Huawei ships 10 million P8 Lite handsets globally, sees record-breaking sales in January

The company shipped a cool 12 million smartphones in January 2016，a year-on-year growth of 93%

Huawei announced that it has shipped over 10 million units of the P8 Lite handset, a milestone that they have achieved only 9 months after the handset’s launch in Europe last year. That’s not all, Huawei says that their P8 series smartphones have reached a cumulative 16 million people across the globe, which is indicative of its sales figure and not the number of handsets shipped. Note that shipping a handset does not equal to it being sold.

A quick recap of the Huawei P8 Lite spec sheet: this handset comes with a 5.0-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS LCD display, protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Under the hood lies Huawei’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 620 chipset, which comprises of an octa-core 1.2 GHz Cortex A53 cluster. The chipset is paired with ARM’s Mali-450 GPU in quad-core configuration.

The P8 Lite sports 2 GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage (occupies the second SIM slot), 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and a 2,200 mAh non-removable battery. Android 5.0.2 Lollipop runs the show, albeit a heavily skinned version of it dubbed Emotion 3.1 UI, once again an in-house product from Huawei.

Consumers might not get the whole buzz surrounding the P8 Lite handset; what’s so special about this mid-range handset? Huawei doesn’t see it that way, especially since the P8 Lite is their first handset to achieve better sales in international markets than in China.

One of the most interesting numbers that you can extract from Huawei’s PR is its record-breaking sales in January. The Chinese company shipped a cool 12 million smartphones in January 2016. And get this, year-on-year growth is 93%, i.e. Huawei sold 93% more smartphones last month than it did in January 2015. January also marked the fourth consecutive month in which the company sold over 10 million handsets.

Overall, Huawei had a top-notch year, having shipped 108 million smartphones in 2015. That’s a 44% year-on-year growth, helping the brand retain its position as the world’s third-largest phone maker. It also propelled the company to become the largest Chinese smartphone maker, beating Lenovo and Xiaomi to it, and become the first Chinese smartphone maker to break the 100 million sales milestone as well.

Huawei sets up team for VR products

HUAWEI Technologies, the No. 1 smartphone vendor in China, has formed a research team of more than 400 engineers to work on virtual reality products, which will be available to consumers this month.

Huawei’s first-generation VR products, featuring 360-degree view, low image delay for immersive experience and WeChat messages, are expected to boost sales of its flagship smartphone models like the P9. Huawei expects to sell 140 million smartphones this year.

Huawei has set up a team of “400 to 500” engineers on VR products, compared with 1,000 engineers at HTC and 30 at Xiaomi. Huawei plans to focus on “mobile VR” products as accessories of high-end smartphones.

Huawei will give developers favorable policies, set up a VR fund and make demonstrations at its 400 outlets nationwide to lift VR awareness.

Huawei's global smartphone shipments jump 25 percent in first half

China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL], the world's third-largest smartphone vendor, said first-half global smartphone shipments jumped 25 percent, helped by rapid growth in traditionally high-end markets such as Europe.

Shenzhen-based Huawei, which competes with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS> and Apple Inc , shipped 60.5 million smartphones globally in the first half.

Huawei's consumer business group, which includes its smartphone division, booked global revenue of 77.4 billion yuan($11.6 billion) for the first six months, up 41 percent from last year.

Huawei aims to surpass market leaders Samsung and Apple within five years to become the world's top smartphone vendor.

Industry watchers, however, are less optimistic. They said Huawei is facing stiffer competition from domestic rivals such as Xiaomi Inc [XTC.UL] and Lenovo Group Ltd <0992.HK> as cost-conscious consumers are looking for alternatives with similar features in an increasingly saturated global market.

Huawei's head of consumer business Richard Yu was, however, bullish about the firm's long-term prospects.

"There are only three major smartphone vendors in the world - Apple, Samsung and Huawei. It's consolidating... other vendors will die in the next three to five years," he told a news conference.

Research firm TrendForce last week cut its estimate for Huawei's annual smartphone shipments by 8.5 percent to 119 million units, citing worse-than-expected sales of Huawei's flagship phone.

"The sales of Huawei's flagship P9, which features a dual camera, may fall short of expectations as other Chinese brands release competitive products," said TrendForce analyst Avril Wu.

Huawei held 9 percent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter of this year, a distant third behind Samsung's 24.5 percent and Apple's 15 percent, according to TrendForce.
