that included a dozen deaths on May 11

12. He mishandled the Balochistan issue, gave a free hand to the Army and intelligence agencies to abduct anybody anywhere. None of the abductees ever presented into the courts of law or given a chance of legal defense. Sardar Akbar Bugti was extra-judicially murdered and his rival clan was ‘awarded’ the right to rule Sui and Dera Bugti

13. He introduced the black ordinance called NRO to cut a shameful deal with the exiled political leaders, pardoned them for all their corruption even murder charges in return of the extension of his presidency

14. He mischievously tried to bag the credit for freeing up the media which in reality was the result of the selfless struggle and sacrifices largely by the press and to some extent electronic media and lots of pressure from the free-media-obsessed Western countries

None of these imposed dictators deserve to be called Presidents (even ex-Presidents) of Pakistan; all must be tried, disgraced and dishonored.

very well written brother, beautiful, i wish others thought like you too.

.
Ok, he will not be called President any more but then how does the nation describe him and what does it matter ? Does anything change ?

CMLA, Chief of Army Staff, Usurper , what ? I mean who ran the country during his regime ?

BTW what purpose will this serve , a lesson to those who follow ? Will this apply to Mush as well ?

.
When he was in power, no one had the GUTS to do any thing against him. Now, since he is long gone, people are coming up with stuff, Sale hypocrites .
The fact of the matter is that every Dictator is ("censored" ) and if you are to talk, then talk about the fundamentals, talk about who gave him right to rule a country and talk about his eligibility as a ruler. Since a dictator surely fails at above mentioned points, there is no need to discuss his policies, no matter how good or bad they were.

.
what????? :what:

What will happen if they strip the President title? nothing........ Poor guy resting in Peace........ let him rest in peace...... why digging his Grave again n again.

He was known as the President of Pakistan at his time.......... thats a fact......... history can't be changed...... he was the President he will be called a President. However they might say "He was known to be the President but later after the ammendment they stripped the title after his name".

Our government can't do anything good so they are digging old peoples and keeping our public busy. Who knows if after 25 years people say "strip the title from Musharraf also"......... he ruled our country as a president what changes will his title bring now?

:) Nothing will happen. You can not re-write the history simple as that. This step will only give some solace to Bhutto family nothing else.

bad steps were taken in his tenure by him thats a fact as much a fact as much the idiotic ego of Bhutto cost us East Pakistan.

This is amusing story of familycracy where bunch of thugs brings in some amendment according to their agenda and pass it in parliament for their interests. Then the next govt of thugs reverse it. This is called demo(n)cracy.

On the other hand dictators issue excutive orders for their own interests and the coming dictators repeat the same with different colors.

In both the systems its dictatorship. 1. is Civilian Dictatorship and 2. Is military dictatorship.

.
I abhor Zia ul Haq and always refer to him the bigot Zia in my posts. Nevertheless I am against trying to change history. Zia ul Haq was president of Pakistan for more than a decade. This is a fact. Not one of the law makers who are trying to do this would have dared even breathing aloud in his presence.

We have to accept the facts no matter how bitter. Else we are no better than Ostriches.

.
I think while Mr Zia did not do the right thing by applying the marshal law, he can't be a president as there were not elections under the 1973 constitution

As for Mr Zia's own achivement - its a different issue with Russian war in Afghanistan he had no choice ... we can't judge that

We can only hope that our nation can get proper democracy and peace that it deserves

.
Zia is the biggest contributor to introducing terrorism, extremism, mass flooding of afghan refugees destroying our provinces and cities..I mean just think list me things we got from us in return for fighting a proxy war? Yes all dictators contributed negatively Zia is unique all the ***** and evil that Pakistan is bearing is all due to Zia agree or not..

. .
ZIA's Legacy:

1) killing bhutto (making him an immortal hero which shouldn't have been done)
2) promoting gun cluture & drug culture in pakistan
3) Rise of MQM, PML (to counter PPP)

he destroyed pakistan in the long run! too much pwoer for one man is never good!

lesson for Zardari pick the Senior most :D , don't fish and a pro US General can kick you any time, so no name list from west. :D else time will tell.

My god, how pictures tell tales that one cannot describe!
Thanks for the post Gin...

Notice how Musharraf is standing proud and straight as a soldier, whereas Zia is slyly crouching in front of his benefactor in a disgraceful manner...
like some office clerk saying to his boss
"Ji Hazoor, Tabaidaar Jinab"...

This picture ironically reflects one of the main differences between the two men, i disagree with a lot of things Musharraf did but as a person he was more straightforward than Zia and certainly better qualified to be the Army Chief.

Zia's promotion was a result of his tremendous powers of appeasing his superiors and ultimately Bhutto
When he was rewarded with the promotion he introduced the same TC culture in Pakistan Army, the martial law duties ensured that Army was very negatively affected.
Zia was the ultimate in concealing his motives and sugarcoating his brutality. He did do some things for Pakistan but he weakened a lot of founding principles of Pakistan along the way and ultimately this is what he is most associated with.
Zia is one of the worst things that happened to Pakistan.

But the fact remains...he was the president of Pakistan in the past and we cannot change the past, can we?
We can refer to him as a usurper and same goes for Ayub and Musharraf, but what to call the supporters of each and every usurper?
Our history lays bare the fact that many leaders supported these usurpers and still are and will remain honorable democratic leaders.

Certainly when the major political parties of Pakistan remain undemocratic and choose their leaders based on family and not merit, what standard are they setting for democracy to remain on track?

Yes you are right but there is another thing. If you compare Bhutto with NS, Bhutto had a great personality and bowing down in front of him (like Zia is doing) can be natural. on the other hand, NS is no where near Bhutto in terms of Personality.

.
Gen. Zia had his flaws but he also had good qualities. May Allah bless him.

This is Pakistan's political game, another reason which may prevent the 18th amendment from passing.

When we draft contracts, it is ensured that some clauses are added which are absolutely unacceptable to the other party so that their focus is divided and then we can trade off those clauses.

Nawaz Sharif is liked in Punjab because his supporters see him as a continuation of late Gen. Zia. I don't see NS signing the 18th with this clause. End result will be a defeat of the 18th in Parliament. Zardari will keep his powers and blame NS for not supporting the 18th for the sake of a dictator.

OTH, PPPP may trade this clause off for something else.

Lets see the next episode of siyasi dangal

So here is the next episode:

NS stuns everyone at the last minute by pulling out non-issues like the name of NWFP and consultation with CJP

Lets what happens next.
