Well I do agree with that woman's comment it's a 'shot in the arms' for pro-democracy movement in China because the movement is pretty much dead.

And please do not underestimate Norman Borlaug's work and insult him, because technically, he has been the single person most responsible behind feeding Millions of hungry stomachs in the Subcontinent (through Green Revolution).

Though the Nobel selection committee isn't totally unbiased, one should understand that the decision making hugely depends on the way a candidate is represented . Lot of funding is needed for the representation and promotion of a candidate for the Nobel prize. I personally know researchers in US who have been sidelined because of their nationality as the US government does not prefer to fund non US citizens for Nobel representation.

i dont know a whole lot but, Borlaug did his work mostly with wheat not rice, though because of his works the green revolution took on the challange of rice. china on the other hand started with rice since the 30s(didnt get far due to wars) however after the wars things really got started
