JAIPUR: Amidst massive protests, the district administration and Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) demolished two temples from Walled City area, which were said to be centuries old.

The drive was initiated at 4 am to demolish Rojgareshwar Mahadev and Khasthharan Mahadev temples, obstructing the construction of Metro corridor proposed from Chandpole to Badi Chaupar.

JMRC official informed, "Notices were issued to shift the idols and belongings earlier and we had planned to carry out drive on Wednesday evening. It was later postponed to Thursday as there were chances of violent protests."

Nearly 400 police personal were deployed to keep protestors at bay. However, news of demolishing the temple spread fast and many residents rushed to the spot. A senior police official said, "We have arrested 12 miscreants who were provoking other residents to carry out protests. They were detained in Amer police station till the drive was on."

The official said before the temple structures were razed, idols were safely kept in Tanwar ji Ka Nohra at Natani ji Ka Rasta. Also, assurance to shift these temples in old Aatish Market has been given by the district administration."

According to Jaipur Metro sources, the JMRC will shift 13 temples from the Walled City area falling on the corridor. So far, only 6 priests have agreed, while remaining still has not signed the consent letter.

Following high court orders, Metro has expedited the constructions of stations in the Walled City area in order to remove the barricades by June 30. These temples were also major obstacle in the construction work for Metro.

No wonder Jaipur Metro is touted as the fastest built metro system in India till date. Construction started in 2010-11 - trail run in 2013 and thrown open to public in 2015 - completed in about four years and a quarter and because of speedy land acquisition and project implementation as depicted, there have been no cost over runs.

With an innovative and participative land acquisition mechanism set up for Jaipur Metro, the land acquisition has been very smooth and most expeditious. The Empowered Settlement Committee set up for the purpose worked out mutually agreed rehabilitation package for each and every project affected person.

The Metro uses 1,435 mm (4.708 ft) standard gauge rolling stock supplied by our very own BEML - the procured rolling stock uses regenerative braking system which in turn will lead to 30 percent energy saving.

Jaipur Metro system serves as a model for other metros as well.

Reconstruct temple somewhere else. Had a mosque been destroyed, Our first citizen minorities would have cried a lot and given a certificate of Muslim hater and hitler to Modi (their punching bag).

Well, these places should be avoided as much as they can be but if there is no other alternative, then they should be relocated if they have historical and archaeological value. I have seen lots of mandirs, masjids created just to grab the public land.. Those should be demolished immediately.

Why was the temple not shifted ? why was it demolished ? As per law the temple land belongs to the deity and hence cannot be seized, so I am guessing that the temple was an illegal one.

It is in poor taste to celebrate this as if it is an great achievement. Any moron can destroy a temple and many of them have.

Hope measures are in place for crowding. I mean Delhi Metro was good in the beginning, but then it became jam packed. Huge Queues for security checks, and suffocating inside. India has too many people for her own good.

I too agree, celebration of this is not at all in good taste.. Why people are here are enjoying this? I will wait and see how many illegal colonies which are real mess and creating more troubles are demolished....

As per logic, temple is 200 years old, but an illegal colony is may be 20-30 years old..so which is less ancient and should be demolished? It should be illegal colony...Also why there was no planning done for a horizon of 50-100 years.....Why metro route was not chosen such that it does not causes the temple demolition. Also cant be metro underground? Why it has to be overground at this place?

Exactly i am a frequent user of Delhi metro & its jam packed 24/7

Why no protests? Why no riots? Why no politics? Why no play victim card? Why no blame a particular religion & the groups associated to it?

Similarly mosques in Pak are raised do the construction of roads .. Ppl protested nobody gave a sheeeet...

But a temple being replaced on army/cantonment board in RWP... Indians on PDF and our civil society went ape shit.

People have to realise that Mosques,Temples,Churches (unless they are legally built or don't have historic importance) can and should be taken out for the good of the society at large...

God lives in our hearts.. And not just in temples etc.
